The Chrysler engineers were extremely talented and built this engine with power and durability in mind, great job by them. My first car in 1977 was 1960 Imperial Crown with the 413 -single 4 barrel and my second car was 68 300 with a 440 and that thing was an absolute torque monster. Both great cars, and sadly, the 68 300 was hit and totalled right in front of my house as I parked it. I was hit by a local kid a couple years younger than me, he was drinking and hit me with his 1970 Olds 98, both cars totalled and we all walked away. He hit my 68 300 so hard that it was lifted over the curb and it landed 2 houses down the block with me still in it. A miracle that none of us were hurt, not even a scratch.

A guy in the neighborhood had one of these when I was a youngster. Opening the hood was awesome. Big crossram manifold had a cool factor like no other manifold.

Two of my favorite engines. The long-ram from the 300 is IMO the most beautiful engine ever made. I had both a ‘62 Dart and a ‘63 300, and seeing both in this video kinda made me sad TBH.. And that Polara is simply beautiful. MoPar definitely had their shit together back then, and it’s hilarious to see the Hellcat and Demon owners completely unaware of the monsters that MoPar produced 60+ years ago…

Thanks for doing a feature n the Max Wedges. Very nice having a video on Max Wedges that is correct on all the facts. My dad's first super stocker was a new Plymouth Savoy 413/410 that he ran at SoCal tracks in 1962 for Al Roberts Plymouth. That was followed in 1963 by Savoy 426/415 and a Belvedere 426/425 that he raced for the dealership. Late in the 1963 model year my dad was leaving the dealer to start a speed shop. At that time he bought a new Savoy 426/425 with an aluminum front end that he owned and raced until selling it in late 1969 to take care of my mom's long recovery from two near fatal strokes that she suffered that year. Before I was old enough to drive I already had got a '63 Savoy race car that was a roller (no drivetrain). A couple of years later (with my dad's help) I was at OCIR racing it. Not long after that I had my '64 Dodge 426 Max Wedge/4 speed that I have raced in NHRA stock classes and NSS events ever since. I lost track of my dad's Savoy until its most recent collector/owner contacted me asking for information and stories about its racing days (it was retired from racing by the early seventies and bought by the first of a series of collectors). A few years later I was offered the chance to buy it. It arrived at my home almost exactly 48 years after my dad sold it.

It’s still a good song regardless who wins. We all know if the outcome was left to the car, not the band, the 413 is winning especially taking the Vette of the line as said in the song. I love the fuel injected Corvettes also, actually all Vettes.

The Max Wedge continues to be a boon to Mopar fans today thanks to the heads. They proved as templates for companies like Trick Flow and Edelbrock to make raised & enlarged port variants that really step up the power potential of the BBM without a ton of extra cost and special parts.

most Car companies back then were WAY UNDERATING the engines produced then , for insurance purposes from research i did on a school paper years ago. the 70 caddy 500 cid was grossly underrated at 425hp , in reality is was about 625-650 ... so its fair to say this monster is prolly pushing over 500 ... and the famous beach boys song "shut down" didnt really give it a fair shake lol...IMO anyways! keep up the great work on these vids and keep'em comin!

Why is the 64 GTO considered the first muscle car, and not this?
@ultimatemusclecar
@ultimatemusclecar 3 месяца назад
I agree with you. I think it's because the '64 GTO was a street car and the Max Wedge engines weren't really street cars even though anybody can order one and drive it on the street. They did have 11.0 or 13.5 compression ratios and required 102 octane or more. That may be the reason why.

Even a plain 413 was unbeatable pulling an Airstream trailer through the Rockies. And after your old dying tree is cut down and the stump needs to be pulled, hitch it to your C-body 413
