Hey Whatsup Guys OSG here with another Commodore 64 software house video and this time its the awesome Epyx.
When you think of sports games on the C64 there is one software house that immediately springs to mind and that is Epyx….but they did do other genres too. There are a couple of games in here that I wouldn’t normally include as they are licenced games but they have name differences and slight code changes so they are in as they are what my American followers will know the games as.
Anyway Epyx released 60 games for the C64 so I’ve looked through them and this is what I would say are the 20 best Commodore 64 Epyx games in order of greatness
Games in this video :-
Impossible Mission 2 @ 00:43
G.I. Joe @ 01:20
Destroyer @ 01:50
Chip's Challenge @ 02:25
Jumpman Junior @ 02:59
Gateway to Apshai @ 03:33
Death Sword @ 04:08
The Sword of Fargoal @ 04:43
Super Cycle @ 05:18
Temple of Apshai Trilogy @ 05:53
The Legend of Blacksilver @ 06:24
Pitstop II @ 07:01
Jumpman @ 07:38
World Games @ 08:15
Summer Games @ 08:45
California Games @ 09:22
Summer Games 2 @ 09:58
World Karate Championship @ 10:35
Impossible Mission @ 11:11
Winter Games @ 11:48

I just love these videos, I think it's impossible to try and explain to younger ones just how amazing the commodore/C64 was and what an impact this computer was and how it set the bench mark of games & gaming particularly in the 8bit market and the only way I think you can sort of compare it to the rest like Atari spectrum and a like is that this system was like a Neo Geo AES of its day lol I absolutely loved and still love Pit stop 2 never mind you Colin McRae rally or Forza because pit stop 2 is where all that started and yes I think it was the first ever game where you could Change tyres and refuel which was a massive big deal back then bringing the game to life not to mention the whole point of competitive game play lol I remember my mate loading up winter sports for the first time I think I might of only have turned 14 in the November and being absolutely blown away and in ore of the beautiful colourful graphics lol The Commodore 64 deserves so much respect it changed lives and made life a lot more exciting especially when back then there was only 3 TV channels and they used to switch off at midnight lol I'm still playing the C64 in 2020 👌👍

I would have placed The Apshai game and Legend of Blacksilver somewhere higher up the list, but other I would agree with the majority of the list - didn't know that Barbarian was renamed State-side (down in Oz, we used the UK/European titles too) - I heard back in my school days that Death Sword was a spin-off/clone, rather than a simple renaming 😅 Also - one minor point: "Apshai" is pronounced something closer to "APP-shy" or "APP-sigh"; it's from "Apshai/Apshait", the name of a gigantic corpse-eating dung beetle that was said to have dwelt in the Eqyptian Underworld at one point....sorry, but my right eye was twitching something *fierce* whenever you referenced the title.. 😉😅

Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy best Spectrum games of that genre. Though Attic Attack and Sabre Wolf where also pretty great. Elite was by far the best 8 bit game ever, released on the BBC Micro. Acornsofts prior arcade ripoffs where very good too. Hmm... one of my mates had an Apple ][ and it was Lode Runner that was my favourite game on that. But most '80s UK teens had BBC, C64 or Spectrum. Impossible Mission - I never cared for this one, mainly because I never knew how to play it properly. What I mean is that the platforms were confusing as to where you could go, I didn't know how to record and use the musical sequences and it was said that there were duplicates, but I'm not very musically inclined, so asking me to do anything with music is a recipe for failure. Destroyer - The segment shown in the video isn't fully representative of the full game as it does have action sequences, like shooting down planes. Although I thought they could have come up with a better system of switching stations than typing in two-letter codes. I suppose they saw that as a form of copy protection.

@@MarvelousLXVII so it's the spinoff, of a spinoff, of Questron... like that's not confusing enough.... 😅
@MarvelousLXVII

@@cthulhusmop Lets get even more confused. Questron had to get a license from Richard Garriott (Lord British) because their game looked a lot like Ultima so Questron could be considered a spinoff of Ultima.

i always thought those joystick waggle sports games were some of the worse games ever made, they were no fun then and are not playable today.. Winter games has that event where you have to waggle for about 4 screens then shoot some targets and then waggle again for 4 screens and it becomes really repetitive. Throw them all away. lol

Epyx got publishing contracts for several European games, and Epyx used US Gold to publish their games in Europe. Epyx was a publisher, but to keep a steady flow of games coming in, Epyx merged with Starpath. Most of their internal games were developed by ex-Starpath employees, including the sports games.

System 3 published the game in Europe, but they got Epyx to publish the American version. It's a surprise Epyx got sued, not System 3 for copyright infringement by Data East over the similarities in Karate Champ.
