Honestly I think he spent more money than the guitar was worth. I think the value of the guitar and the repair bill combine he could have gone a decent vintage Gibson that he didn’t have to get restored but to each his own, that’s what I thought of that video
@@greg7656 Really great point. Lots of people kinda missed that detail. I enjoyed following along with the restauration he did to the guitar. But each to their own.
Sad that Trogly didn't want to name Matthew, or give a link to the episodes ... (A bit too 'businesslike' not to have made that connection for viewers, in my opinion !)
Kind of wondered that, he's mentioned other RU-vidrs before, even showed support for Stevie Ts site getting hacked, I am not sure why Matthew Scott isn't mentioned
Wow, this is probably the most impressive resto I have seen given the starting condition. Because the history, the story, and the provenance of the guitar, I don't even think this will take all that much of a hit in value. At least not over time. Tornados are a part of Americana and I think there are collectors who would pay a premium for this guitar. Collectors will always pay more for a good story.
"Documented on another channel" come on man just shout out Matthew Scott, he's a great guy and it just comes across like you're salty he got so many views out of that guitar.
I remember that storm.... it's only 45 minutes away from me. I actually live 5 minutes away from Dorothy's grave. Yes L. Frank Baum the author of "The Wizard of Oz" had a niece named Dorothy. Oddly enough a tree near her grave was struck by lightning 🌩. They carved the trunk into the likeness of Dorothy from the film.
One fell off my wall mount just the other day. It only damaged the floor and gave me a jump scare. Not even a scratch on the guitar. Then again my les Paul would never fall because of the headstock shape. The tele peghead is too narrow.
TheMrMRsmoke... yes, absolutely would've!! Also,it would've stayed in tune too!🤣👍 ..I swear,my Tele stays in tune NO MATTER what its went through, I swear its the most "stay in tune guitar" ever! 🤣
Do you own any acoustics? none of them take impacts well. preferences are more about sound & feel. reasonable durability is assumed with the major brands. there's a reason they don't call a hammer an instrument.
I LIVE IN WASHINGTON, IL WHERE THE TORNADO TORE THROUGH TOWN. I remember it happening like it was yesterday. Fortunately, I wasn't hit by the tornado, but it is still pretty traumatic to those who were affected.
Hey! Just now seeing this. The shot at 8:47 I filmed in Nashville and sent to Jared! Loved this video putting the whole story together. Such a special guitar!
I like the ruby tornado on the headstock better than the knob idea as I'm a traditional kinda guy and just love the way a les paul looks even the knobs
I was waiting to hear about the original bridge/tailpiece. Dorothy had no visible screw holes for either on the top, yet was restored with a bridge requiring two posts. Was the original bridge just glued on?
What an incredible restoration!!!! It gives me so much joy knowing this old '52 got a new lease on life!!! Shout out to luthiers!!!! And Jared for making it happen.
Brings new meaning to worn finish. I sent you the link because I was hoping you could do it justice and you did. I dont know how many times you got sent it but I hate trying to look at anything on Google since they want to make it about them and not the actual story in most cases. Thanks for delving in and fishing out the stuff that mattered on this guitar.
This is so cool to me because it's a local story. That gecko burst dude is TJ, my first guitar teacher at Josh's Guitar Shop in Pekin, IL. My current guitar teacher Damien (releasing his own music under the name Damien Crow on iTunes/Spotify) actually owns that Gecko Burst LP now and it appears in some of his songs. Getting a good look at that guitar inspired me to get my own LP, and that's how I found your RU-vid channel in the first place. Very cool to see this come full circle. LOL And yeah, Washington was basically leveled. I know people who lived in hotels and trailers for a year or more while houses were rebuilt. Totally devastating. Neat to see something come out of it.
I bought that Gibson Nighthawk hard case from you on a Trade Tuesday. It was a 1990’s case that fit my 1996 Gibson Nighthawk perfectly! Thanks again, Trogly!!
Absolutely stunning work on the Gold top, personally I would have had period specific binding on the neck as it frames the fingerboard, ironically the lack of binding gives it a more modern (Huber?) appearance.
Great video Austin! The story is so cool and JJN is the real deal. A guitar hero for our time. Awesome to see he has this restored gem and it's going to see continuous use on tour. I hate to see case queens. Guitars are meant to be played. God bless and rock on 👍😎🎸
It looks like they put holes in the top for the bridge that does not have a foot. The origional bridge was floating and only held in position by the downward string pressure.
My dad got me my first guitar when I was in 7th grade. It was a charvel acoustic. It was completely destroyed in the joplin tornado. All we found was the headstock. My dad's been looking ever since for a replacement.
That tornado decal is the only thing I’d change - put a pair of slippers or something instead, but otherwise this is kind of a dream guitar! I love a guitar with a good survival story
Wouldn't the decent thing have been to find the original owner - they couldn't live too far from there, and not many people have an early-1950's Les Paul. I'm surprised nobody thought of doing that, the owner likely lost many other things, so getting back their prized guitar might have been a huge psychological lift for them, but I guess we'll never know?
Anyone think about finding WHOSE guitar it is?!? I mean who ever went through the hurricane/tornado if he/she lived probably have it hard enough right? I dig Jared a lot,he means well, I am surprised that he doesn't find the REAL owner and gift this to them. They are just assuming they're dead? I couldn't keep that without at least finding out? Karma brother, I'm a big believer, witnessed a lot in my life. He needs to do the Right thing, and who knows they may Give it too him themselves, with their blessing.
@@wesleyalan9179 Do you really think that someone will forget that? That they're probably destroyed inside? If they were able to survive the storm, and someone found it and didn't even make an attempt to reunite it with the true owner? If they had tried Jared should have prefaced this story with that. Not hating, I'm a guitar freak and admire Jared and the guitar community that does cool shit like this, that's why I know about it.......still,who Lost it?
@@bobbyparks801 No, I would never believe that ANYONE would forget that they had a 52' LP...lol,thats just ludicrous😅 to think that! But yeah, I absolutely agree with you on all points,man...ALL POINTS!😁👍
If you check JJN IG post, the person who found it, tracked the original owner before giving it to JJN, he was dead, of course, but the daughter of the owner gave her blessing to give the guitar to Jared.
Saw Jared at Aftershock last month, and he was playing that Goldtop and my brain fking exploded seeing him play that thing knowing it was literally in an EF4 tornado and was now being played at a festival to tell the tale, it was an absolutely religious experience!
Jared said the reason they left the neck alone is to show what piece is historic and original and what piece is new so it basically tells the story of the guitar. instead of faking the wear and making it all look old. ;)
And your little dog Toto too!! New meaning to "Oz Fest". That guy does miracle restos'. And his photos are so sharp, you can see into the pores of the wood. Reiss. of Dorthy and Goodwill=waaaay coool. Trogly gets Floyd Lite and gets his shred on!! Ü♥♫
I have a 1952 golden top Les paul that needs restored. It has two different types of wood in the body and the neck was shaved down to a small profile instead of the usual thick necks. It’s has a long story to it.
Before you said who did the work, the guy who restore that other guys Les Paul came to mind, and then you show the photo of the other restore and I thought wow what a good guess.
