Every year in April, Hawkeye Bowmen Archery Club, located in Western New York holds thier "Spring Thaw" Primitive Archery Shoot(Selfbows and wood arrows only).
One of the big events is the "Clout Shoot".Just about everyone in camp shows up for this event.

I am English and although I love my longbow I also have a flatbow and enjoy that as well . I intend to buy my next bow direct when i visit the USA again and will be bringing it back with me . might bring back a few ! lol . nice to see everyone enjoying themselves so much .

I live in Marin County North of San Francisco and graduated from Sir Francis Drake High School Class of 1975. I love watching Kevin on The History Squad and the Young English guy who is dressed like Robin Hood or one of His Band of Good Men. I thought sure That You should Have access to the finest bows and equipments. We do have a excellent Shop Here in Marin that is affordable and stays open at night with a indoor range. I was watching this video to send to My daughter in Las Vegas. They have plenty of areas there to do these things without any communist lickspittles reporting to the police. When I was into archery years ago ( I need to get back into it) We considered this type of target as a long range or walk up variable distance. Our Idea of a Battle Shoot was a target radius flat on the ground and We would shoot high into the air with plunging fire coming down vertical onto the target. I suggested to My daughter that a fort or castle mock up with full or half scale mannequin type figures dressed in mock or quasi realistic armor could be shot at. There are places in California where that can be done but a lot of people Here are just plain complainer’s and pompous asses. They even Changed the name of Drake High School. I personally knew Archie William’s the Former Olympic Runner who tutored My Dad in Math and taught there and He was a really good Guy but I do not think He would agree with usurping Drake as the Schools namesake.

That was great...great shoot. I noticed that most people were shooting flat bows (which is cool), but this type of shoot is more suited to powerful ELBs. I wonder if anyone in the US hunts with a traditional English longbow like James and Maurice Thompson did?

This is not clout shooting. Clout is when the target is on the ground and is about 200yards away, this requires that the shot is into the air so that it drops into the target which is a standard size target. It usually requires the use of a long bow, a war bow as such and is the normal six arrows. The target is marked by flags of the normal colour, small flags like marker pegs and a rope tethered at the centre so that it can be swept round in a circle marking the arrows that have fallen into the target area.a full shoot is 144 arrows. It got its name because it took some clout to shoot at that distance and was designed for the practice of raining arrows onto the enermy, with a degree of careful shooting so as not to waste arrows, it was conducted usually on flat ground, its surprising just how good you can become with practice, LOTS OF PRACTICE. Usually there was a break during the shoot, this was to let the bow cool down as it would have really been put to heavy work for this shoot. There are few clubs now with a range big enough to allow clout to be practiced.
