I agree with you in that I feel Jodie Whittaker was miscast for the part. She could never make a speech akin to the one in the Zygon Inversion. But I do hold Chibnall more accountable, he chose to cast his friend instead of someone who's best for the role. Ncuti hasn't even been featured on the show yet, and I already sense that he has very good range, which is what you need to have when playing such an iconic character. The first 4 actors in the revived show felt like the same man. Jodie feels like a completely different character that has the same principles as the others, but the essence and soul of the character isn't there. This probably also has a lot to do with Chibnall's writing of the character. I'm more excited that Russel is back, but I'm hoping for a more toned down version of his writing style, think less End of Time and more Parting of the Ways or Midnight

I would place Ruth between 2 and 3, mainly because of the inconsistency of the whole TARDIS debacle stuff. It would also allow for all of the Timeless Child incarnations, pre Hartnell, not be actual Doctor incarnations, just another group of people The Doctor used to be, working under division - maybe even a bad person? This also allows Hartnell to still be the OG Doctor, the one to make the promise. Personally, I don't think that title should ever be be stripped from him. Ruth's incarnation would be the one who's re-recruited by Division (again), but when Ruth finds out she'd been working for Division before Hartnell's Doctor, doing some pretty shady stuff, she runs away and hides out, while Division tries to come after, and erase her memories again. This leads to the events that take place in Fugitive of The Judoon. Eventually they do catch up to her, and just erase the memory of her incarnation, for some reason.

make ruth and the timeless child the doctor from an/a alternate/parallel timeline/universe and that explains where the timeless child came from. William Hartnells doctor can still be born on gallifrey a true timelord the 1st incarnation And that way both continuity's can exist in tandem. and the fandom can start to heal.

DW fans who aren't happy about an established white character becoming black are racist? So, equally all those that weren't convinced about a long established male character becoming a woman were I guess misogynists? Hmmm, well looking beyond the labels, could it be that people simply have concerns that are more to do the long history of the character and those changes made little to no sense within that context? Anymore than it did when C4 cast a black woman as the white historical character, Anne Boleyn. I suppose though that concern would also be racist? Well, if considered so, what do you think would be the reaction to a white actor portraying Nelson Mandela or another black historical, or even established fictional, figure? But that wouldn't be allowed to happen would it? As it would be pegged as cultural appropriation. For many, rather an entertaining Sci-Fi show, DW has sadly become a tool for promoting woke ideology. Whittaker's time included so much of this, like the story that happened to include men giving birth - what a coincidence that reflected a woke ideology that men can get pregnant too. This ideology driven crusade led to poorly written stories and declining audience ratings. At the end of Whittaker's tenure Rotten Tomatoes recorded an audience approval of S12 16% and S13 I couldn't confirm, but I believe 'The Quartering' reported this as well under 10%. Adding to the show now being a woke tool, if the latest casting was purely on the merit of the actors, why was it necessary as part of the show's promotion to announce the new doctor and companion's sexuality? Maybe I missed previous Dr Who appointee's being celebrated as white, straight actors. Why was it relevant to even bring their sexuality into it if this isn't a woke show? Incidentally, bit of a straw argument to say if it was woke casting Gatwa would be a bad actor. Why? Are you saying because he's black he cant act?! Clearly, he's a good actor. It's not about him, its about the character of DW being changed to promote woke ideology . Well, enjoy the woke show for those that want it.

I actually feel Jodie could have been a good Doctor, and have THE Doctor, running through her. I feel like Jodie, herself, had the charisma and the "comand the room" feel to her, which already proves to me she could pull it off. The writing for her Doctor just made her seem so... Supporting character-y? I do agree though, that Chibnall did cast a female for the sake of it, to say he was the first one. He picked an actress who was good, just didn't have an idea how to craft one. That's my opinion at least.

