Yes Josh but you forgot to consider that I need to buy a pan, a pot, a spoon, a stove, a house, the food that gives me the energy to make the chicken, and I need to pay my taxes which ACTUALLY brings this meal to $253,678

Its understandable that we will buy a 5lb bag of flour and not go through it all, but other things like raw chicken we might not have on hand especially because it can spoil. @@kuronverz2793 ok cabbage lasts like a month in the fridge. I went on vacation for a month in January and there was my half a head of cabbage in February still usable. Left over chicken goes in the freezer. I also didn't like the cost of oil being left out since it's integral to the dish. I agree that it's hard to buy everything for a meal like this but that's what cooking is. You buy larger amounts of ingredients so you have those ingredients on hand to make other things. As a cook I'd maybe make a stir fry with the left over cabbage and chicken. I might bake something using the flour. I don't know what I'd do with the oil besides do another batch of fries but I wouldn't do deep frying of anything. I just watch JW do it:))
@Jolene8
@Jolene8 2 года назад
@@kuronverz2793 I'm guessing this is meant for a family of 4. There will be little left over if you all enjoy this meal... If you are a single person or a pair, you can definitely use leftover veg and meat for other meals if you are an adventurous cook. No waste. If you don't want to use much oil, you can always change the method of cooking. Air fry or oven fry, which is similar and uses considerably less oil. There's always going to be a small cost with the usage of oil and prep/cook time. Not much though if you prep well.

It uses just shredded cabbage mixed with lemon juice/white vinegar, salt, pepper and olive oil, maybe also add a little bit of shredded carrot for taste and colour. Some people add dill too but I don't like it. Also the japanese way is very similar just replace olive oil with sesame oil. People are asking questions about the spice mix and rub at 1:10. The brand name is FIESTA. Might not be available across the country. Stores near me sell it, and I like their Mexican oregano. I've never bought their chicken rub but I will give it a go soon. The Walmart up the street carries the whole Fiesta line of spices. The ingredients from the label: Salt, Monosodium Glutamate, Spices, Paprika, Garlic, Onion, Rice Flour, Sugar, Butter Flavor [(Corn Starch, Modified Tapioca Starch, Dextrose, Gum Arabic, Artificial Flavor, and Silicon Dioxide (Free Flow Agent)], Lemon Oil, Silicon Dioxide (Free Flow Agent), and Citral.

Yess, a lot of chefs don't add spices to the buttermilk or the dredge, *this* is how you make proper fried chicken! But I think it's important to factor in the cost of cooking oil as well, as you won't be able to re-use this oil much.

@FNPivvot
@FNPivvot 2 года назад
@@obuw1 That only brings the total per serving to around $2.75. Sure, that's nearly 33% percent more expensive, but the meal costing $3 per serving is still pretty cheap considering restaurants will charge $7+ for a similar meal.
@sebaschan-uwu
@sebaschan-uwu День назад
@@obuw1I deep fry stuff in my wok and I only need around 2 cups for stuff like this, 3 for large pieces of chicken thighs. If you use a round bottom vessel you need significantly less oil than a dutch oven which most people seem to use for deep frying. Also filter out the oil and keep it in a jar to reuse it for next time. If you don't filter it the grossness will compound and ruin the oil after two cooks.

Love the video Papa!! Was the vegetable oil for frying included in the overall cost? I know that it's a "pantry staple," but I feel like a lot of folks only have one bottle of oil at home at a time (unless one stocks up/purchases the gallon sized jugs.) Anytime I plan to fry anything at home I normally need to buy another thing of oil in advance to have enough for my heavy bottom pot.

Man, I always love your videos, and I've learned so much from your recipes. But I gotta acknowledge the disconnect. Where I live, four boneless, skinless chicken breasts will run you up around 15-18 dollars CAD, about 11.78- 14.14 US. 6.45 for four chicken breasts is ridiculously cheap where I'm from.
@huntershonour2433
@huntershonour2433 2 года назад
I feel you. Instead of 4 boneless chicken breasts for 8 servings you can get just 1 instead and enjoy it for yourself. But it will get a bit more expensive if you don't have mayo and ketchup already for the sauce. You probably should make your own seasoning instead too.

