What’s the difference between a rock guitarist and a jazz guitarist? The rock guitarist plays three chords in front of thousands of people, and the jazz guitarist plays thousands of chords in front of three people.
@ScotPoland-oi5up

Reminds me of something Simon Nicol said at a Fairport gig, introducing Matty Groves. It’s a fairport folk ballad because it has 18 verses and two chords. If it had two verses and 18 chords it would be a Steely Dan song.

But there are Metal and Progressive Rock & Prog Metal guitarists that do that too. And then people complain that Jazz Guitarists play too many atypical notes and don't make sense to them . . . this is why I enjoy all those styles I just mentioned - VARIETY. And especially when they merge. I enjoy angular, atypical, dissonant music, especially when its heavy. If the "noodling" is tasteful to my ears, I don't mind at all, but I like if its going in the "BeBop" direction too, or being melodic or ferocious. Though many guitarists that are championed today like Tim Henson, I just think its too repetitious, and too much _gimmicky_ techniques (though I've come to enjoy Tosin Abasi and a few others in that subgenre). And this coming from an Allan Holdsworth, Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower, Spastic Ink, Blotted Science) fan. And bands like Gentle Giant and the Mid & Later period of King Crimson.

Totally agree with Prince being on the list. But Steve Vai and Hendrix should have been on the list. Vai is / was a technician, not a "musician". Hendrix was the first great innovator...that doesn't mean great musician. Hendrix played for 10-12 years on stage and during that entire time you could count on one hand his "iconic" riffs. Page has DOZENS. Although Hendrix could play a REAL solo...meaning, he could create an intro, theme, variation on that theme, return to theme, and then outro. Zappa was a master at that. Page was a master at that. Vai and Prince are clueless.

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a David Gilmour show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. Hard to explain how awesome that moment was in my life. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen. I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.

He is EXTREMELY melodic, and despite being quite sloppy his phrases are memorable, and always fit into the bigger construction of the song as a whole…. I’m thinking of Since I’ve been loving you, Fool in the Rain, The Ocean, Achilles, Black Dog, Stairway, even Dyer Maker And with Julien Lage, I’ve always heard an exciting guitarist who is on the edge of his improvisational at all times, and is always surprising, humorous and personal with everything he plays… not to mention a great sense of counterpoint and harmony!

I completely understand where Andy is coming from, and agree with a lot here. However, on Gilmour, I would say that I've seen him live in massive venues where he has tons of amplification (and sometimes gain), and his control is awesome. If a measure of technique is controlling your live sound to perfection, then DG has it in spades. No squeaks, bum notes or misplaced bends, he's like the Anti-Page. Whether that makes him overrated or not, is open to debate IMO.

The thing I've always liked about Gilmour is the sense that he's labored over every single note for hours to make a piece sound exactly the way he wants it to sound. Even if I don't happen to particularly like a solo, I always feel like it's the best it could possibly be, according to the demands of David's ear. I feel I'm hearing the authentic mind of the artist. And of course the real brilliance comes when his ear and mine happen to totally agree, such as happens on Echoes, Dark Side, and (to a lesser degree) Wish You Were Here.

You are saying he doesn't actually improvise. One can't possibly labor over every note when improvising. Also, you know that there's substantial evidence to show that the human mind makes decisions b4 we are aware of them? You may have convinced yourself that the note choices Gilmour makes are in line with yours because of a conscious subconscious feedback loop you've created via confirmation bias i.e. you condition your subconscious to believe everything Gilmour plays is in line with what you want to hear, and your subconscious then tells you every note he plays is what you want to hear b4 you are consciously aware of it.

In a sense I agree. However, the point of music is music, not acrobatics. From a purely technical choppy perspective Page is not on the short list of the greats, but he composed, aranged, and recorded brilliant music. Think on Neil Young. He is a very primative player, but intensly musical. Compare Page, Young, or Gilmore with highly technical players like Steve Vai or Joe Satrioni. The later are no doubt technically superior, but they make very little music you would care to listen to, where the former have an amazing body of work. Music or musical effect trumps chops every time.

