I asked the Elder at my congregation about the unfulfilled prophecies of the 70's and he said something about new light and i was instantly convinced it was all BS.
I was in kindergarten in this year. I can recall asking my dad about 2 years later if my parents were saving money to send me to college. My father quite frankly stated that, "The new system will be here before you graduate highschool. So there is no need to even consider it." Here I am with 2 children and 15 years past high school... I have never forgotten that conversation. This explains his beliefs. I will be saving for my children. I have no good reason to believe the idea has no merit for consideration.
Happy Idiot i feel you, very similar situation in my case my parents wouldn't sent to school just because why, the end is coming and so i started working with my dad since i was 11 years old, i didn't experience what would have been going to middle school and high school, it's so stupid because now I've asked them why why why...And they just say sorry that's what we were taught in the congregation, it's f.... I am grateful for my love of truth, I feel that my parents cultivated that in me. I do not despise them for what they taught me. My father's words to me that day when I was 7 years old meant more then he probably even knew. A secular education is a worldly pursuit. In reality you end up with children with no applicable experience or skills for entering the work force. The affect is they can't afford to leave their parents homes or build their own familys.

The internet forgets nothing. There is an unending list of people and organizations that have tried and failed to make things disappear on the internet. First of all, people take screenshots of juicy things, and 2: There are archives.
I remember this Watchtower screw up vividly. Most of my congregation did not take it seriously, after all 'no one knows the day or the hour'. But one elder's wife jumped on it and started telling everyone, congregation members and householders, Armageddon was coming in the 20th century. When it came time for the congregation Watchtower study, she raised her hand and the oblivious brother conducting it called on her. Most of us were cringing as she proclaimed the end was coming in no more than 10 years. I believe the other elders asked her husband to 'put her in her place' as she never spoke of it again. So glad I got out shortly thereafter.

Rational arguments really are comforting after a lifetime of apocalyptic predictions and false dichotomies. A lot of abuse occurs within this organisation, but I would argue that the belief structure itself is also traumatic and, ultimately, abusive. So consistent, rational rebuttal isn't just important as a method of wake-up; it's genuinely therapeutic for those who are 'awake', but are still coming to terms with the trauma caused by what they once believed.
That was the idea I grew up with! We would never see 2000. I had already faded by then and was still freaked out on New Year's Even 1999. I remember being very young, like 9 or 10 years old, and my oldest brother said "don't worry about turning 30. Armageddon will be here before then!" Ha! I can laugh now!!! but back then, it was terrifying!
be thankful that religious fundamentalism is so mindlessly direct and literal in its delusions... that helps a lot when sceptical minded people want to break out of the boounds of false stories and ridiculous claims. The sneaky ones, that only speak in fuzzy terms, those are hard to get around.
Oh man, I remember this one... I remember the very study where we covered this article... And when we did the paragraph you're referring to, I leaned toward a friend of mine and whispered "I wish they (the writers) wouldn't do that (make predictions of this nature)." And he, a regular pioneer and ministerial servant sort of nodded and said "Yeah, I know," in agreement. I also wish I still had that issue ... But it probably went into the landfill with the rest of my Watchtower library about 20 years ago. No regrets!

I clearly remember this magazine and discussing it with some fellow pioneers and brushing it up as a typo. AND I remember looking it up in the bond volume and noticing the “correction”.

Just before I joined but fits the pattern of deceit. The biggest thing that was being trumpeted during my short time involved was the "this generation" passage. Most witnesses I knew clung to this as their main indicator of when the end would come . How they got away with moving the goalposts on this is beyond parody.

I just saw this video, but man, brought back memories of an assembly I attended in 1989 where one of the speakers said something to the effect of, "the time is short, surely we can expect the end of this wicked system to come before the new millennium", and the attending witnesses, including my family, lost their collective minds with excitement. Now, however, my family denies that anything of the sort was ever said. Thank you for finding essentially proof of this in writing Lloyd!
They do this to a lot of their material actually. This would be a great subject to cover in detail. I remember there was several revisions in the Bible Teach book like this. One was where there was a pic of a candle having had the flame put out. It was there to illustrate how when we die we go nowhere amd cease to exist, but the original had smoke coming off of it and lots of people that studied it commented that that smoke was like our soul leaving the body lol. The wt took the smoke out of the pic, covertly, of course.

