In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves chats with Jack Carr about the pistols and holsters that Jack - a former Navy SEAL and a New York Times best-selling author - carries on a day to day basis. And note that these two carry nerds are filming this video from Clint and Heidi Smith's house on Thunder Ranch! You may be surprised by Jack's two picks. Hint: They are both from the same company. (And as usual, this is not a sponsored video - i.e., these are the guns Jack really carries every day, not what we got paid to tell you he carries every day). We also talk books, podcasts, and social media. Check it out.

Quick summary: smaller SIG P365 more often than larger SIG P320 is what Jack Carr carried. (P365 is considered a micro-compact, P320 a compact.) P365 with factory iron sights, P320 with factory Romeo red dot sight. Also uses the 12 round medium extended magazine in the P365, as opposed to the shorter 10 round or taller 15 round. Said the 12 round fit his hands better. In a 4 o'clock IWB "Mini-wing" holster by Blackpoint Tactical.

I've already gone through the 3 audio books and have enjoyed the plots overall. I wish Carr would do a little more fleshing out of the characters and the transitions in each story. Sometimes it seems like he's in a hurry to get to the action sequences and doesn't provide a large amount of the in-between details and exposition.

You like when someone tucks you in at night too? 🤣 Jokes aside I get it, I just don't find the time to pick up a book like I used to. I used to read on the bus before school or when I was waiting in between classes but now I feel I almost always doing something and if I am not then I am trying to catch up on a show that I want to watch. So I tend to listen to audiobooks when I am in the car or at work. I am on the second Game of Thrones book, and I know there is a bunch of stuff I need to listen to now. It's always a nice alternative to listening to the same songs you have heard before, even if some songs never get played out.

I’m a former Navy Seabee and I carry a S&W .38 revolver, a Walther PPS .40 caliber, and a Ruger LCP Max .380 ACP and the reason I carry these guns is because I feel comfortable with each one and I’m really good at shooting all three of them. You don’t have to be a navy seal to carry what jack is carrying. You need to carry what feels right for you and train as much as you can with the weapon you’re going to carrying.

I have to admit that I have shot a Glock, Sig Sauer, CZ, FNH, and Beretta and they all shoot about the same in regards to accuracy and reliability. I recently shot a Glock 22 Gen 4 in 40 S&W and it ran flawlessly and very precise. I come to the conclusion that it’s more about the Indian than the arrow. I also noticed that there is no perceived difference between the Ruger and S&W revolvers. In short there are a lot of great pistols out there.

I'm sure you've heard many on RU-vid say we live in the golden age of handguns. So many to choose from.. The upside is - the right gun(s) for YOU is out there. Go to the range, try them out. I expect some will be eliminated fast. I happen to be a Sig guy as well. Tried many and its what I return to. I still have Glocks. Still have Berettas. CZ is great for competition. But I trust Sig. It just works for me. And, whenever I've had a little problem, say a feed ramp problems on my wife's P238, I sent it to Sig and they fixed it for no charge. I take care of my Sigs, and Sig takes care of me. Buy what you like. If you like, you'll hopefully practice and enjoy the experience. Then when you need it, you'll be ready.
@Quality_Guru
@Quality_Guru 3 года назад
@@rdm1000 Good Perspective. I own two Sig Pistols with zero issues. Looking to get another one soon. As for testing out a pistol prior to purchase, for me and most gun owners that is a little difficult to do. The vast majority of gun ranges have plenty of Glock and Smith Wesson pistols to rent with some sprinkles of old school H&K and CZ pistols as well. I heard it over and over again; "test a pistol at the range prior to buying it". Good in practice, but it does not relate to reality. In my area none of the gun ranges offer any newer pistols to rent; just the old stuff.
@rdm1000
@rdm1000 3 года назад
@@Quality_Guru QG - I feel your pain. I live behind the iron curtain in California. So I cannot even look at most of the guns out there with thoughts of buying. Because I travel to the South often and have friends who are gun guys, at least I've been able to play with all the wonderful handguns- and dream of the day I live in a free State, and if I'm lucky, there will still be such a thing as a free State as far as 2A is concerned, by the time I move. My range is probably like your range. The choice is limited. I've seen better choices at ranges in Tennessee and other places, but I agree, unless the FFL has an attached range and will let you test fire, there will be some faith involved. Maybe it's because I've been shooting for 50 years, or perhaps it is a bit of self-delusion, but once I've bought a gun, I've never been sorry with any handgun purchase. Getting a new gun is always a thrill, so inevitably I'm happy. This is what we need to do. Start our own RU-vid channel reviewing guns, like the guy in the shorts, and all the gun companies will send them to us for testing and review. Problem solved. And think of the fun.

Carried a Glock 30 (with a Glock 21 mag and X-Grip sleeve) and over time just got tired of feeling like I had a cinder block on my belt. As a devout .45AARP guy, it was almost painful going to 9mm. The Sig P365 had just came out and drew my interest, thankfully they hadn't made the 12rd mag yet because the 10rd mag, even with the pinky extender didn't feel right in my hand so I avoided all the "foibles" Sig had early on with the P365. Now I run the P365 with 12rd mag and the Foxtrot 365 light in a CrossBreed LDS 2.0 holster and I've never been happier about changing my mind.