Normally I can half see the point you’re making, the problem with Andy Latimer (who is a great flute player as well) is that the Camel out put in the 80s was aor rubbish, they lost something when drummer Andy Ward left. Also in the 70s the thing that let them down was their lack of a decent vocalist which didn’t improve until Richard Sinclair joined, that’s why the instrumental snow goose is the best. So for my taste, he doesn't desserve to be any position on that list. How many guitarists can play like he does? Not many, not a single one. So for me the audiences are right to put him on top lists. Each person, each taste anyway. - Andy Summers: He's done very creative guitar parts and sound for the Police musical indentity, not sure Sting could have played what Andy did. He had to hire Dominic Miller to back him on guitars on his solo career. Andy Latimer : Not sure he's ever been quoted that many times on best guitarists ranking over the years. I think you fail to comprehend the point of this video and don't really understand what "overrated" actually means. You never ever hear anyone go into raptures about the guitar playing of Kurt Cobain or The Edge... They might get placed stupidly high on those stupid Top 100 Guitarists lists by Rolling Stone or some other publication that nobody gives two shits about - the same ones that put John Lennon in the Top 5 guitarists of all time 🤣... But when it comes to actual proper discussion about guitar, nobody really rates them. People only ever criticize The Edge and say how overrated he is... how he can't even play and just relies on his digital delay effects. I've never heard anyone actually analyze his playing and say why he is good. David Gilmour, on other hand, is always praised to the skies as one of the rock gods and one of the greatest guitarists ever. I agree 100% with everything Andy said in his critique: Gilmour is great at what he does, nothing wrong with being a super fan of his, but let's put it in perspective before we go elevating him above everyone else who played guitar. Of course, he is overrated.

Couldn’t agree more! Andy mentioned that “zen state” where musicians get connected to that higher impulse, and Allan is one of the only musicians I’ve ever heard that’s always connected to that space. Every live performance, every studio recording, he was always communicating from a higher dimension through the guitar. And I agree with your comment as well, Allan is also my favorite musician of all time. There is this misconception that you have to be a musician to enjoy Allan’s music. I’m barely a musician at all (I mess around with drums and guitar but I barely know any theory and I’m not particularly good at all hahaha), and I consider myself much more of a music enjoyer/listener than a musician. Allan Holdsworth’s music still speaks to me on another level than any other guitarist or musician. It’s a cosmic beauty completely unique to him.

I’ve been playing lead guitar since the dawn of time. On and off periods of having to play copy songs in clubs, one of which was “while My Guitar Gently Weeps”, literally since the White Album came out. The song is iconic, the role of the guitar, and the solo, has gravitas and implication like no other. It’s damn serious stuff. One could even make the case that Clapton didn’t even quite hit the mark, though he certainly gave it his all with a unique solo. I’d never claim I did it any good, but I came to it with a sense of reverence every time, there’s no choice. One hopes each time “the music comes” to you as you would say, every time, the situation demands that of you. Friends have been sending me links to the Prince performance mouths agape for years. At first listen I hated it, and I’ve given it several more chances. Any good player will know it’s not that good for starters, but the huge problem is- he grandstands it. He can’t help himself, he needs the act that encourages adoration, and shows no reverence for the song, George, Eric, the entire place in history the song inhabits. Expressing this will distance people I assure you, but I’ve had this opinion backed up by other musicians I respect, and now yours too. Thanks for providing me some rant space. Kind of missed out a lot of Page's work there with this appraisal, much of which ranks him as a pretty stellar guitarist before Led Zeppelin was even a thing. Following him being spotted playing at the Marquee in the very early Sixties, he was asked by scouts from both Columbia Records and Decca Records to do session work. This simply doesn't happen to shit, sloppy players. He ended up as one of the most in-demand session players in London in the early to mid Sixties - playing on a ton of records, including stuff by The Kinks, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Them, and he's on some outright mainstream classics including Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger and Petula Clark's Downtown. Then he was in the Yardbirds for two years following that. If this was all he'd ever done, it alone would be enough to put him in a lot of top ten lists, but then of course he started the New Yardbirds, which became Led Zeppelin. And none of this even touches on his production and engineering skills. It's true that like many rock stars of that era, drugs and booze led to some sloppy gigs, and he has been known for occasionally being 'inspired by' some other tunes from time to time. But whilst this is a bit of a black mark on his story, there can be no doubt that he is one of the most influential guitarists of all time. The idea that he is overrated, is frankly, laughable.

