"Riddle of the Model," "Up," "Drive it Like You Stole It" or "Brown Shoes" all could have been nominated for Best Original Song. Sing Street got robbed.
*Only "Drive It Like You Stole It" (which should've been nominated) and "Go Now" were submitted to Academy, so...you keep dreaming about those other three you mentioned (as catchy as they are).*
I really wanted Ashton Sanders, and Jack Reynor to be nominated for best supporting actor. I also really wanted a song from Sing Street to be nominated.
I love that Alonso mentioned Nate Parker vs Casey Affleck vs Mel Gibson. White men's shit gets excused in Hollywood. It's either you drag everyone equally or you don't let someone's personal life cloud your judgement of their movie.
Birth of a Nation was poorly made shit. Casey Affleck shouldn't have been nominated for playing Casey Affleck in Manchester. Mel Gibson completely deserved his nomination, and would be a worthy winner IMO.
As far as Mel Gibson goes, I think enough time has passed and he's done enough good work that he's being slowly allowed back into the industry. Also, it's just about something he said. He didn't actually sexually assault anyone. If Donald Trump can say things like that and be president, Mel Gibson can make movies. Perverted as it is. With Casey Affleck, his case was settled out of court, and the case went away pretty quietly, the validity of the complaints called into question as well. He also handled the case a lot better than Nate Parker did, who outright raped an unconscious woman with a co-screenwriter on Birth of a Nation, and the screenwriter was found guilty. He was later acquitted on an appeal because the victim refused to testify. She later committed suicide, and Nate Parker has never apologized for it. He said all the wrong things about it when the news reemerged, and he dg himself into a pit. And the fact that there is a rape scene in his movie adds insult to injury.
MC Wyman MC Wyman Nate Parker was acquitted so please get your facts right. He was never found guilty. And a lot of the public scrutiny was for Nate and the screenwriter. And when was Casey Affleck ever forced to talk about the incident in an interview? He had his brother Ben and good friend Matt protecting his ass.
"White men's shit gets excused in Hollywood." Spike Lee still has a career and he's said shit absolutely on par with Mel's drunken Nazi rant. They're just glorified cameramen when it boils down to it. If they make a good movie then all the power to them. Same with Polanski. Separate the art from the artist.
+Sebastian Quevedo Yeah, was shocked Frances Ha was completely snubbed. A little bit more understandable with Mistress America, but I still absolutely adored that movie.
All About Eve, Titanic & La La Land are now the 3 films with 14 Oscar Nominations!

Am I the only one that gets annoyed when Titanic and Ben Hur are brought up as the biggest oscar winners of all time, while Return of The King is kinda sorta ignored in those talks? I mean, they did all win 11, right?
Lorenzo Castanon I feel like this year there were simple more great performances from great black actors or more roles in which they could be great While there were no roles for latinos and one Asian role They don't even give the people the chance to be best
Lorenzo Castanon this is what far left radicals and third wave feminists dont get. Amazing how that alonso really doesnt get the absurdity of trying to get everything balanced
leo sky We don't agree with you and suddenly were 'liberals and feminists'?. This type of rhetoric is why people at the center, libertarians and neutral people are being driven to the left, particularly these last few weeks. If we disagree with someone on the right, were somehow all lumped together as an enemy, no matter what we actually believe. At this point you right wing nuts are getting to be as radical as the SJWs
Hi movie lovers - I may have missed the boat in previous years. But, this is the first year that I have seen so many great movies centered on Black Culture. LOVING, FENCES, & HIDDEN FIGURES. I think this year will make up for the controversial lack of diversity in last years Oscars. Not because this is a make up. But because these films are great and deserve recognition. My favorite is Ruth Negga in LOVING. Her performance is both subtle and beautiful. If you see any videos of Mildred Loving, you will see how closely Ruth captured her essence.
La La Land was meant for me to love and I thought it was cool. The problem came when it was hyped - started sweeping awards, blasting me with automatic RU-vid commercials & meeting records. I saw it again...I had a screw face the entire time
What do you mean "we're getting there"? Is it the goal to have as many skin colors in best actor nomination as possible? I thought it was supposed to be about the best performances.
That might be difficult to understand for some people, but what a person says while drunk, extremely angry and in a private conversation shouldnt really be anybody's business
Despite the many issues with The Birth of a Nation I still think Nate Parker deserved a nomination for best actor his performance carried that film through it's lesser moments and direction
I'd take Andrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge, but I would put Colin Farrell for The Lobster, Trevante Rhodes for Moonlight or even Andrew Garfield for Silence before Nate Parker.
John Debono I think Trevante Rhodes qualified for supporting actor oddly enough, just based on what I've seen on various websites. And although I prefer Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge over those other 2 performances you mentioned they are all very close and I don't think you could go wrong with any of them.
Sully did get nominated for Best Sound Editing at the very least, and Pixar did technically get nominated this year, for Best Animated Short (Piper). And Michael Shannon didn't get nominated for 99 Homes, but he did get a Golden Globe nom.
The number of nominations has little to do with the actual number of wins. A few years ago, American Hustle received a ton of nominations, but no wins.
To be fair to Casey, Nate, and Mel, scandals in their social lives have absolutely no bearing on the quality of their work as artists. The Oscars are an award show based ostensibly on merit, not on "does your personal life meet my personal moral standards".
