The 1st Samnite War is an event shrouded in the mists of history. Only really discussed by Livy, it is an event where we are forced to rely on a single source for much of our information. Yet, it is also a defining moment in the history of the young Republic. The Samnite Wars would be transformative events in the course of Roman history, along the course of these three great wars the Roman state would transform from an Italian power into a Mediterranean power. Today, we are going to take a look at Livy's account of the events leading up to the 1st Samnite War. Livy paints a story of great Roman valor and depicts Rome as a savior of a people who were about to consumed by the ravenous Samnite state. But is there any truth to Livy's account? Were the Romans really jumping in to save an ally? Or did Rome actually commit a dishonorable act and attack the Samnites despite being in a treaty of friendship? Let's talk about it.
