AMD and Intel are battling for a new server space, and it's not with mind-melting performance. Today, we're taking a look at AMD's performance-per-watt entry thanks to Supermicro, loaded with an AMD Epyc 8534P 64-Core CPU that draws just 150W. High Core Count, Super-efficient CPUs are on the way, but at what cost?
But first... What am I drinking???

Crazy that these rival Sapphire Rapids N at lower power draw and that you can pack as much as you can in that 1U. I'd love one of those for home use in a few years.

*drools* Man, I really love what they did with those PCIe lanes. If it were something I felt monetarily comfortable putting in my lab, I'd be ecstatic with a baby 8 core or toddler 16 core one of those in a 2U form factor for fan noise and graphics card sized slot reasons. Alas, I'll be waiting a while.

Undeniably superb video 👍 AMD 8004 Siena line up, too cool 😎. That 8534P is stunning (whereas its $4950 price means around $300 for every 4 cores). SuperMicro has configured an amazing platform. Kindest regards, neighbours and friends. P.s. Had me wondering about the sound. Most likely not different from other 1Us . . . i.e. not comfortable to sit next to.

Great review. Would have loved to have this unit a few months ago for a failover location setup. This would be great in a home-lab (in a few years, when prices have dropped) Is the overall power usage 151W during full load for the entire system?! Is that at 110V or 230V?
@CraftComputing
@CraftComputing 8 месяцев назад
151W was package power, measured through HWiNFO. From the wall was around 235-265W total draw on 110V.

I wonder if that thing would make a good Veeam repository server. Then again, my company demands we buy big brand... I don't think HP will come out with these anytime soon. Is there an on-board RAID controller or does this assume software RAID?

Nice. I think Tyan Transport CX GC73A-B8046 is even nicer system, with a bit nicer board design, but still not easily available in most parts of the world (there are two places in US where one can order, but prices are not that great, and even more expensive than EPYC 9004 systems). But Supermicro also has probably a bit better BMC software, has more reasonable (smaller) PSUs, shorter and lighter. Both are interesting tho. There is also Gigabyte R143-E32 (rev. AAH1), but it is gimped because it has only 4 NVMe drive bays, rest is SATA (or SAS in -EG2 variant), which I think is very very silly. There is also ASRockRACK preparing things, there are some mobos already finalizing (marked "preliminary" on their side, as of April 2024), but not whole servers yet, or mobos for 1U systems. I wish there was a bit more Siena 1U servers available, from guys like 2CRSi maybe (which otherwise make very nice systems).

The thing that bothers me about AMD Epyc is the lack of a competitor to Intel QAT in crypto/SSL acceleration. Probably they're depending on users to buy a smart NIC but that's an additional overhead in the comparisons.

@arthurswart4436

That is an amazing machine. I find it hard to get my head around the mere 860W PSU. With three pcie 4.0 16x slots of at least 75W each, ten SAS drives doing about 25W each, a 150W CPU with about the same Wattage allocated to cooling, RAM at about 5W a stick and a flock of fans throughout the server, those 860W must be gone in no time. Are both PSU's in use with the server scaling into safe mode when one of them fails? Or have those components become at least thrice as power efficient in the last 20 years? I may just miss something, old timer alert...
@morosis82
@morosis82 8 месяцев назад
Most people will be using SSD rather than spinning rust these days which uses a lot less power think 5-7W at full blast per disk. Of course that's something more like 2200MB/s rather than 250MB/s and hundreds of thousands of IOPS per disk.
@CraftComputing

What’s the point of benchmarking against a 2 version old chip? The silicone is different, the power envelope is different… really can’t make any conclusions about performance aside from the specific comparison. What buyer would be comparing between a new Epyc chip or a soon to be decommissioned chip?
@CraftComputing
@CraftComputing 8 месяцев назад
Point me to the warehouse of Epyc Genoa and Sapphire Rapids CPUs and I'd be happy to test them.
@nadtz
@nadtz 8 месяцев назад
Someone looking to replace Rome hardware on a 'budget'. It's obviously not meant to be apples to apples but it shows what these chips can do compared to a platform a lot of people are probably familiar with and there is also the consideration that it's probably the best he had on hand to compare with.
