I had the privilege of meeting Yvon Durelle about ten years ago, in his house/museum in a small town in northern New Brunswick. As I was going through the pictures and memorabilia, he suddenly showed up with a warm greeting. Apart from his generous laugh and good cheer, I'll never forget the massive size of his hands! No wonder the great mongoose Archie Moore hit the canvas a few times.

I met Archie Moore once, at Larry Holmes gym in Easton when I trained there in the early 80s. Moore was working with Larry a little, nothing major. Archie was sitting on a stool underneath one of the speed bags, eating a piece of sweet potato pie and just relaxing when I got there that day. My trainer, Earnee Butler, who was a contemporary of Moore’s, but in a different weight class, introduced us. I wasn’t really a serious prizefighter but instead a young writer who was enamored with the sport and wanted to learn about it so that I could write about it. It paid off. Luckily, none of the pros I used to spar with took advantage of me and I’ve survived this long without brain damage. Some of them haven’t, unfortunately. Archie Moore was very cordial as I chatted with him briefly and by that time Holmes had warmed up a bit and Archie worked with him for a short time. I forget who Holmes was preparing to fight, but I remember that Moore was in his corner for several bouts during that period. Good memories...but I’m sad for my friends, just about all of whom who were permanently damaged in the ring.

I watched this program and taped it when it aired. I distinctly remember Hagler v Hearns on there because I remember the panel discussing who they thought won the round and I think all the panelists but one voted for Hearns. Also... at the end of the program Marv asked them to name their favorite or the best round out of the ones they watched that day and unanimously it was Hagler v Hearns. Clear to see that the phantom punch was real, in the slow-mo footage, you can see Ali’s flesh on his right upper arm and upper chest move as the punch landed. Just that it was so fast that many people thought it never landed. If both Marciano and Louis agreed that it also had enough power to knock you down, the guy who said he’ll eat it. Yeah, you go on ahead. As for what happened to Liston after he was knocked down, only Liston himself knows what went on in his head.
@rosewoodsteel6656

Ali was know for many things and was a tremendous boxer, but, power was not one of them. The fight was clearly fixed, period.
@tonym994

a guy who's expected to lose, has to either quit in his corner(1st ALI/Liston fight), or wait to get hit, and lay down. of course in the 2nd fight there was a punch, but it was not hard enough to break an egg. ALI had power, which a lot of fans didn't really recognize, as it was not that reliable. if he nailed a guy properly, he could KO the guy. Zorah Foley was hit really hard by an ALI right hand. Ron Lyle's legs were taken away by an ALI right hand, for long enough that the ref stopped it (Lyle otherwise, may have won on points).ALI had enough power. but his game was speed, movement, and brains.

Having one foot off the floor does not mean you will get knocked down by an arm punch with no weight behind it from a guy without much power, especially if you're built like Sonny Liston. Liston was either threatened or enticed by his mob connections and that's why he took the fall. Even Ali didn't buy it.

I completely agree. I never understood why Dunphy was so revered as a boxing commentator. He was absolutely terrible, and more of a spectator. During a round in the Thrilla in Manila, Ali was pummeling Frazier with numerous combinations and Dunphy said nary a word, but did manage to exclaim, “Ali slipped,” after Ali almost lost his footing after pegging Smokin’ Joe with a right cross. Oh if we only had a play by play announcement by Howard Cosell of that epic battle!

So the way history has been written (with details overlooked), Sonny Liston is the first boxer in history to retain the ability to reach out an arm to break a HEAD FIRST FALL WHILE UNCONSCIOUS heading for the canvas (after struck with a wrist slap punch). Then after he FINALLY hits the canvas, rolls around, gets up, and starts boxing just as fresh as a daisy, fully clear headed. lol Impressive!! And all this history from a small, high-school gym!!! Amazing!!

At best, what you describe would cause Liston to go down from being off-balance but nothing more. Cleveland Williams hit much harder than Ali ever thought of hitting and couldn't get that result. Those histrionic collapses afterward were ridiculous, and yes, Liston nonetheless had a very clear mind and was dodging punches before Walcott stupidly stopped it. The fight should have been ordered to continue, as Ali didn't go to his corner as required and so no count was validly taken.
@javiermigoya
@javiermigoya 9 лет назад
This Documentary looks like it was filmed pre 1985, it may have aired again in 1990 as a filler piece on a sports channel but I'm pretty sure of this, it has to be, not only because it looks older but at no point with all those fights mentioned is there talk of Marvin Hagler VS. Tommy Hearns that fight was originally billed as "The Fight" but later changed to "The War" specifically because of the 1st round which was instantly dubbed the best round in the history of boxing, now that's debatable but for it to not even show up here it definitely had to pre date April 15th 1985