@@joeespin4377 I wouldn't go so far to say 'everything' about it was terrible, there was some enjoyable moments, and some fine episodes, the problem stemmed was the fact the prior eras had superior writing and directing thus everything felt more actually at stake rather then 'monster of the week' territory. As I understand it, the BBC have a mandatory diversity quota of 20% for all new on screen productions including Doctor Who. That means the producer doesn't always have an absolute free choice. Sometimes it makes sense to do some research before throwing around accusations of racism for questioning motives. Positive discrimination is still discrimination no matter how well meaning. As we don't know how the shortlist or audition process was carried out, (was it open to the public), it is impossible to rule out box ticking, or determine how talented someone is compared to the competition they faced. Chris Chibnall said Jody blew him away with her talent as well during her audition, I seem to remember, and look how that turned out.
@samchandler7747
@samchandler7747 2 года назад
We'll see how Ncuti Gatwa does in the role, he certainly deserves the benefit of the doubt. As I see it though, the problem here is at least partially caused by the BBC. By pushing so fanatically for diverse and inclusive casting (not a bad thing in itself, it's just the intensity of the push that's the problem), they've created a situation where people are prone to doubt whether a BAME actor got their job because of merit, or because of their ethnicity. In the case of Ncuti Gatwa, its more than likely because of merit. He seems to be a great and likeable actor, and fingers crossed he'll knock it out of the park. But, so long as the BBC continues to aggressively push this overtly political agenda, people will continue to have doubts about whether someone was cast because of talent, or because of politics. That's not good for BAME actors as much as anyone else - who deserve to be recognised for their talent and judged based on the contents of their characters. I really do believe that positive discrimination (in many cases, at least) is a well-meaning but flawed policy that too often serves as the handmaiden (not the enemy) of real racism.

I don't think it's woke casting. I think the fact the last 3 Doctors (including Fugitive) have been not white men has made people wonder if it's been intentional. They could still hire a good actor but just one who's not a white man so it *could* be "woke" casting. However, I don't think it is. I wonder what would have happened if it was a white man again? I think there would have been backlash there too where people would say "oh you had 1 shot with a woman and it didn't work and back to the status quo of a white British man". And as you said Jodie was a diversity casting as Chibnall admitted he wanted a female Doctor specifically. Which is fine. I think it's fine if they did new intentionally want to hire a non white actor. I would have felt different on this in the past and felt they should just cast the best for the role but maybe going for something different isn't that bad a thing. But RTD has straight up said it wasn't woke casting and there's no reason to not believe him. I hopes he's good as right now I can't see it. I know Matt was only 26 but he just seems too young based on his Sex Education character. But he's an actor so I'm sure he can play older as Matt did. I'm very interested to see how he plays the Doctors. Will he play him more straight or a bit flamboyant/camp? What accent will he use? I'm intrigued. In the fee scneses she's had Jo Martin has proven the Doctor can be a woman (Jodi isn't bad but even Jodi haters mostly like Jos portrayal.) And it's dumb to day this but she lived the Doctor can be black too. I remember when she was revealed as being the Doctor and I was shocked at the reveal but didn't for one second think OMG a black Doctor. Was only when headlines referred to her as the first black doctor that I realised "oh yeah I guess she is".

I didn't enjoy Jodie, but I didn't enjoy Peter Capaldi as much as Matt Smith and David Tennant either. Not because she's a woman but because I just didn't enjoy her direction, writing? I don't judge until I see them, we can't fairly judge without anything to go on. I've seen woke stuff ruin things before, but this doesn't seem like that. Like with Bill, the fact that she was lesbian was basically her personality, but Jodie wasn't "woke" if I'm honest, and we can't say the new guy is until we see him in action. People are just too fast to judge.

Now it's 'the doctor can be any white person!' The whole 'woke casting' thing makes no sense to me. As much as Russell T Davies could have hired a shit actor who's black to play the doctor, he could have also cast a great black actor. And presuming he had the choice, which he does because it's doctor who, what do you think he'd go for?

I think people misunderstand why Doctor Who fans were upset with Jodie's casting and are hesitant to celebrate Ncuti. It isn't because she's a woman or he's black, it's why she's a woman and he's black. The fear was Doctor Who would become very heavy-handed with its political content because "it's about time" right? I had high hopes for Jodie, but those hopes were dashed by Rosa and incinerated by The Timeless Children. Now Ncuti is the Doctor and the sceptic fans fear they'll never regain the escapist romp across space and time that they fell in love with all those years ago. I'll give Ncuti a chance, RTD is a real writer, I trust he can be more subtle than Chibnall and therefore, less annoying. RTD is a course correction, he's the only reason fans who checked out are even paying notice, but if he turns out to effectively be a continuation of Chibnall the show won't make it, It doesn't get any more chances.

