'It all felt like a costume" - definitely resonates with me. I didn't realise it, but I still do get that feeling with a few of my clothes. Good point - and a nice tool to warn that I'm making a bad choice - when something isn't me.

My biggest lesson was determining what are the non-negotiable practical aspects for me when it comes to clothes and always sticking to them. My main thing is comfort: if the material doesn't feel nice against my skin, if the garment is tight anywhere or is just uncomfortable in some way, I won't buy it because I know from experience that I won't wear something that is uncomfortable when I have more comfortable options. Another thing is fabric choice for tops - (pretty much) always only natural fibers because anything synthetic just gets stinky so fast and I know I won't wear it when I have cotton tops available to me xD

Wish I would've learned earlier to buy what fits best vs. what size you think you are! Sizing varies so drastically across brands, it doesn't make sense to let a number influence your self-worth. Recently I've been buying a size up in high-quality thrifted pieces and tailoring down for a fit that both looks and feels good.

Honestly, no wine while shopping on-line. It's like going to the grocery store when you're hungry and I ended up with a myriad of things I really didn't want. Totally wasteful.

Giving myself explicit permission to be and dress as I truly wanted to changed the game and helped me feel more myself than ever. I used to collect pictures of things I loved and was inspired by, but I'd tell myself that it was "too formal/dramatic/fancy... too much" for every day life. Now I've found ways to use that "fantasy" inspiration in reality and I'm also allowing myself to raise the bar of formality if I damn well feel like it ;) Maybe it's inspiration for others.

Finding quality pieces at the thrift is a double win! I have found most of my staple pieces at the thrift at exceptional quality and price. I have actually made a point now to start Thrifting my pieces that just aren’t me instead of reselling so that someone else can find a really great quality piece at an affordable price for themselves. Button downs are my thing! I love them, I wear them all the time, but right now I have to focus on finding Elasticated waist pants to grow with me through pregnancy. I will be pregnant all summer into the early fall months, so I definitely need to find longer trouser style pants with elastic waist‘s. This has been a bit difficult as most of them are cropped. But I’ve decided that this time around shopping, I will not compromise. I have left many thrift stores, completely empty-handed, but still consider at time well spent because I’m learning a lot as I go about myself and about clothing. It’s all been rather fun experience!

I agree with this! Sizing messes with your mind so much and they are never consistent between apparel companies! Buy what fits you best!

I did a lot of retail therapy in my early 20s because I didn't feel good about myself. Wasted a lot of money on shoes and clothes that was for my fantasy version of myself. With that said it took me a long time to figure out my personal style and not just to buy whatever I thought was cute or on sale because I didn't have a cohesive wardrobe. I read the Art of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo in 2016 and that helped me a lot in figuring out what my personal style is! Also your climate, lifestyle is a big factor. I am a mom I like comfort and function and also to be put together. And I want it to be effortless. I am basic but I love my graphic band tees, flannel button downs and jeans and sneakers. I have a few nicer pieces for formal stuff but that's about it. I am in my early 40s and I finally feel good about myself and comfortable in my personal style, which is Normcore if you want to put a label on it. Great video as always! 👍❤️

Oh totally the thing about not wearing the same thing to big events and being seen in the same thing in photos. That even came from my Mum who would get a new outfit made by my Gran for every dance she went to. Much was made of her looking stand out and the perfect wifely aperture to my Dad and that has deeply affected how I see myself, that to look “better” than every other woman is important but obviously that’s very toxic and unachievable, especially now I’m 60! So its taken years for me to stop competing with other women and be happy with me! I still probably haven’t fully managed that yet and still look back on things I’ve worn to events and beat myself up that I could have done better. Still trying to refine my personal style and be happy with something that will take me into the next phase of my life as a grandmother to 4 grandchildren and a good role model for them.

I wish I’d learned that a classy wardrobe doesn’t have to be black, white and beige. I fell into that trap for years until I learned that my skin’s undertone and saturation should be driving the colors I wear. I had so many stark whites and jet blacks and cool oatmeals when I needed warm whites and charcoals and plums. Game changer. “Quiet luxury” colors tend to pull bright and cool, so us muted warm undertones have to dig around a bit to find our version of the look.