@javiermigoya

Jason not sure exactly why you referenced the Mike Tyson vs. Buster Douglas fight, that fight was one of boxing's greatest upset as in there should of been no way Douglas should of beaten Tyson which falls under a separate category and has nothing to do with this documentary, that fight doesn't qualify as in any of the rounds the fight lasted as one of the greatest rounds in the history of boxing, if you meant The Greatest Upset in Boxing History, then yes, that fight would top them all

I’m going to tell you something you don’t want to hear and probably won’t believe; that is a complete myth that didn’t happen. Dundee did try to buy a little time when he noticed a slight tear in the stitches. But nothing came of it. Dundee didn’t open the tear more and all told the bell rang after one minute and six seconds passed. It’s a fun story that both sides benefited from, but it was hogwash.

Where you derive that statement from is something only you know, because it doesn't follow from what I said at all. But Liston was a champ nobody wanted, and Ali was brash and colorful and people were stupid enough to buy tickets just to see somebody shut him up. He was the drawing card, and Sonny had to be removed from the picture, which he probably was anyway in not taking a dive in the Wepner fight. Liston didn't want to screw with the big boys. It had nothing to do with Ali himself.

1981lashlarue I remember that. I never really cared for Tyson either (WAY overrated), but I thought it was cold how he ignored Tyson after Dundee’s fighter Pinklon Thomas was knocked out. But it could’ve been possible that Dundee didn’t know that was Tyson trying to get his attention. Plus, I don’t know of any other fighters that Dundee trained that Tyson beat. Tyson mostly defeated journeyman bums and fighters way past their prime. He fought VERY few fighters who were in their primes and had a modicum of boxing skill, and those were the boxers that Dundee tended to affiliate with, with the small exception of Pinklon.

Many thought ref stopped Turpin too early but look at the video: Turpin goes to the ropes and stay there taking punches for 37 seconds not trying to punch back. I think ref did the right thing.

Another thing, Benton's is right, older generations were far stronger, and men get weaker in the West as time goes on. In society in general and in sports. People talk about "modern" training methods and "records" and people being much bigger, blah, blah. But just like talent, muscles get better through use. Look at a modern kid. Yes, he's bigger than 100 years ago but what does he do? He wakes, he sits, he's driven in a car and he's got playstations, ipods and TV. And his great grandaddy could have tied him in a knot. He'll, probably his great grandma could. Technology and wealth physically diminish people.

Very true that's why marciano was so good so strong and never let up. But what he meant was this was before supplements. Men with natural strength are stronger/fitter

Weight training is use of muscles. Straining and taxing muscles makes them bigger and stronger, and that's done today in the gym with weight training. 100 years ago if they were really taxing their muscles like people do today with weights, they would have been much bigger than they were.

And why would he not want to continue to fight? Ali was no power puncher. There's a lot more involved than Sonny not wanting to continue from Ali's end. I guess people don't want to ask the right questions.

That's a good point. But I must stand in the minority on this one. Tunney's one lost was to Hall of Famer MW legend Harry Greb and was avenged whereas Dempsey lost to and had two draws to much lesser opposition Willie Meehan and Jim Flynn while he was still young. I love Dempsey though. His style of fighting is still exciting to watch and I always find the older history of boxing to be fascinating and glorious. And of course it's always fun to talk and argue about it among true boxing fans.:)

Conn should have got on his bicycle and pity patted with Louis. Mike Tyson rates Billy Conn as the greatest light heavyweight of all time. Again, I can't say enough about Conn's chin. To stand up to the amount of blows that man did and at his size, truly amazing. It took some sludge hammer blows and a lot of them to get him out of there. I like Conn's comment as well, something like "I had too much to win for tonight and I tried to knock him out otherwise I'd won easy"

I stand by what I said. He only had Ali and Leonard from the beginning. He got all of his rep from Ali and Leonard, and was a part time trainer for most of the others after they had already risen to prominence. Fact.

Greg, This is your cous, let me say that the boxing footage is great. You know the second Smelling vs Louis 2 People at ringside say you could hear Smelling screaming in pain. At that point in time Louis was very a vindictive fighter, which one can clearly see in that fight. And years later I saw Louis and Conn on a talk show and Conn started talking smack and Louis said in the first fight when I caught you for the second knock down you were unconscious before you hit the canvas!

the 20 seconds was an exaggeration. My point is that he didn't even try to get up until well after the full 10 seconds. Also, the ref, Jersey Joe Walcott, was the least qualified third man ever to step into a ring. He had no idea what he was doing. He probably wasn't in on the fix, but had it been a legit KO punch, he would've just started counting, but it wasn't, hence his surprise. Ali didn't think so either, hence his standing over Liston, telling him to get up.

