This story was inspired by a real Arab Muslim that was an ambassador to the Volga Bulgars from the Abbasid Caliphate...named Ahmad ibn Fadlan. It is not so much his actual story that inspired this, though...it was just the fact that an Arab Muslim really did travel with a group of Vikings.

this movie has so many awesomely quotable lines. "You saw the Wyrm?!" "It's calvary. Hundreds of them; with torches." *"Heh, I'd prefer a dragon". *"I 'don't sound like that" *'They take the heads, they always take the heads." *"They're demons" *"When you die can I give that to my daughter?" *"The perfect advisor" *"Warrior says the wind. Chieftan says the rain. But why seek you me? Met you your match? Met you your match, in the eaters of the dead." *"Go on make it worse, now its going to rain." *"Is there a cave!?" Just real gems.

One of the things I like most about this film is how it isn't the main character that defeated the two main foes, it's rare to let someone else's do the big deeds and even so far as giving his life once his task was done, the main character was just the story teller swept up in the saga and that makes this film work so well for me

He didn't learn their language overnight. It took them months to get where they were going. They stopped at night and gathered round the fire for meals, which is when he listened, watched, and learned their language. It took months, not just one night.

This film was based on a book by Michael Crichton called Eaters of the Dead. Crichton based the book on the historical account of Ahmad ibn Fadlan who spent time with Norse and Slavic tribes. Crichton also took inspiration from the Anglo-Saxon epic poem: Beowulf. It's interesting that you would bring up Theoden because Tolkein was a Beowulf scholar and based Theoden and Rohan on Beowulf and Anglo-Saxon England.

Well, baths back in those times were communal. People took baths with 10-30 people at a time. Taking baths in the same water as a sick person would tend have you catch what they had, so they weren't exactly wrong.

The meat of it was that he wasn't praying to survive, or praying for victory, or praying for revenge. He was praying that, in the upcoming fracas, he would do the right thing by his comrades, those he was defending, and his faith.

The story is based on a Micheal Crichton novel that is inspired by Beowulf the old English epic poem. The Wendel being a a reflection of the monster Grendel in the poem. Then Beowulf slays his evil mother in a cave under a lake. The story then ends with a battle with a dragon. Buliwyf the “king” of their group being inferred to be the inspiration of the story we know. He also talks to Ahmad about being remembered in stories. Thus the end of the movie gives us the implication that Ahmad will write down this tale and immortalize his friend just like he had hoped. This is one of my very favorite movies that almost no one has seen or remembers if they do. lol I’m glad you seemed to enjoy it so much.

he also took inspiration from the tales of ahmad ibn fadlan. An arab traveller from the 10th century who wrote down his different trips and the people he meets. And just to be fair... I don't know if scene'crly will read this but in the books, he learns the language in a very long time but it was not very well represented in the film despite their attempt. A great movie overall, a very rare instance where I find the book and the movie to be equally good.

When he learns the language, some people have described their cultural immersion, a moment while they are surrounded by a language, when their internal monologs will click over to their host language. For some people, it takes days, others months. Some people never experience it, but I experienced learning the Castelleon Spanish language this way. One day I woke up, and was speaking that language. When I returned home, in my mind I was speaking English, but my family claimed I was speaking fluent Spanish for two weeks. 😮

What we see as differences -- these things are soooooo inconsequential. People are People - we are not different. When good people come together, differences disappear. BTW, Ahmed Ibn Fadlan was a real person who did indeed travel to the see the Northmen in the 10th century and we have a journal of his experiences - although this particular story in the movie is obviously fictionalized.

There are a lot of wisdom in this movie about how we should carry our lives without fear and enjoying every second of it. Your comment about the king is great! He indeed was a king that served those who needed him and courageously did his duties. No wonder he readily volunteered to be the first warrior. A true humble and honorable man!

Michael Crichton wrote the book on a dare. Parting from the premise that every legend is based on real events, that a the core of each legend there is a grain of truth, he was asked by a colleague what "real event" could have been behind _Beowulf._ So he came up with this, _The Eaters of the Dead._ But in the book the Wendol are a relict population of Neanderthals or some other archaic human species. I kind of wish the movie had kept this aspect instead of just some savage humans. I love how Crichton incorporated the Ahmad ibn Fadlan's actual account of meeting the Volga Vikings.

The thing with Eban knowing their language so soon is obviously one of the weakest points of the movie :) He could not know it so soon, maybe if they traveled for many months. But at the same time we know he is a poet and diplomat from a multicultural place (one of Arabic kingdoms) so probably he already knew many languages (esp Persian as the language of literature I guess), so its understandable that his ability to learn another lang was much better than average person. Still Omar Sharif's charachter knows Latin and Greek and the viking which befriends them knows Latin too. That a viking knows both Latin and Greek is IMO impossible, esp that Latin was abandoned for like 4 - 5 centuries in most places the vikings can be seen at 10th, if we exclude the christian monasteries of course, but the only thing vikings can be looking for in monasteries were treasures and looting not learning languages :D but some of vikings could known Greek becouse some of them were hired as mercenaries by Bysantine empire (east Roman empire) which use Greek not Latin.
