Anyone else notice who this is like the self titled album mixed with iliwys album? Even the music video, how the split screen is black and white, then the other in color? Brilliant. The song is really growing on me. I think this will be a great album.
This is hitting really hard. “When i was 25 and afraid to go outside.” Now that I am 25, that line hits harder than it ever did. Take care of your mental health everybody. Its rough out here. Give yourself a try.
its hard to put into words what this song has come to mean to me in the last couple years. from ages 20-26 i struggled a lot with substance abuse of different kinds, mainly heroin and crack, but a little of everything here and there. im 27 and been clean for nearly a year. ive been giving myself a try finally for once in my life and liking what im seeing.
I just found this song but I love it so much because the overall message is "you're gonna make mistakes kid just learn from them and give life a good run"
One of the lines even says something about a 16 year old girl who had the box tattooed on her arm and took her life. The box is the 1975’s signature box. She was a fan too.
This song has been following me around ever since it came out in 2018, and it’s honestly such a soothing feeling. Like whenever I listen to it I feel both old and young, inspired to what lies ahead and behind myself. I changed countries, hair colors, environments, mental conditions, but this one has something that stays the same and that feels like it’s your own voice singing. Beautiful, Matty, beautiful.
you have no idea how many times your music has saved me. i'm currently going through another severe depressive episode and somehow its 2:30 am and i ended up with this song. it just reminded me that there's something left inside of me that still wants to live. i haven't been able to move or get out of bed for days but today this song had me dancing, jumping and singing around my room. and i know i am by far not the only one you literally saved over the years. thanks so much guys for your music. keep trying ❤
Any time a band changes their sound, everyone loses their shit but it ends up gaining new fans as well as respect from fans that can actually acknowledge the fact that different isn’t bad and the same album over and over is boring. That aside I’m insanely attracted to this video
Or maybe people think the song is bad and 1) expected them to create something better and 2) would have not liked this song even if it wasn't by the 1975
You learn a couple things when you get to my age Like friends don't lie and it all tastes the same in the dark When your vinyl and your coffee collection is a sign of the times You're getting spiritually enlightened at 29 So just give yourself a try Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give? I found a grey hair in one of my suits Like context in a modern debate I just took it out The only apparatus required for happiness Is your pain and fucking going outside And getting STD's at 27 really isn't the vibe Jane took her own life at 16 She was a kid who had the box tattooed on her arm And I was 25 and afraid to go outside A millennial that baby-boomers like Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give? And what would you say to your younger self? Growing a beard's quite hard And whiskey never starts to taste nice And you'll make a lot of money, and it's funny 'Cause you'll move somewhere sunny and get addicted to drugs And spend obscene amounts on fucking seeds and beans online So just give yourself a try Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give?
"You couldn’t be more wrong actually, I’m unbelievably sentimental, you know, the best thing would be to actually be as earnest as I feel because I know what I’m doing. Just everything that I do, it knows what it is." This doesn't get talked enough, that's some beautiful personal analysis towards music and art in general really.
[Verse 1] You learn a couple things when you get to my age Like friends don't lie and it all tastes the same in the dark When your vinyl and your coffee collection is a sign of the times You're getting spirituality enlightened at 29 [Chorus] So just give yourself a try Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give? [Verse 2] I found a grey hair in one of my zoots Like context in a modern debate I just took it out The only apparatus required for happiness is your pain and fucking going outside And getting STD's at 27 really isn't the vibe Jane took her own life at 16, she was a kid who had the box tattooed on her arm And I was 25 and afraid to go outside A millenial that baby-boomers like [Chorus] Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give? [Bridge] 'And what would you say to your younger self?' Growing a beard's quite hard And whiskey never starts to taste nice And you'll make a lot of money, and it's funny 'Cause you'll move somewhere sunny and get addicted to drugs And spend obscene amounts on fucking seeds and beans online [Chorus] So just give yourself a try Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give yourself a try? Won't you give? you're welcome ctto!

