The 10 Worst Cy Young Robberies of the 21st Century

The Cy Young award is the highest honor doled out to a pitcher in Major League Baseball. These are the top 10 times during the 21st Century where I felt someone other than the winner was robbed.

Santana’s ‘03-‘08 stretch has a case for the most underrated 5-year run by a pitcher in the last 30 years: 98-42 with a 2.85 ERA, a 156 ERA+, averaged 226 strikeouts a year, won 2 Cy Youngs and finished top 7 every other year. Basically it’s between him, ‘96-‘01 Kevin Brown and ‘97-‘02 Curt Schilling.

I definitely agree about 2012 and 2016 (as the video says) but I didnt mention 2018. Snell definitely was lacking in innings and Verlander crushed in in K's (though Snell still had well over 200), but his ERA was 63 points better, 53 points better in ERA+, won 5 more games, WAR 0.8 wins better, I don't think the voters got that one wrong

@homerunproductions162

Before I watch this: The CYA took a decided wrong turn in 2010, when the time honored tradition of measuring success was primarily by W-L records. Sabathia or Price was robbed, the two deGrom CYAs should have gone to Scherzer and Strasburg. The last three 20 game winners have all been snubbed. Baseball writers are doing a disservice to their profession and history.
@homerunproductions162
@homerunproductions162 25 дней назад
That's a hot take, most baseball people think the hyper focus on W/L pre-2010 was the real travesty and I would agree. Why should lesser pitchers with better offenses get rewarded over better pitchers with bad run support? After all the award is for best pitcher, why should run support have anything to do with it?
@BongoShaftsbury1
@BongoShaftsbury1 25 дней назад
It’s true, most baseball people (front office, coaches, agents if it works to their clients advantage), do agree W-L records are not as reliable a predictor of future success as ERA and Command Ratio. It’s also true that every starting pitcher worth his salt, with the possible exception of deGrom, believes Wins are the most important thing. They take the mound in the 1st either tied or ahead, their mission is to maintain that lead or tie, and get as many outs as possible. Win the game, celebrate afterwards with your actual teammates, not theoretical average replacement players. Baseball writers aren’t scouts. We don’t need them parsing abstract stats after the fact, trying to determine who the “best” pitcher was, the CYA should go to the most successful pitcher. Did you know that in 2018, the Mets were double digit wins over 500 in the games deGrom DIDN’T start, and four under in the ones he did? In 2010, Felix Hernandez gave up 17 unearned runs. Few if any reached base on an error, then scored on another error. Burnes had a great ERA, but pitched 18 fewer innings, and had 9 fewer wins than Urias, whose ERA was also under 3.00.
@BongoShaftsbury1
@BongoShaftsbury1 25 дней назад
OK. I rewatched this and here’s the flaw in either your underlying premise or mine. We both agree IPs, AKA outs, are the context in which other starting pitchers’ stats are placed. You believe ERA is the most important thing, because starting pitchers can’t control what their teammates do or fail to do. Randy Johnson’s 14 losses and deGrom’s paltry 10 wins are sanctified by their glistening ERAs. You also give them bonus points for strikeouts which have already been counted as outs. Their added value or lack thereof will be reflected in runs allowed or IPs. You believe WAR is a valid stat. I believe ERA is a secondary stat, actually tertiary, as it absolves pitchers of their unearned runs allowed (Errors are closer to hits than outs). I believe in the mission, which is to get at least 15 outs, by hook or by crook and allow fewer or the same number of runs as your team has scored. I believe pitchers who win games BECAUSE they get support from their teammates are the greatest thing. At least on this Memorial Day weekend, you and I will always have Ranger Suarez.
@homerunproductions162
@homerunproductions162 22 дня назад
Ok, you make an interesting point, and wins do imply a good performance and super important these days - a DEEP performance where you control the outcome of the game. But you can also track that by looking at how many innings theyre putting in which I put a lot of importance on. I think pitcher WAR is just one stat to consider, I don't put much weight into it. For me it's all about preventing runs from scoring so judging a pitcher is way easier than a hitter where OPS is probably the best one but there's a good argument for WRC+ and other stats to get the full picture...but for pitchers it's all about preventing runs from scoring and the other pieces will fall into place. Maybe they should have an ERA and RA for people who think "earned" runs are overrated
@BongoShaftsbury1
@BongoShaftsbury1 22 дня назад
@@homerunproductions162 , and for me, it’s all about preventing the tying or go-ahead run from scoring, and getting at minimum, 15 outs. Games are self-contained events, where only wins, losses, and no-decisions are possible.