"Your Name" (known as "Kimi no na Wa" in Japan) not getting a nomination for best animated film really hurt especially since the Ghibli one did and it turned out to be probably the most boring Ghibli film I have seen to this day.
I dont believe there needs to be any minority in the nominations if you earned the nom you earned the nom thats it. The fact that people say that there NEEDS to be a black/asian/latino/white nomination is absurd
Truthfully, Casey Affleck and Mel Gibson slide by while Nate Parker gets left off awards season because Birth of a Nation wasn't nearly as good a movie, and definitely not as well received as Manchester or Hacksaw. It deflated when it was released, many critics found it overhyped, and it bombed at the box office. Subject matter doesn't guarantee awards success. I wouldn't have minded a Best Actor nomination for Parker but his direction was sloppy and the message of the film came off very confused which I felt handicapped the film.
Nate Parker being dismissed is an artist because he's a bad person is unfair (although arguably his film isn't worthy of recognition), but let's not compare rape that led to suicide with sexual harassment (what Casey allegedly did) or hateful remarks while drunk by an alcoholic (what Mel did).
I don't think Shannon is even the best supporting performance in the movie. Talyor Johnson is the standout in Nocturnal Animals. It kinda feels like Shannon is nominated for previous performances, which seems to be how the Oscars works.
I think that they should nominate movies that actually have a shot of winning, instead of just "filler" movies. I would've been fine with them just nominating Moonlight, La La Land, Manchester By the Sea and Hell or High Water.
Damn, Alonso, thanks for stereotyping and marginalizing. There aren't just "gay kids" who liked movies and paid more attention to the Oscars better than football and the Super Bowl. People with certain personality characteristics have been conditioned to think if they like something, then it means that thing is crafted for people with their personalities and others can't be fans of it.
If you were Amy Adams, would you particularly care if you were nominated or not? Amy has enough going on in her life, and enough reason to like herself and feel validated and gratified that such thing is really not going to upset her too much. I mean it's nice, don't get me wrong, but she'll be alright.
Ben said it as a joke, but "fuck the rest of the world, America is number 1" was exactly what La La Land meant to me. Cheeessy storytelling and some cheap tricks to get you emotionally involved. Overhyped indeed
The Return of the King should never have beaten a film like Master & Commander and that's coming from someone who is a HUGE fan of LOTR. Personally they should've given 'Fellowship' the Best Picture win over ROTK. As for La La Land, it's a good movie but it's very derivative of many other works and is more of an extended homage to classic films than a truly original work of art. If I had to pick a Best picture winner for 2016 I'd probably choose 'Hell or High Water' or 'Lion'.
I will be fine with the guaranteed 10 or so wins La La Land is gonna get only if Moonlight wins Best Picture. I do agree that La La Land is being overhyped even though I did enjoy it. I think that Moonlight was 10x better aesthetically and story wise
Paulie Walnuts I highly disagree. The third act (titled Black) shows Chiron literally build a physical shield in order to protect himself against the homophobia that he constantly faced as a young child. Aesthetically, the movie takes in that persona as well by creating a much more calm atmosphere than the previous act (titled Chiron). The simple question "Who is you Chiron?" asked by his childhood friend catches Chiron off guard and the last shot of the entire film is the two men next to each other, seemingly in a loving way (which gives the viewers a sense of closure with Chiron at least acknowledging his relationship with his friend). I like to call this movie "brutally subtle" in which it doesn't go the stereotypical route that so many of these Oscar bait movies go for in their narratives with big conflict and fighting. This film feels so real and I respect the hell out of Barry Jenkins (and the original playwright) for taking that narrative turn
Rolled my eyes when they started talking about Mel Gibson.... ffs leave it be. He got nominated for his directing, not for his personality, so leave it alone
I wonder what those actors, directors and writers, who happen to be black, think about the fact that the major thing these progressives highlight about their nomination is their skin color.
Mary James JTE probably won't win another match for a while. He usually chokes. If Bibbs didn't get scores and soundtracks Bibbs probably would've won.
People Make Mistakes, shit happens Mel Deserves forgiveness he's been nothing but good for years. Nate Parker Birth of a Nation is good but nothing special both acting and directing
Academy, not a mention of Don Cheadle's Miles Ahead film on Mr. Miles Davis!A Heist&heroin Film Tim Buckley&Norman Mailer would've held a candle to!!!Award don't mean shit:)What The Flick!?:)
Paulie Walnuts if you're talking about The Oscars and you're not commenting on the controversies, past and present, then you're not really covering the Oscars. Even people who get really excited about the Oscars know that it's largely political and not purely merit. Half the story is the snubs and controversies. It's not SJW to talk about them.
No but they're agreeing that until we get this amount of blacks or asians or arabs or fucking whatever then we'll still complain when it should never be about the color of someone elses skin.
If it should never be about the color of someone else's skin, then isn't it kind of strange that the vast majority of the nominees are always white? It's not so much about the Oscars as it is about the asymmetry of the playing field. What type of movies tend to be made, who tends to be involved with them, and what tends to be nominated.
Paulie Walnuts oh boo hoo the ocscars started handing awards to more diverse people even though it always has been mostly white no doubt, what shall we ever do? lol grow up. all people in hollywood that have different ethnic backgrounds been making amazing films for the longest and now that theyre getting noticed you call it some sjw shit?
+Curtis Because white people are the vast majority in the US you idiot. And if you look at the statistics in terms of black actor nominations in the last 30-40 years it actually equals their percentage of the population so that give me that bullshit.
