The Remains of the Day is one of my all-time faves, such a wonderful book.

Oh it’s so good! The slow subtleties under the surface of that book are incredible!

Cat’s Eye is one of my favorite books. I’ve read it multiple times over my life and love how my perceptions have changed about it over time, much like the main character.

Yes! I can totally see that! Atwood really writes so well about the inner lives of people!

John Banville The Book of Evidence is sitting on my shelf for years. I started it once and then got distracted by a new book. It was on my TBR for #irishreadathon again this year but remains unread!!! Your two years younger than my son, so you’re a youngster to me. ❤

Yes! It must be very different knowing that it’s based on someone who was real and around the city!

I laugh. - you are younger than my children. That was an excellent year for the booker, especially Restoration. I loved that book. The weirder the better for me!

Aha, yes! And I can totally see why people love it!

Everybody else is talking about the new Women's Prize shortlist today, and here you are with 35 year old Booker shortlist 😂 The Remains of the Day is the only book I've read from this list. I didn't even realise Rose Tremain had been writing that long. I haven't read anything by her (yet) but I somehow had the notion that she was more recent.

Aha yes! I hadn’t realised when I scheduled it that it would go out at exactly the same time! If I’d realised and was at home, I would have just done a live reaction to it 😂

Happy belated birthday! If it helps, I'm a touch older than you. But anyway, I loved The Remains of the Day.

Thank you! And apologies for the belated reply! Oh, Remains of the Day is so good!

Happy belated birthday Mr. Bob! My first child was also born in 1989. Hooray for "Remains of the Day"--I loved this one. I found the butler so quirky. With his characteristics, do you think he had Asperger's?

Thank you so much! Oh interesting, I hadn’t thought of that for him! Perhaps, but I read it mostly as a circumstance of his profession and its reliance on unquestioning loyalty.

Ah 1989. A good year. I got married, bought a house in Brighton and read four of the Booker shortlist: Restoration, Cat's Eye, The Book of Evidence and Remains of the Day. I think I enjoyed Restoration rather more than you.

I think sometimes very strong authors are put on shortlists again and again (and in the end they are finally winning, but for a book that is just meh). That might be one of the reasons why Atwood once ended up on this shortlist too. And why she did win the Women's Prize for The Testaments.

Aha, yes! Sometimes I think the buzz around big authors makes you read their books more favourably (I am very guilty of this at times). And we don’t talk about that win for The Testaments- in my mind, it never happened 😂
