Raw cards are the all time best. I don’t mind graded cards but there’s something about that raw card that takes me back to that exact time of opening a pack of cards and getting the card of your favorite players. 1972 is my all time favorite.

I love feeling a card from this era, though I understand having a gem mint example encapsulated because any time you handle it, you could potentially drop hundreds or thousands of dollars from its value.

You promised tidbits at the end, but then gave us that tidbit about Brooks Robinson's triple plays less than halfway through the video. Your generosity simply cannot be restricted by timecode.

These categories of videos are always a pleasure to watch. I'm a long time advocate of Garvey for the HOF. Compare him to Harold Baines: Garvey won an MVP and had 5 finishes in the top 6 in voting. Baines had none. Garvey one of the best fielding 1B of the era, while Baines didn't even play the field most of his career.
@markdelaney8092
@markdelaney8092 10 месяцев назад
Garvey was a good player, but not Hall of Fame Worthy. His WAR is only 38, and he ranks 51 in JAWS, below George Scott. Keith Henandez is the most worthy of all the overlooked first-basemen.

I have 9 of the 20. Like a lot of kids I passed them around, traded them etc...we never would have thought to put them away safe and sound and untouched. I always wonder what the stories to these cards are. How are they in such condition at a time when protective sleeves didn't even exist. Great video!

Love the video! I am sure the reason that Topps used the same photo's was that in those days color photography was expensive. A lot of people in that era didn't even have color tv sets yet!! Thus old motel signs would actually list that they offered color tv's in the rooms...

That '71 Dusty / Don is a pain. I had a really nice one so graded it; got a SGC 7.5. Decided I didn't need one that nice, and sold it. I'll be darned if I didn't pay nearly as much to replace it with a PSA 5 a few months later. I should have just kept the one I got graded for my set...

12 of those players are still alive and 8 have passed. (Ignoring the 3rd player on the Baylor/Baker rookie and ignoring the ‘Ruth’ card completely). Looking at the ages of the remaining 12 it’s kind of depressing to think what’s to come over the next ten years. Of _all_ the 16 players cards from 1971 there are only 12 PSA 10s in existence. Aaron has 4, Garvey 2, and one each for Byleven, Rose, Seaver, Simmons, Banks, and Clemente. If we were to add in the Ryan and Carew cards from ‘71 it wouldn’t matter, they have no PSA 10s either. Condition sensitive indeed.

Thurman Munson 1971 Topps in, a PSA 8 would set you back about 5 thousand or so. But, a 9 could be upwards of 200,000 dollars!? Wow...I kind of get it, it's an iconic card, but still....geesh. Although some Zion Williamson cards still being bought for 4 and even 5 figures, the hobby doesn't make much sense. Lol

I actually thought Bert Blyleven was going to be higher on the list. Even if he's, ''just a pitcher,'' the rookie card is still in the 1971 Topps set, and it's not so easy finding one in high grade compared to some of the other years.

Munson is the most distasteful exclusion from the HoF. He literally isn't in the hall because he died. He doesn't have "good enough numbers" because he only played 11 seasons. But there's a ten year minimum career length for entry. So why are players held to a numbers standard it takes 15-18 years to attain? He was his leagues best overall catcher for about a decade, only Bench ahead of him in MLB for the 70s. Great leader, multiple championships where he was a pivotal piece. Great performer in the post season with a career .357 playoff average, .373 in 16 WS games with a .900+ OPS. Career reg season avg of .292, won ROY and an MVP, had 2 other top 7 finishes and 7 of his 11 seasons he was top 26.
@ACD1994
@ACD1994 Год назад
Well said. Hopefully, Ted Simmons' HOF induction will help give Munson's candidacy, some new life. Thurman should have been voted in years ago. While he might not have the longevity as some of the others what he did accomplish in the time he had, was quite impressive.