If you get into criticising musicians who obviously had addiction problems at certain times, that started to affect performance, I think it's getting silly and unfair, these are personal criticisms and not objective ones.
@ChockHolocaust
@ChockHolocaust Месяц назад
@@jimmycampbell78 Yup. I saw Zeppelin at Knebworth in 1979 (which was their second to last ever gig prior to Bonham's demise) and they were truly excellent at that one, so whilst it is known that Page was on occasion not in great shape at gigs, that wasn't my own personal experience. But even if it had been, I'd still have rated him by his overall oeuvre. He is after all, the guy whose riff was the tune for Top of the Pops for years, and the guy whose perhaps most famous acoustic riff, was one which every guitarist used to learn. That one even prompted me to buy a ridiculously overpriced Harmony Sovereign out of curiosity, since it was the model he used to play that infamous acoustic melody. And I'm sure like many, my first electric guitar was a Columbus copy of a Gibson Les Paul, largely because Jimmy Page played them. It's worth noting here too, that when people refer to Jimmy's playing as sloppy, some of that is in the technique anyway. Anyone who plays guitar will tell you that; when you first learn, it is a good idea to aim for precision in fretting to ensure a good sound and engender good habits, but once you get okay, you are then in a position to 'know what you can get away with' in terms of accuracy and still sound okay. A classic example of that is popping your thumb over the top of the third fret to fret the G on the sixth whilst using the edge of your thumb to mute the open fifth, then using your first finger to fret the first string at the third fret, aka the 'sloppy cheat version of an open G' chord as opposed to the 'proper' one. This is a classic Page way to do a G and technically it is 'sloppy', but it has a unique sound compared to a 'proper' open G; you can hear this on Rain Song, where it becomes part of the way that tune sounds. I've seen plenty of bands and artists who on occasion have done crap gigs, and sometimes that was down to drugs and booze. Not least of whom was Johnny Thunders, I must have seen him play at least 20 times, since he frequently gigged in my home town. Now there was a guy where you never knew which version of him you were gonna see show up for a gig, although he did at least always turn up. I experienced everything from chatting to him amiably outside the venue then seeing him knock it out of the park, to watching him throwing up behind the speaker cabs on stage, owing to his heroin addiction, then having to keep restarting songs after losing it mid way through. But in spite of all that, he remains one of my favourite guitarists. Technically he wasn't a massively complex or skilled player, but he was quite inventive and nonetheless hugely influential for a lot of guitarists, not only in the way he played, but also in the way he looked, dressed and his attitude. Compared to some other players who came after Page and Thunders (and many others too, Keith Richards for example), you could certainly rate other players as technically superior to them. So yes, if this is one's criteria where you put them at the top of a list, then you are over-rating them. But in relation to this and pioneering stuff, I like to recall the joke from the mockumentary Bad News, where Vim Fuego says: 'I could play Stairway to Heaven when I was 12; Jimmy Page didn't actually write it until he was 22. I think that says quite a lot.'

That was a bit harsh on Gilmore. The dividing line on who makes this list and who doesn’t, in my opinion, is how much value you give to a guitarist’s ability to write and sense of melody. If you don’t put much value in those attributes, a guy like Gilmore or Page can conceivably make an overrated list like Andy’s, but if you value those attributes as much as technical ability, they do not make this list, but rather guys like Satriani, Vai, Malmstein etc… do. Another interesting aspect of this video is Andy considers the blues to be passé or unsophisticated, it seems. In some respects that is true, but blues-based music and guitar is so much more interesting to me than something that has strayed far from, if not totally abandoned the blues.