"What would you say to your younger self" This hits too deep.Kind of ironic I'm 17 now but the times I've messed up and took things for granted, this line just made me fall in love with this song...
Well I was in rehab 5 years ago I decided to give the 1975 a try. I literally am so happy I had heard about them and did a deep dive. My life wouldn't be the same without them. Such a small choice made such an incredible impact on my life.
No one else find beauty between the contrast in soft vocals against a rather harsh instrumental? Noticed it even more in the video because he’s so intensely singing yet the vocals are somewhat soothing.
MortalPain same! The mixing on the main guitar is so loud :/ I wish they lowered it or used less gain or SOMETHING. It’s a shame, cuz i find the lyrics and the vocals to be fantastic
this song hits me hard, one of my friends took her life and i almost took mine for depression, anxiety and i get addicted to drugs too. i feel in many ways like this song, so i'm definitely gonna give myself a try
For those saying that this doesn’t sound like The 1975, I guess that’s true but to me they’re returning to their Drive Like I Do sound at least with this particular single. It’s very gritty especially with the guitar loop. Idk it just feels like they’re back making music they grew up on, there’s a certain carefree nostalgia and innocence to it sonically while the lyrics are introspective as well as retrospective with the key line being “what would you say to your younger self” basically matty saying to himself “hey shit is tough but don’t give up on yourself because you’re going places mate” lol I know it’s not the powerhouse or art piece that people were expecting including myself, but I just think it’s a very inspiring new direction for The 1975
Yes! Also to say “that doesn’t sound like The 1975” is silly since they don’t really subscribe to a genre. Sex doesn’t sound like Love Me, which doesn’t sound like fallingforyou. Them changing their sound constantly is kind of their whole persona. That’s why they never keep a band name for too long.
tjohnnie01 i mean they have this kind of identity as an aesthetically and atmospheric pop/rock band like ava and 30stm - they tend to evolve but their core doesn't care even during their pre-the 1975 days. their second album for me is lackluster than the first tbh so here i'm hoping it'll bounce back and that they'll reinvigorate their style.
the guitar loop is very very very annoying in my opinion. its not raw or gritty like the Sex guitar or even like milk. those were rock and roll. this is very synth rock guitar and idk. its overpowering the vocals and the drums are too weaaaakkk. george can lay down a friggen groove where is that at?
Yes! Who is to say what this band is supposed to sound like anyway? Before they were famous they made some tunes where Matty's voice is almost unrecognizable at first because they were experimenting with different styles. The last album sounded different than the first one so what were people expecting this to sound like? It's called evolution and like you said, it's also reminiscent of Drive Like I Do. We'd all get tired if they just tried to reinvent the first album over and over again. I think the people complaining that this doesn't sound like The 1975 are forgetting that Matty has said (many different times) that they have an eclectic taste in music and he thinks genres are dead.
I was nineteen when this song came out, I didn't understand the words very well at the time, unfortunately now I understand them as my mental state has worsened over the years. I have lost many friends, this sometimes makes me feel alone, not to mention suicidal thoughts but rediscovering this song gave me relief. I’ll give myself a try, we don’t know what will come tomorrow.
I swear with mostly every song I hear, It takes a few tries for me to actually enjoy it, but with The 1975’s music that enjoyment comes to me instantly.
I remember when they put a 30 day countdown timer on their website and no one knew what was going to come out on June 1st, 2018. After loving their first 2 albums so much I was so excited to see what was coming next. This song and video dropped and literally changed my life. Give yourself a try is the one song that never fails to inspire me and make me feel grateful for being alive. Rock and roll is dead, god bless THE 1975.
