On February 7th, 2015, I travelled to a small island in the Northwest corner of Washington State. Orcas Island, the largest of the San Juan Islands, is a beautiful, serene land mass with rolling hills, rugged mountains and lush old growth forest. On this day, the clouds opened up in true Washington State fashion and dumped rain throughout the 30+ mile course that winds its way throughout Moran State Park and up to the top of Mt Constitution (the island's highest point). Needless to say, it was an incredibly sloppy & rewarding day for all the athletes that toed the starting line.
Many thanks to Rainshadow Running (James, Kerri, Matt, Gretchen & the incredible volunteers) for allowing me to tag along and follow the hundreds of athletes that took on the arduous day. This was the 10th anniversary of the Orcas Island 50k and here's to 100 more years!
Reading the stats of the race on paper does not do this course justice. Just to give you an idea of why this is considered one of the tougher 50ks in the Northwest, here are some of the 2015 stats:
Nearly 9000' of elevation gain (Across 3 major climbs)
241 finishers / 34 DNF / 44 DNS
At least 10 stitches
2 puncture wounds (both legs)
1 broken limb
Number of mud-free runners: Zero.
