The 18th Century Ikea Dress Progresses 🧵 The Last Of The Undergarments

The 18th century dress is coming together so quickly! In this episode I'm going to make the stomacher and petticoat- the last of the undergarments, or the first of the visible garments. Only the dress itself to make after this, eek!

The petticoat will fit better if you change out the ties for longer ties and tie them overlapping front and back instead of on the sides. In other words, the ties on the back side should tie to each other in the front, and the ties attached to the front should tie to each other in the back. The waistband and sides of the petticoat should then overlap, hiding the gap, and making it fit a lot better

I just wanted to say the same... As for example Sewstine at the end of this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2R4CMXFbeTI.html 😊

Yes, wanted to say the same. The front waistband and back waistband are supposed to overlap a bit, that way you don't have the gaping at the sides either!

If you Google 18th century pockets, you can make a set to go under your petticoat; then you'll have pockets for your skirt. :)

You should do some embroidery on the stomacher! It would be nice with red and yellow!

Friendly tip the petticoat ties like a apron (back panel ties wrap round and tie at the front and the front panel ties wrap round and tie at the back) then you don't have to worry about taking it in :) hope this helps

Using zip ties in the stomacher instead of steel boning is just fine! Many stomachers weren't even boned, just securely pinned to the stays underneath.

The linen was a great choice for a complimentary fabric. You want your tulip pattern to pop so don’t want competition from a large mass of contrasting color..

Don't know if this is an interesting idea or not, but it would be cool to see a video of you creating outfits with your stays or the other garments you have made for a sort of history bounding look.

With the sizing oddness that you've experienced, where your measurements are so drastically different from what the actual garment is, it might be a good idea to mock up the bodice of the gown. I've seen a lot of people do that type of mockup with the fabric they'll use for the lining so that once you have a good fit, you already have the lining put together!

Looks great! I see others have pointed out how to help with your petticoat. For the stomacher, when I made this pattern I used zip ties as well, and it ended up being fine. Also, on the outer garment I used zip ties, but I did end up adding additional boning at the side seams. I finally posted my video on the end result. I made the bodice without a skirt but I want to do the skirted version soon!

I just made the undergarments for this gown and I am just waiting for my fabric to arrive so I can make this same gown. I would suggest you take your measurements while wearing your stays before choosing what size to make your gown. If you have extra fabric I would suggest a mock up for the bodice. If the mock up fits you can use it as the bodice lining. I love watching your tutorials💕

Once you finish a nice easy project would be a pair of pockets. Very functional, good use for scraps and they can be SUPER cute!

The slots of the petticoats can be used as spaces to access large pockets that you can make and tie around your waist; if you are interested in that feature.

Thank you for the music you used in this video! Not only is it appropriate for the project, but also easy on the ears. 😄👂✨ Don't know how it is in your country, but here in the States, we can often find sheets in secondhand stores for much less than yardage from the fabric store. *Shrug* Hope that was at all helpful .... Best wishes with your project, and Happy Sewing! 💜

It turns out so beautiful! I can't wait for the finished result! For some reason I get major Beauty and The Beast (2017) vibes. Maybe because of the colour palette. Reminds me of one dress Emma Watson wears in the library scene.

Seems like others pointed out the way of tying the petticoat who turned great, so as I have to make a somewhat useless comment, maybe next time you can take the opportunity to make a reversible stomaker by using a contrasting fabric for the back of it, it can allow you much versatility! Nevertheless, this project is going wonderfully and I can't wait to see it completed, and maybe going through the rabbit hole of historycal costuming!

I would remeasure your bust and waistline over the stays, so you have that new measurement. it can change quite alot depending on how tight you lace and how many layers of fabric there are. And when picking the right size in printed patterns; I always doublecheck the measurement on the pattern pieces. by measuring along the waistline of the pattern . Usually they are marked, if not you can lay them out flat with the seams and balancemarks lining up and measure where the waistline seems to be.

Great job! Love the tulip fabric. Yes, definitely make a mock-up of the dress first in an inexpensive fabric. You can then use it as a dress or petticoat so that nothing is wasted.

Couldn’t help but notice that you’re skipping a step in threading your machine. There’s a hook that’s facing down to the left of the tension dial. You go under that before threading through the take up lever. Your bobbin winder is also popping way before the bobbin is full. You may want to get it serviced.

Lovely. I might be wrong, but I believe the hip pad is supposed to be worn under the stay. Allowing the tabs to spread out over it, and hold up the skirt.

You need to tie the back panel of the petticoat at the front, the the front panel ties at the back. The front panel sides of the petticoat will then hide the slits for the pockets and prevent gaping.

Are you going to make a pair of pockets to go with the dress?? That's part of what the slits on the sides are for. I have seen lots of people commenting about tying it differently so I won't repeat that.

you need to make the bands in sides longer. the front part of skirt is tied behind back and back parts are tied infront. the skirt overlaps in side so you can´t see stuff skowed in the gaps
@raraavis7782

Ok, but that stomacher just screams for some fancy embroidery or other decoration, doesn't it? Ribbons, ruffles... something. Since it's going to be visible under the gown? It's a beautiful neutral color, but very plain for this type of garment. But, well... that's best decided, after the gown is finished, I guess. Maybe I'm wrong and it'll look lovely by itself in contrast with the printed fabric. It's just the first thing, that came to my mind, when you showed the finished pieces. It looks more like an undergarment, then the actual undergarments, if you know, what I mean.
@raraavis7782

Great work so far, btw. I have never attempted a sewing project of that scale myself, even though I do love historical fashion and have the sewing experience necessary. But I live in an even tinier appartement then you and can't justify making anything, that isn't everyday wear and requires storage. It's great fun, to watch other people succeed at these type of project, though!

I agree, it's the 1700's! It needs at least 1 row of ruffles to look complete.
@1990Phillip

The ties are the wrong length and need to be longer. The way you tie it is to take the back ties bring them in front and tie it. Then you take the front ties to the back and them them. Then the petticoat will fit you better.

Just curious is your size 12 measurement when you aren’t in stays? I’m guessing in stays you are laced down to a measurement closer to the 8 your mentioning. I have seen other costubers use corseted measurements for some projects and normal ones for others.
