Don't think they had a choice. But burying your emotions is much easier when there are no real consequences. It's a simulation it's not real so that helps. But remember they didn't immediately pass it, it took them some months I believe. Echo of course is able to pass it easily since she's literally a trained spy and chameleon and her way of life is very similar to Bardo. Putting your nation before yourself. They are hardened and experienced warriors that have been through and survived much worse than this. Unfortunately, Hope is inexperienced compared to the others and couldn't pull her weight. But I'm sure Echo has a plan.

Strangely, enough I think Bellamy dying didn't hit Octavia that hard. After all, she spent 10 years on a different planet with no way of getting back (that she could think of at the time), where time moves faster. She had to mentally say goodbye to him while she was there and practically think of him as dead and gone since she was most likely to never see him again. So she already grieved so to speak. So I guess she was more or less able to recover faster with him dying since she already came to peace with the idea of never seeing him again. Sorry for the ramble, I hope that made sense.

You have to remember Echo is a trained spy and chameleon. She knows how to adapt to situations much more adeptly than the others. I'm sure she has a plan.