@@letsstartawarsaidmaggieoneday "stealing" guess you (and apparently several thousand other people in this comments section) have never heard of sampling? it isn't stealing whatsoever
@@letsstartawarsaidmaggieoneday I was wondering the same. I love the band, so much. But it would be nice if they'd credit the people from where they took the music to enhance their music and tribute the old legends. :/

this song really came to me in a moment of darkness im 24 years old and i still haven’t figured out what i am or what the fuck im doin with life and everyone’s doin them and im just stuck in time depression anxiety social anxiety overthinking everything but i have this modeling gig for a small business and im going to do it and stop being scared to go outside in going to give myself a try for once because i never did anything i love singing dancing acting modeling im done being scared and sad and just angry at myself bless u for this song
his song writing is literally like nothing else. It's snarky, it mirrors itself, it contradicts itself, it's ironic, it's smart, it's truly a testament to today's culture. He knows EXACTLY what he's doing. it's amazing.
this song is about finding yourself, trying to stay still in this weird tenebrous life, while your mind is getting craziest than ever. this song is about nights when you can't sleep because of your thoughts so you just get older and stay awake, just painting your face or your hair, smoking or doing drugs... and realising stuff. feeling lost and misunderstood. i've been there for so many times...
I’m 49 aiming for my 2nd chance at life. Loving yourself is hard because I struggle with self doubt and so many insecurities but this song LOVEs ME no matter what. God bless you, Matt Healey ❤️
6 years ago I went to my first concert with my friends to see you guys. I felt something I had never felt before, after that I was changed and I wonder how much of the rediculous beautiful intensity I have in my life now stemmed from feeling really in my body but so much more than that for the first time that sweaty summers night 6 years ago.
Give Yourself A Try is a BOP. Keep in mind Love Me was the first song released from iliwys, which isn’t really reflective of how the rest of the album sounds
they suck lmao why this shit on my recomended its like the songs from i different video and they just included them rocking ther heads back and forth it doesn't work I could do a better job haha i actually can't it has a good meaning but like the song is nice and sweet but the video is metal ahhhhh scream and that doesn't happen pisses me off lol.... the song is okay just okay nothing more nothing less i just had to let this out
Yeah, the first track from Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division is great; I really like how 1975 have adopted it, adapted it, made it their own and made it positive
Now I'm preparing for entering to a new college. Getting depressed and losing my confidence, I often return to this song. "Give yourself a try" makes me feel a little stronger.
Can't wait to get the box tattooed on my arm with "give yourself a try" in the frame. Been a fan since the start, 25 now and it's hard to explain just how many times listening to their music all night saved my fucking life and kept me from swallowing the pills or running that blade up my arm. If Matty can push through and has felt all this before and can still find peace and a way to vocalize it, so can I. I want it as a tribute to Jane, who wasn't able to pull through, and in her memory and faith in the future by giving myself a try, I'll wear my proclamation on my sleeve. This song became a promise I made to myself and when I tunnel again, I listen to his words on addiction and put down the bottle. They'll never know, but I'm alive today in a huge part due to this band, no exaggeration.
This song makes me cry every time. Maybe I should shut that voice up in my head and just do my best for once. Maybe I should give myself a try. Maybe I'll surprise myself.
Honestly tho if you're a true fan you'll understand that every album is just a different statement and different art piece, I respect these guys no matter what
can people stop with this "if you're a true fan" bs and just enjoy the music, who cares when you discovered them or if you know the songs "deeper meaning", just enjoy the music
Brian Keogh Some ppl are complaining about how long we have to wait to hear new stuff, which is annoying bc The 1975 always do things a certain way. Yeah, enjoy the music, but she was being honest. You aren't a true fan if you aren't gonna respect their craft/process. It doesn't have much to do with a deeper meaning/when you discovered them.
It’s super refreshing to see a band that’s fearless to experiment with different sounds and not afraid of evolving in what ever direction they want. People are too quick to write off bands that don’t sound the same on every album or song. In my opinion these guys are way ahead of the curve.
I always turn the music I'm listening to way down because I don't want anyone to judge me. This made me turn it up. Thanks Matt. I think I ll give myself a try.
I feel like this song has a deep meaning and there’s such a positive vibe about it, i love the lyrics. They’re somehow what i needed now. Actually everything they’ve written about mfc is witty and perfect. And i don’t see the resemblance with gerard way but damn, they’re my two favorite artists in the world, so why not. ALSO TWO ALBUMS I’M HYPED
