Trails is my absolute favorite series of all time. I love Persona, SMT, and the new Like a Dragon games as well. Baldur's Gate III and Dragon Quest XI are both very good as well, I just haven't played enough of the rest of those series to have a solid grasp on them. Never understood why people see "turn-based" and automatically think "boring" Like some of these same people will whip out the deck of Uno cards at every family gathering. Turn-based is not inherently boring, just like action is not inherently exciting. It's all down to implementation
For people getting into Trails, I personally would recommend starting with Trails in the Sky rather than Trails of Cold Steel. The Trails series is made up of arcs in one world and one grand story. I imagine you could start with the first game in any arc and play through without too much confusion, but each game has a lot of references to and characters from previous games/arcs.
Yep, though its not the worst thing to start with cold steel as long as you go back before playing 3. I'd argue its better to play cold steel 1 & 2 before azure and zero just because azure kinds ruins the impact of a few things in cold steel 1.
Moon 🌙 I need to give Baldur’s Gate 3 another shot. The rest of your picks make a lot of sense to me. I think you’d also appreciate Chained Echoes and especially Sea of Stars. That’s probably my favorite turn-based RPG of the past several years.
If there's any rpg that i would recommend that i didn't see be mentioned, it would 100% be Tactics Ogre: Reborn. One of the greatest trpgs redone in a great way
Great list. The more I think about it, there are a lot of modern RPGs to choose from. One of my favorite games that didn't make the list was Lisa the painful rpg. I played the definitive version that came out last year and it was an incredible experience for me.
Wow man this is so exciting, I was thrilled to watch this video of yours. I don't have a lot of experience on turned based games and it is just so enlightening to hear from someone who you trust. I mean some of the best games that I played recently I have heard praise from your channel and motivated me to play, even now I am giving yet another chance on elden ring and I am just loving it so much. You have great taste man thanks for all the work that you are putting to inform everyone about video games it's the least I can say.
@@TotallyTubularJonathan Baldurs Gate 3 is totally on my bucket list, definitely will try Yakuza like a dragon once I make some time. Next will be pretty busy as Dragon's Dogma 2 is my most anticipated all way back since Elden Rings release and of also rise of the ronin.
A bit surprised to see Southpark and Pokémon, sure they're decent games but IMHO far from top 10 of the last decade. Some games I'd rank over them: Divinity: Original Sin 1,2, Octopath Traveler 2, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Wasteland 3, Chained Echoes, Sea of Stars, Shadowrun: Hong Kong, Expeditions: Rome.
@@TotallyTubularJonathan Divinity OS2 is one of those rare games that pulled me in and had me immersed and lost out of earth for a week making me feel like a kid again once i got into the flow of it
great video idea! i didn’t use to like rpgs but in the last few years i’ve been catching up with the biggest ones and i think i can finally appreciate them for what they are and the persona games are probably up there with my favorite games of all time
Just subscribed and loving your content. Only commenting on this vid coz it was the last one i seen.. i think u should do a vid about decision making games where choices really matter would like to know what ones is your fav.. for ps5 as am a massive playstation fan of course aswell lol but keep up the good content bro .
I wasn't a big fan of turn based RPGs but became a slow convert after like a dragon and now more interested after playing like a dragon infinite wealth. It's my love for the yakuza games that led me to explore this genre
I couldn't put y8 down either. So much content initially thrown at you. Completed Dondoko island before leaving lol. So good, combat is fun. Jobs were improved. 200 hours in game.
A fun fact monolith soft made project x 2 on 3ds that had yakuza characters. Nothing better than seeing Kiryu n majima interacting with other characters from games like resident evil n phonnix wright. N throw in xenoblade n we even got a shenmue n yakuza cross over we always wanted. Highly recommended the game its funny as hell n great fan service.