My mom said the same. Then it would end before I graduated from college. Then it would end before I found a wife. Then it was before I had kids. Then it was before those kids were grown. I am glad to have escaped the drudgery and fear mongering, though with my battle scars still intact years later like the majority of the XJW community.
I think the point is someone at Watchtower realized they shouldnt have said the line about 20th century. So it was changed later that year when the bound volume was produced.
Even though you making a good point remember that they claim they write their articles (watchtower and awake magazines) with the help of the holy ghost or spirit directed organization so they supposed to make zero mistakes
I sure remember 1989. I was a senior in high school, a very good student in advanced classes, in fact i had enough credits to get my regents diploma by 10th grade, and all my guidance counselors were upset that i was eschewing college because i was cocksure that armageddon would come soon, and all i needed to do was get a job to "ride out this system of things." Wasnt until i finally decided watchtower was full of crap until i took a career seriously. And, can someone really still call 31 years later "our day?" Pretty cool that you got the original 'Tower. Ive known about this dishonest revision for a long time but to have the hard copy is sweet.
The Watchtower Society was famous for "EDITING" previous articles. I remember in the late 70's they started replacing some of the existing Watchtower and Awake! bound volumes and came out with what they called at the time, "COMPREHENSIVE VERSIONS" of the Bound Volumes. I remember looking at the arrivals at the Kingdom Hall library and thinking, "my, there's a lot that's been removed from what was originally printed"... Word to the wise: Keep your original magazines because you don't know how they'll be edited once they go to the bound volume...🤔...
I pointed the exact sentence out to an elder at the time...he hadn’t seen it yet so I showed him from my mag.....he just pulled a face, shrugged his shoulders and fobbed me off. When I showed it to others nobody could not see the millstone I was showing them. It would be same today....just like every other false utterance... oh, that was back then.
In the current WATCHTOWER ONLINE LIBRARY, you can read the same article (Jan 01, 1989) in other languages. WT didn't make a cover-up in Japanese edition - it still reads "この二十世紀に完了するであろう業の基礎"~ "the foundation of the work to be completed in this 20th century" while French edition has altered expression "...... à notre époque". Greek edition is also unaltered: "... στον 20ό μας αιώνα".

Before I even watched this when I saw 1989, memories were automatically triggered. At the global assembly that year, I'll never forget, the organization proclaimed that the end would surely come before the year 2000, and it was all anyone could talk about for like the rest of that month, and now my family denies that ever happened.... of course they do. I remember it clearly because it was such a big deal. No surprising that they would try everything to hide even suggesting that.
Some years ago at a meeting there was an article about how close we were. The defining point was no more time for a new president, we were that close, Obama was president at that time and the elections were growing ever closer, well, we have trump, that was a few years back. I wish I new when to record or keep magazines cause I throw them away, I see now I should have kept them,at one time I had the really older books from the late fifties from my mom and they were covered in idols, sun gods , and all strange things o couldn’t understand I was too young. I sure wish I kept them, I ran away from home and never went back till two years ago after my stroke, but gee wiz, now I research and find out all the dirty secrets, I’m not getting g along with the elders or my sisters cause I told them a few things and they lost a few screws
Omg 1989, the year I got married to a JW brother, under a dark cloud of guilt and embarrassment caused by me to my family.... All because I was pregnant before marriage. I married a brother who on the surface was upright but in private he was violent and controlling. Luckily I got the strength 9 years later to leave with my two children. So much happened, I'm enjoying a simple life now, what a difference, so glad!!

They cleverly dangle the "paradise" & "armagedon" like a carrot before a horse. Some have spent their entire lives in the JW's believing they would see "the end" but it never comes.
Wow! I have the Spanish version of the bound volume and it says "siglo XX" meaning 20th century. This same quote was said in the book Revelation and It's Grand Climax... 1988 edition it says 20th century wich i have but on the 2006 edition it says in our days also I have it says "in our days". From English to Spanish it's amazing sometimes what is published.

Thanks for showing proof that with the bound volumes, they edited stuff out! That's why I couldn't find the picture of the 4 Horsmen of the Apocalypse crashing though the 1975 calendar although I knew I had seen it. Well done!
I've always had an interest in space and it was always something I kept to myself IN FEAR of my parents reaction since the scientific proof is inevitable. They never saved money for me to go to school past high school and never encouraged me to ACTUALLY follow my own dreams since their idea of what my "dreams" were, were all based on Jehovah and the religion.
I was in the Canyon Country Congregation, north of Los Angeles California< then in 1989 and I remember when we studied the article. The watchtower conductor, last name Nichols, actually said, "so brothers, we will be in paradise within 11 years." I was not very strong in the "truth, I mean faith, then, and so I questioned an elder friend, last name Sherman, what he thought that statement meant. He said "well it means "SOMETHING" And so it did. It meant the boys in Brooklyn didn't know what they were talking about. LOL But I don't remember anyone really taking that sentence very seriously. Too bad the same couldn't be said for the rest of their crazy doctrine. Oh yeah. I'm not a JW anymore.
I remember reading/hearing that the best selling book in America in 1988 was something like "88 reasons why the second coming will be in 1988." I guess the watchtower was hoping to ride the tide?
