Welcome to MojoPlays and today we’re fighting for our lives as we try to make it through the 10 hardest PS2 games. For this list, we’ll be looking at games that could give Dark Souls a run for its money long before the series was a twinkle in FromSoft’s code. Our list includes “Twisted Metal: Black” (2001), “Jak II” (2003), “God Hand” (2006), “Manhunt” (2003), “Stuntman” (2002) and more! What was the hardest game you completed back on the PS2? I just went back and replayed Shinobi! I couldn’t beat it as a kid but finally all these years later, got it done. Still can’t beat Chaos legion…..or should I say don’t want to finish.

God Hand deserves so much more love man. It’s such a damn shame that reviewers that are horrible at videogames led to the series’ demise despite the fact that mechanically, the game’s techs in the hands of an adept fighting game player is more complex and involved than about 90% of the games of its genre released nowadays. Even to this day, despite the many difficult combat dependent games I’ve played over the years, God Hand still proves to be one of the hardest I’ve ever played. God Hand 2 could have been such an incredible game to witness.

I played manhunt in my middle school years. I managed to beat it and unlock the cheats. I will never forget how I had to run and find a hiding spot. Pigsy scared the crap out of me on the last level once I heard the chainsaw and pig noises 🐖

Forbidden Siren 1 and 2 are definitely up there. Large maps with vague objectives, enemies that can only be temporarily downed and very limited resources.

Yep. Should've included Siren. I found that game to be ten times harder and more annoying than Elden Ring and I finished both to 100% completion.

@@NekoHazrd I think a good amount of Ps2 and earlier games are harder than games like Dark Souls. People say that they are hard because you die a lot but it doesn't take long to recover your progress and is for the most part easy once you learn patterns and enemy locations. Games from older consoles made you lose much more progress if you failed and because of awkward cameras and controls they could feel unfair at times.

Saying I played Manhunt 2 genuinely feels like a underrated flex in the horror game genre nowadays. Ppl don’t even know what I’m talking about most of the time and their always horrified after I explain to them what it’s about 😂😩

especially on the Wii. good lord it made the game so much harder, especially as somebody who didnt own/play a wii i didnt know the buttons, or how to manipulate the controllers well. it was a hot mess.

I found GTA 3 hard. I spent forever on that mission where you have to cover 8-ball. Later in the game going back to Portland is almost a death sentence with having the mob attacking you sight. This makes it impossible to take care of any unfinished business you have there.

Shinobi was a particularly difficult but awesome game. I finished but not completed it by collecting all of those Shinobi Tokens and getting an S Rank on all levels to unlock that Special Stage. That game drove me nuts with all of that jumping and dashing.

I haven’t played Shinobi but Devil May Cry 3 on DMD mode is the hardest ps2 game I’ve ever played, beating it without items is ridiculously hard

Shinobi is such a deception because the first two levels are pretty straightforward, but once you awaken the sword’s blood lust, the game kicks into another gear entirely

there was a bit of an ingame hack you could use. if you had the ps2 mic you could use it for better sound and distractions. talking shit back to the enemy and actually having to control your own breathing and screams. because if you like, hummed you could only attract the enemys you wanted. without that i dont think id ever beat the game 100% on hard mode.

The original Monster Hunter IS ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL. Its precarious ps2 tank controls + Tedious farming and gathering + Grinding + Monsters designed to test your patience. PLZ PUT THIS ON ANOTHER LIST!!!

Love this game, gets easier though when ya master it, hardcore mode without the map is fun, just gotta have patience and learn the ropes then i find it becomes easier, wish a 3rd game was in the making, doubtful though?

I tried playing Maximo when I was a wee lad and it made me wanna pull my hair out. I don’t remember which one it was but it would only let you save once per level but you had to chose between that and getting health back and some other stuff I can’t remember. I wish I could give it another shot nowadays that I’m a little better at video games 😂

As a gamer who started on nes, ps2 and ps3 were my high school and a bit after years aka never home non stop partyin n chillin ..i missed mad ps2 / ps3 games. Came back around black ops 1 era, smoked mad blunts playin zombies that got me immediately back into gaming where i left off..i left off on san andreas and final fantasy x.

Aaahh Shinobi..... Now that was a video game, where you battle the camera angle and everything in the game is trying to kill you. And if that wasn't enough, your own weapon will try to kill you if you don't feed him enough souls. BEAUTIFUL!!! I recomend it to anyone who says they are a gamer.

Jak 2 was a great game, definitely played harder games. But I remember one of the missions on Hero mode being obscenely difficult, but still managed to get through it to unlock the mega scrap book. There needs to be another Jak and Dax game! Shinobi was also great. I remember having completed that game with all its unlockable characters on each difficulty. I had a blast though some of those levels were insane. It also had great unlocks including a secret unlockable level to get through. Its "sequel", Nightshade is a game I couldn't actually finish because I didn't find it anywhere near as fun as Shinobi. That remains the only game in the Shinobi universe I did not finish,

When I played Jak 2 and saw how hard it was, I almost went insane of frustration. I had to give up on playing it, or I would've been stuck trying to beat it forever. I guess there's a limit on how many game you're able to play.