Not putting Sea of Stars on here is a crime. It’s got the same timed attack and block system as Mario RPG but done way better I think it’s the best turn based RPG ever you should play it
Sea of stars is an average game that got fame because they sold it as a love letter to old games like Crono Trigger. Super Mario RPG is old, don't known why it is on the list.
final fantasy 12 and 16, tales of arise, tales of berseria, persona 5, persona 4,persona 3 (reload and original), star ocean series, kingdom hearts series, pokemon x and y and shield and sword, xenoblade chronicles, harvestella, my time at sandrock, octopath traveler 1 and 2, dragon quest 11 s, dragon quest treasure,
I like some of these rpg turn based ones like Yakuza 7, DQ11, of course SMT Persona. it has to capture my attention with its art and unique story. Im more into action rpg like Tales series, Star Ocean, Ys, where its real time combat.
@@TotallyTubularJonathan oh nice I didnt know you made a video ranking the games by Yoko Taro, can I ask if and where they would rank on a list of your fav jrpgs or modern rpgs?
good list but I really do think LAD 7 is better than 8, gameplay in 8 is better but the story and side quests are much weaker, I love them both but 7 still stands on top for me.
The only two turned base RPGs I have finished is South Park FBH which I loved and sea of stars. P5 and like a dragon are great but I just could not finish them. p5 I made it all the way to the last episode after 100 hrs but I just could not keep going.
I agree with most of this list except Undertale because it isnt really an rpg its a parody of an rpg you have no party members,no real combat its more of warioware minigame then an actual rpg battle system.Bug Fables would have been a better choice because its a better rpg with multiple party members, customizable medal system for a variety of different builds, and an action command system similar to Paper Mario.
I'm pretty sure that Nintendo/Game Freak had put the idea of BOTW on Legends Arceus. Even the graphics are exactly the same style. Too bad I got bored of it, since I prefer something more linear instead of open world
IDK if you count crpgs as rpgs but you used baldurs gate 3 so I assume you will. if you like turned based you need to play the pillars of eternity and pathfinder series best turned based rpgs not even close
Man after playing like 60 hours of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, I wanted to try something different. Bought Yakuza: LaD and I find the combat so easy and boring :( wish I liked it. Played like 5 hours so far and I'm so bored.
Opinions are just that but Legends Arceus was horrible. Throwing bath bombs at bosses to beat them was not a good gameplay choice. I will pass on that game being on any list of good games. TemTem is a far better game in my opinion.
I’m having a hard time getting behind the hype of Persona 5. I played SMT V and absolutely loved it, picked up Nocturne and it was fantastic. But I’m 40 hours into Persona 5 Royal and just barely unlocked the 4th palace. The gameplay loop is brutally slow, about 2-3 hours of actual gameplay in the dungeons followed by 6-8 hours or completely irrelevant dialogue in the school. When you can actually play the game it’s fun, but for the most part you are just answering random high school history questions and reading tens of thousands of throw away lines of dialogue
I usually like your content, but is this list terrible one. It is heavily - and I mean heavily - JRPG biased, and fails to mention some truly brilliant Western turn-based RPGs. Shockingly, there are none of the Divinity Original Sin titles, and both 1 and 2 have won multiple game of the year / RPG of the year trophies, not to mention scoring in the 92-93 range on Metacritic. None of the Shadowrun games are mentioned, and Shadowrun: Dragonfall is an instant classic. No Disco Elysium!! No Wasteland 3! No Banner Saga games. No Underrail. No Expeditions games, and Expeditions: Rome alone is better than half the games you mention on this list. No Solasta. No Age of Decadence. No Darkest Dungeon! No Torment: Tides of Numenara…. And nearly all of these games were very well-received by both gamers and critics. Ugh! What a useless list.
I think the problem is I have not played any games you mention here except disco and that game as amazing as it is wouldnt really make sense on a list like this. Just kind of it’s own beast entirely
@@TotallyTubularJonathan I would then respectfully suggest that you don't call your video the Top 10 BEST MODERN Turn-based RPGs, as it seems like you've hardly played any that aren't JRPGs... and that is really an unfair, skewed point of view as clearly, you prefer JRPGs. And for the record, l love many JRPGs, including quite a few of the ones you mention - but about half your list doesn't deserve to be on it, and more than half of the games I mentioned in my first comment would be worthy replacements.
@@Abobus101 Fair point! It is definitely not an action RPG either though, so if you had to put it somewhere, I would put it here. Bear in mind it works on skill-check die rolls, similar to practically all turn-based RPGs.