Are you new to boxing, there was NO neutral corner in 1919. In fact Dempsey was in the 1st bout that had neutral corners + it played a part in one of the biggest debates in boxing history - the long count when Dempsey fought Gene Tunney in 1927 which was 8yrs after the Dempsey vs Willard bout. Check out Willard vs Jack Johnson it was the norm pre 1927 to have NO neutral corner + a boxer who downed his opponent would stand over his fallen opponent waiting to hit them as they got up.

Brace yourself for this: Angelo Dundee is so overrated! He had two amazingly gifted fighters in Ali and Leonard. Other than that, even an avid boxing fan doesn't know any other fighter he managed.

Carmen basillio? Trevor berbick, Jimmy Ellis? George Foremans comeback? Come on man, he wasn't a real trainer per se but as a manager and the chief second in the corner he was a great motivational speaker.

Neutrel corner rule didn't exist when that fight took place. It was for the HW title, Dempsey's biggest moment. He's going to do anything to win it.

Tunney vs Dempsey if that happened a second time it would be Ali vs Tyson. It is literally two fighters that fight the exact same as those 2. Jack Dempsey did the right hook to the body left hook to the head and also the right hook to the body and right uppercut. Ali moved like Tunney and this is practically what would have happened.

Ochir Erkhembayar Actually, Ali vs Frazier would be comparable (Dempsey v Tunney) in styles and they fought 3 times
@toopkarcher4941

peter white Yeah but Frazier was able to walk through all of Ali's shots. Dempsey wasn't able to walk through Tunney's punches. He practically did nothing but that 1 knockdown in their second fight.
@peterwhite507
@peterwhite507 9 лет назад
Ochir Erkhembayar Dempsey did walk through Tunney's punches, he had no fear of Tunney's punching power and was not in good shape for that 1st fight. Ali like Tunney would wear you down with movement and combinations. The comment was mostly regarding styles and Frazier attacked just like Dempsey, crouching low and moving forward looking to destroy with body shots and the devastating left hook. Tyson's comparison to Dempsey would strictly be because they were both the 2 destroyers of their time. The only time Dempsey resembled Tyson was against Willard and that was financial desperation needing the 1st round KO. If you think Ali did nothing in those fights you may want to revisit them. Especially the "Thrilla in Manilla" Classic fights all of them but round 15 Frazier/Ali 1 and the final round of Chavez/Taylor (not sure when this was taped) should have been considered.

The thing about a sport like boxing is that you never can tell ... who would have picked Tunney to beat Dempsey? Or Frazier to beat Ali? Or Ali to beat Liston? Or Jimmy Young to beat Foreman? Or Douglas to beat Tyson? Or Holyfield to beat Tyson? Or Marciano to beat Walcott? Funny things happen in the ring all the time. That's why comparing boxers from different eras is ludicrous, a prime Tyson vs a prime Joe Louis, etc. These are just parlor games.

It's a shame this video was made in 1990, before two of the three best rounds of all time were fought. Those two being round 10 of Holyfield-Bowe 1 and round 9 of Gatti-Ward 1. The third was round 15 of Holmes-Norton. On a side note, this video should be called "15 most famous rounds of boxing" because these were certainly not the best rounds.

Aside from the fact that the footage clearly shows what is not a KO punch, if you believe Ali, why do you believe it was a legit KO? He didn't and are you really trying to tell me that he hit Liston so hard that Liston couldn't even try to get up for a good 20 seconds? It was a flop, just accept it.

Funny how some thought the phantom punch made it look rigged. But we see these all time. Most notable was from Anderson Silva who idolized Ali when he fought Forrest Griffin. Forrest fell the same way and rolled over the same. Both do look funky but not for the guy who got hit.

Good catch, but actually I meant in terms of simply where he stands in the overall heavyweight picture. I rank Liston very high, even though he dove in that fight. We'll never know the reasons. I do know that Liston was intimidated by no man, so there was something behind the paint going on here.

Angelo Dundee said ridiculous things. Tunney's long count was an "atrocity" because it was 40 seconds. You can watch the replay and time it, it was 14 or 15 seconds, which was the correct count due to Dempsey's mistake. He also said that Ali won the first Frazier fight, when he obviously lost at least 10 out of 15 rounds. Even Ali later admitted he lost that one.