I agree with the point you make, but I disagree with you lumping Joe Satriani in with Vai and Malmsteen as "guys with technical ability" but no sense of melody or composition. He is bursting with melodies and songs (with his guitar doing the singing). I think it's what separates him from almost every other rock guitar instrumentalist. Fair enough, if many people still find that "boring"... But I think he gets unfairly dismissed by ignorant critics who describe his body of work as mindless guitar shredding, lacking composition, feel, emotion, melody, etc.... He was infamous for kick-starting that fad back in the 80's, but there was always way more to his musical vocabulary than that. Next time you are driving somewhere, find any of Satriani's albums on Spotify...Maybe pick one of his later albums with none of his early "hits". Give it a chance... Jimmy Page is sloppy. There's just no other way to put it. He was a visionary with lots of rock/blues chops and a great producer/studio guy. He cut his teeth playing studio engagements around London day and night on all kinds of early/mid 60s British rock records, and in a very real sense, there was no one else around at that time who knew how to get that feel and sound. He was young, and raw, visceral and genuine. And you can hear it on all those records. And he got good. Then the Yardbirds happened and put Jeff Beck, Page (who started out playing bass with the band. Beck said he hated playing with Page on the bass because he didn't know how to be part of the rhythm section and was just busy all the time), and Clapton on the radar. When the Yardbirds broke up and Page formed the New Yardbirds which he then transformed into Led Zep, he developed a sound that no one had heard before. We wouldn't call it heavy metal today, but it was then. And it's hard to think of a band that rocked like Led Zep did. They set a new standard. Frankly, I think that had a lot to do with Bonham, and Robert Plant's amazing vocals. Page was creative, inventive - even if he did lift from every blues riff and player - and had a great sound. But I've seen him play. As I said, he's sloppy. And he really doesn't have a particularly large musical vocabulary. I've seen Any Summers play live twice. I'm sorry, but he's really not all that good. He was the right sound and look for the Police at the time, but that's about it. Sting is a fuckin' genius. Musically and intellectually. His guitarist Dominic Miller is a sublime, cerebral player, someone Summers couldn't hold a candle to. Page and Keith and Gilmour?!?!?! Andy, have you gone spare?!?! 😂Yes, Page could be sloppy live, isn't technically the best, but he created color and textures better than anyone. From Zep 2 onwards, almost every song had a different rhythm tone and a different lead tone, so many colors . Most guitarists, Blackmore, Schenker, Eddie VH, Brian May, DiMeola, Trower, even Holdsworth to a degree, have the same tone on every song on every LP. Page has so much color, a different lead tone of every song. Achilles Last Stand, a fast rocking song but the guitar solo is very slow, no fast runs at all, any other guitarist would shred on such a song. As for Keith Richards on the list. Please tell me who sounded like the beginning riff of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" before Keith did it in 1971? Or the Brown Sugar riff. After Keith did those riffs no one was allowed to play like that again cos everyone would say they are ripping off The Stones. Those riffs can only ever be Keith, that is why he is great. I grew up with Holdsworth, DiMeola, Larry Coryell, Bill Connors, John Etheridge (listen to Softs!), Ollie Halsall, etc., but none of them could come close to the solos in Comfortably Numb, or Stairway to Heaven, etc.. It isn't about speed or perfection, it's about emotion, melody, and ultimately songs.😘

Love it! But Julian Lage is a crazy pick haha… he actually stands out from most other modern jazz guitarists as having a very unique voice. The great Gary Burton picked him to be in his band just like he did with Rosenwinkel and Metheny. I love Holdsworth and the fusion guys too, but you can’t fault guys for not having that “edge”, because they’re coming from a different lineage of jazz players. Lage and Rosenwinkel are respected for a reason, it’s not like they’re overhyped because they’re in Queen or Pink Floyd or something. Holdsworth was not a jazz musician but he was a true fusion player, and there’s nothing wrong with studying bebop and playing in acoustic jazz trios…I don’t think Lage is overrated in that respect (at least not in the same way Prince is, for example, where the general public overhypes someone).