Actual price breakdown: ~1.3 lbs of chicken breast @3.49/lb. = $4.53 Chicken seasoning = $2.97 One pint buttermilk = $2.35 Kosher salt = ~$0.20 3 cups AP flour = ~$0.61 3 qt. vegetable oil (2x48 oz. containers) = $6.52 52 g mayo = $0.16 1 bunch green onions = $0.79 1 lemon = $0.66 1 garlic bulb = $0.67 1 head of cabbage = $2.04 105 g mayo = $0.32 (observe that he said both 52g and 105g of mayo cost the same price) 90g ketchup = $0.35 1 small bottle Cholula = $3.18 (this simply is not a staple) 10g Worcestershire sauce = $0.05 5 Russet potatoes = $4.00 7g Paprika = $0.20 Total = $29.60 For four servings, we are at $7.40 per person. We are not even in the realm of $1.78. His price breakdown is complete bullshit--massively understating actually available prices, and counting as staples things that should not be considered staples. The above (true) cost significantly exceeds Josh's $4.95 "buy everything" estimate, which would be even more dramatically on the low side of reality if he suggested that each of the staples (salt, pepper, flour, mayo, ketchup, worcestershire, paprika) were purchased separately. That would drive the realistic cost closer to $10 per person. Josh massively lies in every one of these videos, and what is shocking is that this is the video of his I've seen that is the closest to reality--being off by only a factor of about 4. Many of his "but cheaper" videos are off by closer to a factor of 10. It's infuriating to see him perpetrate this fraud, over and over and over, for clicks. He's a truly shameless creator who, very long ago, stopped making cooking and baking videos and started making, well, whatever this is. Papa no like.

The only issue I ever have is the per serving cost calculations. While I get the "you still have the bag of flour" argument, that doesn't change what the grocery bill looks like when you have to buy whole units up front. This is actually a really solid one for me because you might actually HAVE the majority of these ingredients in your pantry so the up front costs aren't astronomical, but that isn't true of many of the But Cheaper series. There's also the problem of spoilage- There's none here really, but in other But Cheaper you have to buy a bunch of something and only use a small amount of it, Josh calculates that as something ridiculous like .13c per serving, and then the rest is probably going to spoil because it's not like flour in that it can sit for a long time and it isn't a common ingredient like eggs where you can just use it elsewhere. I checked out the price breakdown and some things just aren't making sense to me. Checked in my local store (I live VERY close to Josh, same state and I think same city.): (ALL in USD) Assume you have: Spices, Ketchup, hot sauce, WS sauce, Mayo (I don't but let's give him the benefit of the doubt here) 4 chicken breasts (Store brand) - 11.92 2 cups (473ml) buttermilk - 1.00 3 cups (450g) all-purpose flour - .95 2 quarts (2L) vegetable oil - 6.96 2 green onions - .44 1 lemon - .64 4 cloves garlic - .62 1/2 head green cabbage - 1.57 5 medium russet potatoes - 3.85 = 27.94 For his, he somehow got 13.58 for all the same items and he never accounted for the 2 liters of veg oil you have to buy to fry all this in. So my costs will be AT LEAST twice per serving what his are, and as it happens I don't have mayo handy so it'll actually be higher. TLDR I wanna know where he's finding 4 chicken breasts, of any quality for 5.09. Because it isn't Austin Texas in March 2022.
@octo448
@octo448 2 года назад
To be clear, I actually still this is is a really sold inexpensive recipe, but the per serving and even his wholesale costs just aren't accurate and they're deliberately misleading IMO. Saying "Here's how you make great food for a decent price" is totally fine. Shaming people who still can't afford it because he's fibbing or twisting prices (or just happens to know where to get stuff at half the cost I can find in his same locale, lucky him). And that's to say nothing of people who work full time and for whom the labor cost of making their own food is also something to be considered. This is a discussion about class and privilege, not a diss on Josh's (probably really, really tasty) food.

Jist made this, my notes: Definantly let the chicken marinade overnight. Likecits not even an option, the skin taste good but the meat taste like oil with a 20 minute soak 2: yuor ginna wanna double the dredge at least. Bear in mind with the fries dresge that youll want double the dresge mixture for the batter (it was very watery and soupy) 3: count HOW MANY BOWLS youll need. Its alot 4. After starting from scratch, makin all the dredges and marinades and cutting potatoe matchsticks, eqting, loading dishwasher, soaking what dosent dit, and cleaning the counters, its about 3 hrs . This is with difficulty of having to remake dredges due to running out , (which was alot of lost time) i probably won't do this again myself
