This is awesome. I love that you are digging deep to uncover games lost to history. And you're going entirely off old newspapers. There are not even any photos. Incredible.

I did know about this series, but never knew why they didn't complete it. The chaotic nature of the early years of the MLB makes the 90s cowboys look like a group of youth pastors

Neither a 15 game postseason series nor a postseason series ending in a tie were unprecedented. In 1885, the National League Champion Chicago White Stockings (now Cubs) played the American Association Champion St. Louis Browns (now Cardinals). The first game was called due to darkness and ended in a 5-5 tie. The second game ended when the Browns walked off the field to protest an umpire ruling and was forfeited to Chicago. The Browns took 3 of the final five games and the series ended in a 3-3-1 tie, though the Browns insisted that the forfeit didn't count and they actually won 3-2. Two years later, in 1887, the Browns and the National League Champion Detroit Wolverines (now defunct), got ambitious and scheduled a 15 game tour which was played in Detroit, St. Louis, and a few other cities. The Wolverines won their eighth game in Game 11, but the teams played out the string with the Wolverines winning 10-5.

Very interesting! I’d somehow never heard of this series. Old newspaper articles are a goldmine. Go Colts!

Yeah - it's really strange that you never hear people talking about this one. Wikipedia mentions this series - but it claims that it was a best of 7 series, which it wasn't.

Interesting topic. I'm curious what resource(s) you use to research old newspapers.

I use newspapers.com, Paper of Record (for The Sporting News), and The Sporting Life archives, which you can find for free. I also use Google News from time to time, especially for 1901 Baltimore newspapers.

With a big crowd at this city series going on at the same time as the World Series (or later Temple Cup) being renewed is a good example of regional appeal of baseball

True - but there was no way for fans to follow the World Series live in those days. I believe this is before they would set up the big scoreboards outside the newspaper offices. The fact that the Cubs and White Sox had never met before almost certainly added to the attractiveness.

@@baseballreplayjournal baseball scores sent via telegraph like any news had been going on for some time, but by the 1880s game reports were being sent to theaters and saloons. Chicago's ballpark had a board display in the 1880s. But not sure if they pulled the crowds like you see in pictures from the 19-teens outside of newspapers.

Of course the players wanted this. They wanted extra cash. I wonder what arrangements were made for payment; player shares ect? When McGraw cancelled the 1904 WS the Giants' players weren't happy.

I've got to assume that the money for these games were baked into the contracts for that year. The papers make it clear that the players were only under contract through October 15. Some articles insinuate that the White Sox players wanted to play the extra game regardless - but it's hard to tell what the truth is.

@@baseballreplayjournal I don't think anybody could get those guys to play 15 extra games for nothing. The whole thing was about money not love of the game.

How did the White Sox dominate in 1900, one year before the formation of the AL? Referring to comment made at 3:00.

The American League existed in 1900. See here: baseballreplayjournal.substack.com/p/the-forgotten-league? As you can see, I've done a lot of research into this subject. The fact that most baseball fans don't know that the American League existed in 1900 is an absolute shame.
