The 2021 Honda Ridgeline Sport HPD is a More Robust Looking Multifaceted Truck

The #HondaRidgeline wasn't the first "car truck" when it came to market over a decade ago, but it was one of the most versatile trucks with lots of clever new features introduced to the truck world. For 2021, ‪@Honda‬ is giving the #Ridgeline more butch looks with the #RidgelineHPD package and an updated front & rear fascia. The clever in-bed trunk remains and #Honda has made more tech features standard, but the #RidgelineSport is getting some new competition later this year in the form of the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick.

Happy Sunday everyone! Hope you are having a wonderful holiday weekend. The Ridgeline was one of the first lifestyle trucks to come to market over a decade ago, but new competitors such as the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick are right around the corner. We will be driving the new Santa Cruz in August, but for now, Honda has given their truck a thorough update for 2021. Are you a fan of the more truckish looks this year?

Sofyan, the tailgate is rated at a 300 lb. load WHILE IN MOTION - it can handle CONSIDERABLY more weight while stopped, so no worries about "fat people" breaking it. :) The second generation Ridgeline's tailgate is a carryover from the one on the first generation which was tested to support the weight of another Ridgeline between two Ridgelines with their tailgates lowered (I can provide the source for this information upon request). Also, you might knock off a couple of TENTHS of a second by using the 10-speed instead of the 9-speed, but not two SECONDS - you'd need another hundred horsepower or so to do that. :). Another also, did you have the transmission in D or S when performing your 0-60 test? In D, the transmission normally starts in second gear and has to downshift to first on heavy acceleration which wastes time. In S, the transmission starts in first for faster acceleration.

For a refresh it is fine with me. With the redesign coming in a few years you really just need to increase the ground clearance, bed height and improve infotainment. You already have the best all wheel drive systems, one of the highest payload capacities in it's class and without a doubt the best handling and comfort. This is definitely more a truck than many of it's competitors. BTW, unless the Santa Cruz can tow 5000lbs, haul 1500lbs, comfortably hold five Redline reviewers and has an all-weather beating torque vectoring SH-AWD system, I wouldn't compare it to the class-leading Honda Ridgeline.

