The difference with churches and spirituality groups is the lengths they will go to to obfuscate criticism. 12-Step groups can be quite cult-like, with threats of insanity or death if you leave.
Yes very cult like that has a professional following beyond members, steps, threats, and shunning. There are big hospital detoxes that have dozens of choices for "treatment" BUT of course ALL consist of AA programming and then there is court sentencing, either AA meetings or an AA facility.

It strongly recommended that men sponsor men and women sponsor women. Not sure what kind of meeting you were going to. Not saying bad stuff doesn't happen. I have heard that serial killers have found victims at meetings to .there's bad players in all sorts of organizations.
