At 10 a. m. on February 12th, 1908, 6 teams in automobiles set off on the Great New York to Paris race. Over 250,000 people were in Times Square to see them off. They would undertake the most extraordinary expedition of their time: a 13,000-mile overland automotive race westward from New York to Paris.
The teams were made up of 6 cars from four nations: The United States, German and France, and Italy. France fielded 3 teams De Dion-Bouton, Motobloc, and Sizaire-Naudin. The Italian team fielded a Zust, the German team a Protos, and the American team raced a Thomas Flyer.
Only 2,200 miles of the race were supposed to be used by boat or train. Over river crossings, unpaved roads, and open fields, the teams ultimately faced 22,000 miles of dangerous conditions on their way to the finish line.