Mostly correct. Except Gilmour, of course - not your fault, you’re a drummer, and only listen to bass guitar in the band. And where was Clapton - if only for the comedy responses? Andy Latimer will give some people the hump. I thought Allan Holdsworth was the biggest critic of Allan Holdsworth. Trouble with claiming Sting took most of what the Police had and left to solo it, is that Sting’s solo stuff was nowhere near as good as the Police. IMO. And not sure if you mentioned you played with Robert Plant?

I mostly agree on this list, with a few exceptions. Andy Latimer: it's true that he (like his band Camel) doesn't have the dark chaotic side that Hackett, Howe, Fripp and Hammill do have, so in that sense he's less complete. But in my ears prog is broader that that (or "deeper" might be the better word), and the feeling that he can generate with bending just a few notes is for me almost unequaled in prog. Like

You said he and others are a mix of many guys all mixed together, to which I would "who isn't?" Lage however, compared to pretty much anyone is very different. Tell us one person who is comparable. No patented Helix modeler tones, no gain ( distortion), no delay. He plays with just a pedal or 2 though a Fender Deluxe style amp and really sounds and plays like no one else on the scene today. I think you should put in parentheses that this list mostly deals with the technical aspect of playing. For the most part, i agree with you with regards to Internet guitar players, but there's always the exception that proves the rule. I've been playing for 30+ years. Well, in The spirit of transparency, I'd say 30 years but with five or six years total in breaks speckled in between. I know it's a mark of my age, but most of my favorite guitar players and solos are the same ones that I've had 25 years ago. The only new entry to that list in more than a decade is Chris Buck, of whom i was unaware of before finding his RU-vid channel. He's actually had caused me to make purposeful changes to my playing, the major one being to bend notes less, and slide up and down to them more. Hell, I've been repairing guitars and building and working on amps for 20. Throughout that whole time i never quite got the attraction to P90s. Though i would never tell them this, any time someone brought in a Custom shop 56 Les Paul or PRS with P90s into the shop, I'd immediately think "what a waste of a great guitar." I saw them as being akin to gluing a bumper sticker to a Bentley. It was only after listening to Buck playing with P90a that i finally understood the attraction. I picked up a used Reverend Dirtbike Royale. Stupid name, but a great guitar. When i started shopping around i had already come to the conclusion that whether the guitar came with them, I'd be using noiseless pickups. The P90 hum is crazy and my familiarity with P90s is limited to the degree that unlike single coils, the difference between noiseless and traditional wouldn't be something i really noticed. Furthermore i personally think Mojotone Quiet Coils were the best sounding noiseless Fender style single coils. I picked up the Reverend for a little over $700, and they came stock with QC P90s. I love them. You're number one is ridiculous. And the argument that "you only like it because you don't know any better," is a losing argument. You're basically telling people not to believe their lying ears. I agree completely with your estimation of Roger Waters though.

The way you described what music does was very eloquent. Even in those stretches of the day when I'm not listening to music, I still have a song in my head practically the whole time. In fact, when I listen to him, it's on the 'Igginbottom record. Soft Machine is my favorite band. Specifically the Wyatt era. He's my favorite drummer. Literally every virtuoso guitarist will work with other guitarists to get ideas. That's a silly objection. I also find it really weird to just put "internet guitarists" as a number on the list because that isn't a person, and neither is "People who don't rate Allan Holdsworth" I'm sure there are both great and bad guitarists that don't care for Allan Holdsworth and doesn't really have anything to do with their playing.

I think The Police changed their direction as a band from 1980 on - it began on the third album and continued on "Ghost in the Machine". They became less of a new wave power trio and more of a top twenty pop band, frankly a bit more formulaic, and no doubt there was a good deal of business pressure involved in it. The label and the management focused more and more on Sting and pushed for his sound to dominate on the albums.