Great discussion piece Stephen. Completely understand where your coming from with the Whittaker/Chbinall era - although I would say that I have enjoyed it for the most part (or at least the ideas he was trying to convey) I fully appreciate that the story of the timeless child could have been told a hell of a lot better. Your theory on why the Doctor has always been a white male is actually really intriguing. I personally thought the only explanation needed is that its an alien that can completely rewrite their DNA on a molecular level but apparently some people can't fathom that. Expanding on your theory a little bit, maybe the regeneration energy given to the Doctor could've been the Timelords performing some sort of blood ritual - so the reason that the Doctor would change race or gender would be a result of the "donor" being of that race or gender. Dunno if I explained that well but that's what I was thinking of when you were explaining your theory. As for the casting itself, I'm really intrigued to see where this new era will take the show. I have never heard of Ncuti before and having spent quite a bit of time finding out more about him, I find it fascinating that I can't guess how he will play the role but the fact that RTD was originally going with someone else before Ncuti came along proves the decision was based entirely on whether he was the right fit (which is how all casting decisions should be decided) and I wish him all the best 😎.

If she's before hartnell, she wouldn't have a police box design, she wouldn't have landed in the 60s and buried it back then due to chameleon arch changes the biology of a time Lord meaning she'll age like a human. So Ruth doctor couldn't be before hartnell. Because we know hartnell didn't start with a police design until it got stuck in the first episode after leaving the 60s.

The Doctor didn't have that Tardis until Hartnell. So maybe they had a different form of time travel or another tardis which was damaged. So they tracked down another tardis - not knowing where it came from - and it turns out this was the same tardis used by their future regeneration. The one with the broken chameleon circuit. After they were captured by Division and had their memory wiped, the time lords sent the police box back to the moment after it had been taken.

Sadly all fandoms that is active online is prone to the "hyperbole hate overreaction" circus. Its kinda turned into the way a lot of youtubers in fandoms stay afloat. Like the quartering. Massively overreacting, creating strawmen and missing the point, is almost part of the course when a fandom get new content these days. But for some casual fans, I feel the skin deep take on woke criticism some fans have is "valid". Because media cooperation's failed shoehorned attempts to have some inclusion/ representation for everyone. Have ruined stories, characters and some shows potential. And itself, created some really bad stereo-types. Nothing is worse for black representation than the stereotypical gay declawed man, or the butch (often lesbian) woman that need no man and can fix anything herself. But I agree with what you said, if it turns out he is not right the The Doctor part, aka shit as you said, we will notice fast. And if it is a "woke" agenda, then we will probably see the story take hit, in effort tell that agenda. But until we get to see both the acting and the story unfold, he should be given a chance. I don't get the parts of fandoms that think its okay to pre-make the lynch squad and publicly put some on trail for something we haven't seen unfold yet. Especially since he is the actor and not the writer or producer of the show. He have literary no say in the matter.

I never liked the idea of the Doctor regenerating into a woman (to me, it just never made sense - and for the record, I don't want Susan or Romana played by men either)... but I find myself actually pretty excited to see Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor in action. I'd never heard of him before he was cast as the Doctor and I am completely unfamiliar with his past work... but that's okay. I've had that experience with most of the Doctor's... and it doesn't seem to affect my impressions of them once they become the incumbent Doctor. It's actually nice to be excited for the future of the show again, to be honest.

Hi man. My issue is with what he was saying at the interviews about representation and being seen. That’s totally fine if those are his political beliefs and like many actors he could keep his politics out of the Character. It just doesn’t fill me with much optimism. I wish I had as much as you but after 5 years of Whittaker I’m still bitter 😅 End of the day we haven’t seen him play the roll so we can’t say it’s woke. I understand where you're coming from as ideas of being recognaised and representation have been weaponised over the past decade. However as I said in a previous comment that should be seen as a by product of his being cast, and not as the primary factor. In the end all we can do is wait and see, but in the meantime all judgements on his choice should be reserved. For all we know he could be the best doctor ever, worst doctor ever, or just average. The whole point is we don't know yet because we can't know yet. But it never hurts to live in hope.

I also really liked the Timeless Child twist on my first viewing. After two whole seasons of just BORING junk that lead nowhere, it was really refreshing to have a tease for a plot I couldn't even begin to understand. It felt like when The Impossible Astronaut aired for the first time and we all saw the Doctor straight up die. My initial thought then was "Oh wow! I wonder how they're gonna write themselves out of this!" with a huge grin on my face. I didn't particularly choose one side or the other when I saw people argue about the Timeless Child. But when Flux came out, I was on top of the world. Jodie kinda took a back seat while the plot just went crazy and I was loving it. Every episode was so well done! ...until the finale... None of the plot was wrapped up in any satisfying way. The characters all turned out to be unimportant and a waste of time. Doctor Who returned to being Chibnall's garbage that he didn't know what to do with. So as of now, the past few years of the show have been a waste. I really hope RTD addresses the arc and either spins it into something worthwhile or erases it entirely. I have high hopes for Ncuti and his talents!