Seeing Jak 2 on here is surprising, I remember it was hell when I first played it all those years ago but when I replayed it 2 years ago it wasn't as difficult as I remember it being. Unless you're going for 100% completion then it is rage inducing with collecting all the precursor orbs.

The shooting was awful in that game. At the final stages they pretty much wipe you on the floor because they send 10 people after you all shooting at you & the controls would lock on making you unable to properly run away. Sometimes they would even shoot you before you could shoot them. It was unfair.

@@trel4504 yeah, but sometimes the challenge of a game is the mental challenge. even "scary" games really arent that scary any more. were as the manhunt series and resident evil series truly made your heart rate speed up and slow down. whether you want to admit you are scared or not, or even if youre not scared. your body still activates that adrenaline that some people cant handle. i know the game well, i have it on steam. i still get sweaty palms playing it.

Thats why i collect ps2 games. Besides the fact that you can watch dvds on them (or blu rays if you have a gen 1 ps3 that can play both past generations), the PS2 has sooooo many games that i either love or are unaware about. Heck last time i saw godhand it was 180 dollars at a videogame store, i was familiar with it but didnt quite know how special that game was. But thats ok, i got games like Lifeline (the one game you control with a ps2 microphone), all the gta games, compilation discs like metal slug anthology, etc. All i need now is a good CRT and i can try guncon games

Probably the hardest PS2 Game I challenged but still enjoyed was "Shadow of Rome", very long, very exhausting (specially the Bossfights or sneaking levels). Can`t remember restarting and still enjoying any any levels more often than in this game.

I would also add to this list the first Red Faction game for ps2. Although the beginning is nothing to complain about, the second half of the game is absolutely maddening for the difficulty spike. Almost every single enemy can either one shot you, or kill you within a span of 3 seconds with the precision rifle. One other game which I had, and also loved, but at the same time struggled as all hell with. That game was Lord of the rings: The two towers game for ps2. I LOVED that game so much, but dear god the difficulty was insane.

I literally made it to the last level on the hardest difficulty for shinobi and spent 8 plus hours trying to beat the last boss it was truly hell the last go 😭 as if beating him regularly wasn’t enough.

I only played Devil May Cry 1 and thought that was really hard. Easy mode was a challenge for me. If you played that one, how would you compare it to Devil may cry 3?

@@newgameaaaa i've played both the only thing that made dmc1 hard imo was the camera angles and the harder difficultys once u learn the bosses in dmc1 there easy on normal and hard now dante must die u have no room for error 2 or 3 hits from a boss and ur done u can either learn every boss or u can cheese them with items on dmd now dmc3 was the first one I played i'd say almost every boss in the game had moves or abilities that made it hard much harder than dmc1 I've only played thru normal on dmc3 so i can't tell u about the harder diffuculties. also fun fact For those who don't know, the original North American release of Devil May Cry 3 was made more difficult by taking the Japanese version's hard difficulty and making it the normal difficulty

@@newgameaaaa original release of devil may cry 3 actually was really hard. Normal got glitched to What we call Dante must Die mode. It was actually so bad you either had to get an extra disk that was distributed in certain places or get the special edition. Vanilla devil may cry 3 inspired some of the harder difficulties in later devil may cry games with maybe the exception of DMD mode of D.M.C.

I still have manhunt on OG Xbox and still play it. Haven't beat it yet, but damn is it fun. Back when games didn't take themselves seriously. Great game!

connect the Microphone it makes the game hella easier, and well, harder if you mouth breath/scream when you run. but you can have a wider range of vocal feed back. test it on easy/normal mode were you have a sound radar. allows you to draw the attention of some but not all.

It's the bloody last boss of Shinobi that was the problem as it took me about over hour to kill him the first time I got to him in 2003. That was the first and the last time I beat him as when I get to the golden castle I just turn off the game.

Manhunt, the only game that managed to make me cold, tense and scared in a game. His ending is sinister, grotesque and too difficult, when you manage to finish, you have an enormous sense of relief. And it became one of my favorite games on the PS2. And I wanted to see a movie based on this game, since the story is really good.

I got stuck on Shinobi in paticular the WhiteTiger Boss ,God Hand was hard 2 & Gradius 5 that game was incredibly hard like I couldn't pass 2-3 stage oh & I could beat CastleVania Lamment of Innocence

Gitaroo man is sooo easy. There is a trick that one finger push the button while the other two finger keep tapping the other button, while the left of your hand is moving the analog stick... You will hit every note all the time

That was the huge difference between the good old days and nowadays. I had so many games and i played so much as a child on my ps2, but there are still so man games, i have never heared off. It was such a cool moment when i go to the video store with my mom and i can rent a game for the weekend. You havent seen any trailer or streams, you just have to decide because of the cover and the 3 pictures of the background.

as much as we complained back then about gamestop robbing us for games. the trade in system was a lot better than it is now. i would save for one expensive game, play it, and just trade down till i found games i wanted to keep or til i was going through and picking up 2 dollar games from the bargain bin. just rinse repeat for years.
