@@meltdown3080 sis his name is literally Matthew. While yes, calling him Matthew feels weird, because I've always just known him as Matty, his name is still Matthew 😂
I feel like the elongated "thank you" really drives the point home. Like, the original is so quick about getting to the 'next!' part, but the thank you really sounds like "yo, I genuinely appreciated the time we had together. Seriously. Thanks, but it's time for you to go."
EJ Black months later and I’m here at 5am thinking about this comment lol this is SO (and I can’t stress this enough) true !! I always think the same while listening to it, I feel like you really got the whole point of the chorus and why he sings it that way!
Anyone who’s hating on this clearly doesn’t listen to R&B, Soul, or Gospel. This was a beautiful rendition of thank u next, despite Matty losing the sheet music. It’s not perfect, but not all live performances are. They did really well imo.
@møønlight. It's definitely not, sweetie. The original song has an r&b vibe, and this version with the chord progressions, arrangement and back-up singers gives it a gospel flavor. However, the 1975's original music is usually classified as indie and alternative. So.......duuuuuhhhh. LMAO
Him losing track of the song, skimming thru the sheet music, the other singet singing his part for him and him thanking the singer just made this performance better hahaha
this was a VERY the 1975 type cover. y’all obviously don’t listen to them if u think this is bad edit: y’all in the comments saying “ummm no??? u can like the band and not like the cover” this comment wasn’t for you!! i was speaking on those who disliked it becuase they were expecting it to be a pop-cover in a similar style of ariana’s.
Immaburntcookie25 sooo, relatable? There’s already a word for it. Guess you gotta make that new lingo though, don’t wanna use words and idioms that already exist, that’s so lame... I mean it’s a... total genocide? 🤔 am I doing this right!?
Omfg that was so amazing the way he really took it out of the box like far out and innovated it into something completely different, I’m lost for words
I think the choir being loud was completely intentional, so it would have this more mechanical sound to it, and it could kinda "interrupt" Matt like in many of their new songs
I love this performance, and have watched it so many times. Absolutely amazing to see musicians using unspoken musical vocabulary onstage (you NEVER see this at pop performances) like him directing/cutting off the backing vocalists, asking for help from one of the singers when he lost his place, doing the "one more time" hand gesture, etc. It's beautiful and refreshing in its rawness. THANK U
I only listen to a few songs from 1975 but I love the fact that he gave that moment to his back up singer. Like he acknowledged those people that are usual just seen as back ground
Matty dropping his papers is a representation of my life everything is falling apart and i am just pretending everything thing is fine not a problem in the world😂❤
Use earphones/headphones everyone! The mix isn't what it seems when you're on your speakerphone. And the voicing in this is not the regular triads (1st, 3rd, 5th) that you always hear on pop songs, that's why to some it might sound horrendous when its arrangement is actually ravishing.
i love the fact that the 1975 doesn't just do a cover, they make a whole different song, one with a whole different vibe that allows us to take away so much more. that's just amazing. wow, just listen to that.
1:40 when the teacher suddenly call you up for the presentation in front of the class and you didn't prepare at all and 2:20 when you firgure it out ,put it in right order and become overconfident
They made this song sound so much sweeter and more heartfelt. The original was those things too, I love the original - but something about the chorus being backed by multiple voices and the way they made the notes longer - it makes this song so dreamy and soft. What a beautiful cover.
Matthew Jeffrey 3:30 the one singing the +4th is way off and belting out louder than Matt. The problem was more in the mixing, but the choir doesn’t have license to overplay their hand
Fpk Hk416 it’s clear to me that he’s intentionally singing quietly while he has them belt in that moment. i don’t see your point. it sounds really good. as for her being off, i guess i just don’t hear it. sounds good to me
Man, when you have Matty you don't need a choir or backup singers at all. I mean, I could listen to his angelic voice alone and it would be the most amazing shit ever. Thank u, next.
Y’all complaining that this wasn’t very 1975 but I’m here to say it was. Clearly y’all never heard of Mine, I Couldn’t Be More In Love, fallingforyou and SINCERITY IS SCARY. Those songs had very strong gospel, soul and R&B vibes to it
I'd be honored if some 1975 fans who appreciate 80s/90s classics would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of PURPLE RAIN by Prince and PRAYING FOR TIME by George Michael on my channel in tribute to 2 of the greatest vocalist-songwriters in music history. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and RESPECT to the legends of both yesterday and today.

I appreciate that he kept the lyrics of the first verse the same. Guys usually end up changing it but I think it's kind of essential to the meaning of the song.
I think people dislike the choir because they are badly mixed into the performance. Their mix is too dry which makes them spike into Healy's singing. But I loved that they had a choir as well! Lovely addition
Christina Spencer yeah that would be the mixing. I kinda liked it too but I’d love a more clear mix where I can hear everyone better. Beautiful voices all around