A lot of sci fi is allegorical and has a message. It’s note “woke” in the context the term is being used today. Classic sci fi films that had something to say were successful and are loved just for that: they had something to say. What we have today is generic and derivative and filled with completely transparent tokenism and virtue signalling, in an age when everyone is doing the same, and then doubling down when it doesn’t take and labelling the critics “bigots”

If I can get my 2 cents in here. All shows, movies, really many more things in entertainment put out descriptions of what they need these characters in their rolls to look like. Obviously in order to cast Gatwa, skin color was part of that description. If that wasn't the case then it's a massive coincidence that Black, Asian, female, etc. characters rarely veer from those identities. I'm going to be broad here because I follow this channel for the Battlebots reviews and don't have much of an interest in Dr. Who. I'm not familiar with Gatwa either but I feel that I can give him the benefit of the doubt because I trust how you described his performances. Tokenization and the actor playing the tokenized character are very different and a very good and respectable actor can happen to be playing a tokenized character. A good example is Samuel Jackson's Nick Fury. Fury was white when he was introduced yet Jackson's interpretation of the character was very well done and backed up with good writing especially in the earlier Marvel movies. That alone doesn't mean he should have been race-swapped, and that opinion faults the people that decided to swap him, not who he was swapped in for. It's the same for bringing in a black Dr.; Gatwa isn't a 'diversity hire' because he didn't get the job solely on being black, but being black was likely a requirement, just that it wasn't the only requirement. The first 12 Dr.'s roles likely had 'Caucasian male' as a requirement too. Many studios have diversity quotas and many have openly disclosed that; there's no way they form those quotas and don't pick which characters are going to have which identities. Overall I don't believe that everyone arguing against a black Dr. is doing so in good faith but please don't equate that to everyone being skeptical of it to being racists. I'm open to clear up anything about my own takes here. That's all I've got to say; it's not my franchise after all so I can't address it head on.

Chibnall really put Jodie in a real unfortunate position. I am sure she is grateful for the opportunity, but it was such a shame, cause she is a good actor. I am all for a new female Doctor in the future tho -- won't let a stunt casting or bad writing sour me on an entire gender of actors. Lol I don't think there is any problem with progressive messaging even, but if you have very bad writing, or ham-fisted, on-the-nose dialogue, then it just gives people who already have a problem with that a method of attack and it becomes quite difficult to defend when they say you are letting these things hamper the story. However, if you do progressive messaging with good acting, writing and dialogue, it will become much harder for them to attack. People ultimately just want a good show. I don't think Doctor Who will get away from progressive messaging, I simply think it will have good writing again.

I think what helps soften the blow of these is characters like The General and The Master. The General regenerated from an old white man to a young black woman and apparently, that old white man was the only time The General was male. So it wasn't that far-fetched for the Doctor to become a woman after a long line of dudes. What seals the deal is The Master/Missy. Not only did the Master regenerate into a woman but the next time we see them after The Doctor Falls, he's a person of colour. So now we think: 'Oh! Time Lords can change race! It's not just The General'. So it is easier to accept Ncuti Gatwa and to a lesser extent Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor because other Time Lords have done it before.

I’ve had a similar head cannon about the second regen cycle you mentioned for a while now. My idea was that a Timelord’s natural regeneration cycle was more ‘contained’, with them typically staying the same sex (Gender swapping could happen, it was just more rare). I just thought it would make sense that being given a cycle of ‘unnatural regenerations’ would lead to those regenerations being more chaotic and less predictable. It also explains why we haven’t seen a time lord switch genders while regenerating until the new series, with every on screen example of a gender switch being someone who was on an added regeneration cycle. (Master given more regenerations during the time war, The general being in a political position that would allow them to receive extra regenerations, and The Doctor receiving more on Trenzalore) This would have been really easy to explain to the audience too. Just have the Doctor say a line along the lines of, “I never changed sex while regenerating before, well new regeneration cycle, new rule” I also completely agree with the rest of your video. I completely understand being weary of the show’s decisions being ‘woke’, especially after Chibnall’s run. That being said, there is absolutely no reason to think that this casting is ‘woke’. RTD has delivered a good show to us once, and I have full faith he can do it again, so I completely trust his casting decisions. I’m honestly excited about Doctor who for the first time in a long time, and can’t wait to see him in the role.