Great video! For me, it's the 229. I really like the DA/SA trigger especially in a stressful situation where I have to pull my pistol. Having that first shot in a DA is, or could be a life saver! Then, of course, all shots after the first is SA. I personally trust the hammer fired pistols more than the strikers. I just like seeing the position of that hammer. What you carry should be a personal choice not influenced by anyone, and what you carry should be the pistol you shoot best. After seeing this, I look forward to picking up Jacks first book and follow the character throughout the rest of the series. SEMPER FI!!
@Crazt
@Crazt Год назад
For me, the idea of carrying a loaded spring with just a little piece of metal holding it back weirds me out. I love the feel of shooting the p365, but I don't even like the idea of a striker with a safety; the spring is still looking for a reason to let go. Maybe it's the fact the M9 SI was my first pistol, but the extra safety of knowing nothing will cause that firing pin to accidentally go off makes me feel comfortable. I really wish more companies would make a DA/SA subcompact.
@westontennyson8520
@westontennyson8520 11 месяцев назад
@@CraztI agree completely regarding DA, people usually focus on the heavy first round trigger pull as a safety, and completely neglect to mention the inherent mechanical safety advantage compared to striker or SA guns that are under spring tension and biased toward going bang.

So interesting for me to see all of this. I'm 60 years old, an Army vet, and grew up on .45 acp's colt mostly, but almost exclusively for years during the 70s and 80s after I was 21 and got my ccw I used either a model 19 s &w or a model 13 from smith. I used to work at kne of the largest firearms retail stores in the US at that time with an indoor range and I shot a lot of revolvers and pistols. I also hunted a lot and even used my model 13 to hunt groundhogs. I've shot them past a 100 yards standing up with a good rest and single action. I've also shot fox and coyotes and hunted lots with ling range varmint rifles, etc. I am sure that it matters what handgun you use, but I believe much more important is that you can put the bullets in the boiler room. A miss with a 44 mag is much worse than a hit with a .22. Many people, especially men think they were born with a gun in their hand, or care too much about equipment versus being aware, and avoiding getting into a situation where you need self defense. The best self defense is using your brain. If you make it hard for bad guys, they will try to rob someone easier. Otherwise they would be doing something legal that adds value to society. Again, it's important to have good equipment, but being smart is really important. Good show. I loved the shotgun videos. Especially the maverick 88 vid, etc. I'm currently looking for a home protection gun that will work within my physical limitations. Bad arthritis, and bad heart. I'm leaning toward the smith ex rack 9mm, but also looking at the Taurus judge, etc. Thanks for sharing these great videos. I really appreciate it. Good stuff. Best regards from the heartland. Southern Indiana USA. Tim.

07:10 . . .I find that MOST military guys follow the KISS method for weapons. We may have something a bit crazy here or there, but for the most part our carry weapons are not tricked out and, especially when chatting with my Marine Corp buds, even their home defense weapons are simple: Optic, White Light, and some ergos . . .maybe a mag coupler? But see that adds weight and a lot of us understand you're PROBABLY not gonna be dumping 30 rounds in a 3AM gun fight at Casa De Jarhead.

Somehow I managed to figure out that I like carrying a p365 without becoming a SEAL first. 🏆 Aside from the small size and elegant engineering (modular fire control group just pops out for easy cleaning), this gun will eat and poop out anything, factory or handloads, without any hiccups. Plus I shoot it pretty well for a small gun.

I've read all three of his books and can highly recommend them for anyone who enjoys the thriller genre. It's fun how he weaves very detailed points on various weapons and systems into the story. Looking forward to the 4th book!!

I think that from a tactician perspective his choices make sense. Concealed carry is about covertly equipping yourself for the worst case scenario in a way that you are not advertising that you came prepared. That was the premise behind the 365 development; having ample firepower in the most discrete package possible without sacrificing shootability. It is awesome to hear perspectives from people that are not simply fanboys, trend followers, or paid promoters.

Will buy his book. It’s infuriating to read other authors who know nothing about guns. Reading another author who calls magazines clips, who repeatedly talks about switching the safely off of a “Glock” and then gets the calibers and model numbers wrong. It’s hard to get into the story when so much is wrong. It makes you wonder what else they got wrong in the story. 😞

I love Ray Porter, but I haven't read or listened to your novels. I'll get on that task right now! Great video & conversation. I just bought a 365x today after thinking about it since it hit the market, comparing it to other pistols, holding it in stores, and finally firing a rental 365x Romeo Zero at the range this afternoon. I was shocked, truly surprised at how accurate, comfortable, and concealable it is! Usually gun rentals are a little worse for wear, maybe their sights are off, or the triggers are too tight or loose, etc. But the 365x rental had none of those issues-- well, the red dot was 2" high, but two rounds told me how much to adjust. After those first two sighting rounds, I was able to put the next 98 rounds in the center of the target with ~1" to ~3.5" groups from 15' all the way out to 50'. It's a great, scrappy, tough little pistol. Recoil feels light to me, the trigger pull is smooth and breaks well, and I was able to reacquire very quickly after every shot. But the thing that sold me is the accuracy of the 365x with a 3.1" barrel! I'm not a marksman by any stretch of the imagination. I'm an average civilian shooter. I go to the range every 4 to 6 weeks to fire a couple hundred rounds from each of my handguns, clean them when I get home, and then lock them up until my next range day. The point of that last paragraph is that shooting the 365x made me *feel* like a marksman! I didn't shoot as consistently on point with a couple handguns I've owned for years as I did with a rental unit of a model I'd never fired before. Consequently, I walked out of the shop with a brand new one. 👍