I’m not sure as far as style goes, I would have anything to say to my younger self. When I was in my 20’s, 30’s, even my 40’s, I had less money. I was very creative with what I had & spent much less on clothes. I’ve struggled after having more money. I wish I had not spent so much on clothing and put it into savings instead. This is in the last 10 years. So I was much more budget conscious when I was younger. 🤷‍♀️

Thank you Christina❣️ your authenticity and honesty serves us all well, self love being first priority in style. the practice of self respect heals us from past trauma and negative mindsets- this is so key. I can wear the same outfit and on a loving day I feel cozy, chic, and awesome - the same outfit in my negative head space just doesn’t feel the same way because my mindset is off balance. Morning meditation to cultivating love and positivity is part of my everyday. Also tuning into slow fashion videos and your podcast has transformed my my self care routine and sense of style.💕

When I shop, I always remind myself not to shop for my fantasy self, when ever I did, I always felt like I wasn’t me when I wore them, so after wearing them once, I never would reach for it again I also realized I like skirts in the summer and shorts that aren’t bermuda’s I like better quality clothing, but I have beer barrel pockets, so I have learned the art of thrifting, ever since I started to thrift I am so happy with my wardrobe, less is best, but it has to be good quality… I also dont buy any polyester, reading labels before I decide whether I can purchase it

When I was in my twenties I had two small children. I didn’t spend much on myself back then. Now I’m in my 60’s and I’m making up for it now. I love clothes. And I have entirely too much in my closet. But I don’t seem to be able to stop buying. I think I’m trying to make up for not having as much when I was younger. And I don’t buy fabrics I don’t like anymore. I’ve gotten pickier in my old age.

I did the same thing. I am 58. It took 30 years to pay off our mortgage so now I shop too much but I buy alot of good quality preloved clothing. The rail in my cupboard collasped recently so that was the wakeup call to make 2024 a no buy year. I was a typical 80's teen buying terrible fashion. I did cultivate a look of loose pants with my mum's home made vests as tops. I am revisiting that look now in a grown up version and I feel like my true self again. I would tell my younger self not to donate the beautiful clothes my mother made for me because of weight gain. I am losing weight now and the things she made were timeless. I would wear them again now

My biggest style lesson is don’t buy something because it is dirt cheap regardless the brand or style. If it doesn’t fit my style, body or workable with what I have in my closet, it’s waste of money and real estate. Instead, I’d rather pay more for an item I would use and love and last. The 2nd big lesson is not to get obsessed when I fall for a style to buy multiples and in different colors. I find that I have never used all of them no matter how much I like the style. Money and real estate wasted. Now I limit to no more than 3 or less. My purchase folders on phone is really helpful to see what I bought in last 3 years to avoid having too many similar items.
@33Jenesis
@33Jenesis Год назад
I have a 3rd lesson actually. That is to keep weight from fluctuating. My weight goes up when inactive and goes down when I have an active or two (plus eating home cooked meals). It is frustrating to have to shelf clothes I can’t wear and buy new sizes, and then shelf new sizes and recycle old sizes. It is a lot of real estate needed for size 0 to size 10. This time around I am going to try my best to keep my weight and shape by keep on swimming and swing dancing with moderation to not burn out.

My lesson I wish I learned sooner is that you don't need to wash your t-shirts after 1 use, especially when they don't smell. My husband told me numerous times - hey, you don't smell! Your 3rd point hit hard - I think I want to chase a certain look with clothes because I don’t feel 100% confident in my body. But I also don’t exercise. I've got two, and a bit embarassing but: 1) wearing more revealing, tighter clothes won't make you look sexier; 2) the fact that you can squeeze yourself in a S-size piece of clothes doesn't mean it's your size. Try at least 2 sizes and choose the comfortable one

@corinna_maybe

are you comfortable thrifting items that you'd like to try out for fit/vibe? You can just donate them back to a charity shop if you find they're not for you style-wise. I totally understand your problem and I have become more strict with returning items. If I love them in the shop I'll take them home and try them on each day in front of a mirror, making a new outfit, just to be sure I want them and they're cohesive and versatile enough. If I'm happy with them after a week I'll keep them, otherwise I'll return them (in person in a shop to avoid shipping and being wasteful). It might be a good way for you to test what you like while keeping the item in pristine condition? Good luck 🩷
