The 10 oldest keyboards I've ever reviewed

You don't hear sounds like these anymore! These distinctive tones were created using completely different sets of components to what we see today. Bit rates were lower, "intelligence" was far simpler.
There is a certain lost charm here, and I'm sure anyone who watches this video will feel a tiny bit nostalgic, even if you weren't there back in the day.

Those keyboards are a bit dirty, best way to get rid of dirt and dust on sliders and other areas is to use sticky tac.

I kinda like the dirt, it feels like Mad Max keyboard playing ;)

David Martin 0 seconds ago @3:00 I remember borrowing a Casiotone 7000 for a few weeks back in the 80's. It had some pretty fun arranger/style and song recording features . I knocked out a pretty jammin rendition of Neil Diamond's Hello Again using it. Yeah I just admitted that!

Nice collection of a bunch of old soldiers. I'm glad you could document them and the sample sounds. Like an old soldier, theses keyboards rarely die, but just fade away.

They certainly have a tendency to last. I genuinely meant it when I said that some of the sounds just aren't available anymore, it's a genuine shame in some cases.

Factoid, Johnny Cash (or his band) were very dedicated to those 80s-90s technics keyboards.

Where I started on the Casio CT-7000. I graduated to an Ensoniq ESQ-1 after that. I miss that Ensoniq.....

@@gearfacts Well, a lot of arguing with my wife about buying it. Incredible piano patch. I played it through a Roland JC-120. The early JC-120's had Stereo Line inputs, a feature they did away with. My piano teacher stopped by my home, couldn't believe the great sound I got out of it. Miss that JC-120 too, another regret. Anyway great hearing these old boards! Thanks!

Have you ever thought about showcasing and comparing the different sound chips used in Casio's keyboard? Like A^2, ZPI, AHL, HL, AiR, and AiX?
@gearfacts
@gearfacts Год назад
Hmm that would be an interesting video. They're all quite different when you think about it

So much goodness here! I don’t exactly know why, but vintage personal keyboards like these often excite me more than modern gear.
@gearfacts
@gearfacts Год назад
I know! I think it's because they are calling out to us, as musicians, to be as innovative as we can. These boards are so limited that you just have to help them along with the sheer muscle of your creative drive.

Great selection. I was secretly hoping that you were going to roll out a Casino MT-210; my first stereo keyboard.

Don't think I've ever had that one. Glad you enjoyed the video, though :)

The control panel on many early 80s home keyboards largely consisisted of sliders and mechanical radio style selector buttons.Then by the late 80s and early 90s soft touch membrane buttons became the norm. But the Rhymic 10 which was marketed as a kid's Toy is still better than today's generic keyboards although I think it might be an early Medeli as it looks similar to a Yamaha PSS-470 and I think all it's internal components were made by Yamaha. As many of the early 80s keyboards are analog you can still play them like a synthesize. The analog drums do still sound like drums even if they are a bit crude sounding, it's a shame many older home keyboards don't have a way of manually playing each drum sound on the keyboard but then they were marketed as arranger keyboards with the assumption that nobody would want to do keyboard drumming although by the 90s that feature pretty much came as standard on most keyboards but the late 80s saw the introduction of drum pads on keyboards with that being the selling point of some keyboards especially with keyboards like the Casio MT-520. The transpose dial on the silver Yamaha keyboard also doubles as a sort of pitch bend wheel!

Rather useless video but sooo cool! The JVC rocks IMHO. The delay/reverb trick is just brilliant.
