A couple of you mentioned that finding the 10 most emotionally draining concertos would be difficult, because the medium tends to favor bravura fireworks and happier moods, which of course is true. Still, this was a challenge I simply couldn't refuse, so here's the list:
Berg: Violin Concerto
Walton: Viola Concerto
Busoni: Piano Concerto
Bloch: Concerto symphonique
Poulenc: Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani
Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor
Schnittke: Cello Concerto No. 1
Elgar: Violin Concerto
Martinu: Double Concerto for Two String Orchestras, Piano and Timpani
Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 1