They’re filling a niche...leave it at that..they’re not trying to be an F350 Super Duty
@frankmorris4790
@frankmorris4790 3 года назад
What would that niche be?
@chuckd7423
@chuckd7423 3 года назад
@@frankmorris4790 A niche where a comfortable ride and extra rear seat room is more important than a slightly longer bed and an increase in towing ability over 5k pounds, that will never be used. A niche that finds a large, weatherproof locking "trunk" under the bed, along with weatherproof storage for the spare tire and jack to be very desirable features. A niche that finds having a tailgate that swings out to make reaching into the bed far easier than in other pickups very useful, especially for women, kids, and shorter men. A niche where a very capable torque vectoring AWD system that comes standard in all Ridgeline versions can be very useful in some parts of the country. A niche that never intends to use a pickup for heavy duty hauling, but could use one that fills the bill for comfortable family transportation while still being capable of running down to Home Depot and picking up a new refrigerator, or other bulky or messy items not suitable for SUV transport. Not to mention added safety features that aren't available in many pickups, and paddle shifters for those who want to control the transmission shift points under some conditions. These features may not be important to some, but might be to others, hence the description of "niche". I'm in the market for such a vehicle myself, but am waiting for the Santa Cruz and Maverick to come to market because those vehicles are about a foot shorter than the Ridgeline, or other compact pickups, and will offer somewhat similar capabilities while still fitting in my garage without me having to tear out a 2 foot deep workbench and storage cabinets that span the width of the front of the garage. Not to mention that the Santa Cruz and Maverick will also cost considerably less.
@frankmorris4790
@frankmorris4790 3 года назад
@@chuckd7423 All true. Sadly my "niche' is a ranch in New Mexico where we have two CRVs that fill the bill quite nicely for all you mention . If the time ever comes that Honda ever builds a real truck, sans gimmicks for soccer moms, I'll be the first in line because having owned six Honda's ( the first a three door in 76") I know what they can do. The stories I could tell, from Mexico to Montana!
@frankmorris4790
@frankmorris4790 3 года назад
@@chuckd7423 Well, except the refrigerator part the CRV will do, it can do an awful lot. I've hauled wood, water, tools, feed, groceries and done it in all weathers and road conditions in a CRV. We are twenty miles from town and better than a mile off the pavement. We could by God BE a commercial! The two we have are a 2001 and a 2006. We even had a third, a 2011 but it didn't last long here, a little to "urban" being somewhat closer to the ground and having an inside mounted doughnut of a spare. Out here we like having full size spare and having them mounted outside. That sunken trunk will gather in the "messy". I just wonder how well the gimmicky two way tail gate will hold up with real world work, hoping it does, thinkin' it won't.
@chuckd7423
@chuckd7423 3 года назад
@@frankmorris4790 Glad your CRVs work out for you, but the bed in the Ridgeline could be useful for a lot more things than what I mentioned. For example, it doesn't have wheelwells intruding, so it's wide enough to lay plywood or sheetrock flat, and will carry quite a load of that type of cargo with the tailgate down, and if you carry any type of loose landscaping material in the bed, like a load of sand, dirt, or mulch, you can just hose the composite bed out when you're done, which I don't think you would want to do with a CRV or any other type of SUV. it will also tow a lot more than your CRV if towing is ever needed. I occasionally tow a small boat and utility trailer with my older Chevy pickup, but can't imagine a situation where I would need a tow capability greater than the 5k the Ridgeline offers. I watched a couple of RU-vid videos testing it's torque vectoring AWD capabilities and it was pretty impressive in where it could go offroad, albeit ground clearance is pretty low, but for most terrain other than rock crawling that shouldn't be a big issue. It went through sandy, muddy terrain just fine and scrambled right up a sandy, rutted, steep hill that the reviewer said the previous 3 AWD vehicles tested failed to climb. I currently own a 2011 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 sedan and an older, standard cab Chevy Silverado pickup. Both have been reliable vehicles but the Chevy is a 95 model with over 250k miles, and I'm seriously eyeballing something like the Ridgeline that can serve as both a passenger vehicle and still haul or tow all I need, replacing my two vehicles with one. As for the storage "trunk" under the bed, you could be right about it getting messy, depending on how it's used, but I don't think it would be a problem for how I would use it. It's completely water tight, and there are videos of people taking the vehicle through car washes, with the trunk staying bone dry. Anyway, it's made of composite material and has a drain plug, so it should be easy to clean. I'm waiting for the Santa Cruz and Maverick to come out before I pull the trigger on anything, but the only fault I have with the Ridgeline is that it's fairly expensive and is also a little too long to fit into my garage without tearing out my built in, 2 foot deep workbench and storage cabinets, while the Santa Cruz and Maverick, both being about a foot shorter, will both fit with a few inches to spare, and they should cost less to purchase. Everyone has their own priorities for vehicle needs though, and if your CRVs work for you, that's great. I have an older brother who buys a new CRV every 2 or 3 years, and both he and his wife love them. They don't use them as trucks though, as they live in the country on property with quite a bit of acreage and have a truck for truck duties. My biggest problem with CRVs is that they use CVT transmissions and I've never warmed up to those, although CVTs have improved over the years.

I agree with most of what he says feels like you’re driving a mini van, but I actually enjoy the smooth ride coming from a Tacoma. If you’re the kind of person that buys a truck specifically so you come off being more “manly” on the road the Ridgeline won’t boost your ego. It is low to the ground, but your family will appreciate not having to climb up in and out of a lifted truck. I disagree with the interior being dated or inexpensive looking I test drove the new Ranger and Colorado before buying this and those look way more dated and have cheaper build materials but they are cheaper msrp. There’s not a lot of torque out of low gears like most trucks wish that was a bit better, but plenty of power to do what I need. It’s a car like driving experience with a nice size bed to haul things fits in any garage with room to spare and easy to park for city dwellers. If your looking to go rough terrain rock climbing or back road mudding this isn’t built for that.

Im not seeing your point. This ridgeline literally hits it's mark perfectly. This is designed for 90% of truck owners. This isn't for people towing large boats and other things. This is designed for people that need a pilot but occasionally tow something under 5000 pounds and need a open bed instead of a trunk. This literally hits the mark perfectly.

Not to mention that the bed capability is nearly tops in the class with nearly 1500lbs of payload capacity.

The design of Ridgeline was better suited to meeting my needs than any other midsize truck. However, it has 2 fatal defects. First it is not an off-road truck, so the standard AWD only adds complexity, decreases fuel economy, and adds $3,000 to the price when compared to the completion. If you live in a snow belt then disregard that comment. Second, it has one of the last remaining interference timing belt engines. Apparently, Honda has no problem saving $10-15 per vehicle when they know every customer will spend $1,000 between 60,000 and 100,000 miles to change the timing belt and water pump. And the HPD package is more than a $3,000 option for some graphics and tire package. Try buying a Ridgeline for less than $40,000.

Their ten speed is a much better transmission, and I can't understand why they don't use it in more vehicles. They use it in the Odyssey, so it is compatible with the six cylinder engine. My guess is that they either lack the manufacturing capability or are obligated by a pre-existing contract with ZF to purchase X number of transmissions.
