Hi, very nice bike, I have 2021 disck trucker green pea from stock’s. I like your saddle bags seriously 😄, very practical 👍. I was a full carbon before, but my life style as physician with 50y old make me sedentary with lot of work. So I’m no a bike rider any more and this bike is very comfortable to me. I bought this bike with skepticism, but I do not regret it, it takes me where I want, and I finish the route without any pain or discomfort. Thanks for the video.

Thanks, Jason! Hill climbing is a dream. Over 5,000 miles now on this drivetrain. Any lower, and I'd fall over climbing, any higher I could only use on a downhill. iMO, it is the absolute perfect gearing.
@atexnik
@atexnik 2 года назад
The lowest gear-inch you get with solely GRX components is around 18 for 700/40 tyres. If you're aiming at even lower margin, then you need to mix components from various groupsets/brands.
@atexnik
@atexnik 2 года назад
15:28 I really don't understand why companies producing touring bike still overlook the need for the simple thing as rear kickstand mount plate integrated into the dropout. Luckily, some other companies like Trek, Marin, and most of EU makers understand that. Why Surly is so stubborn, I don't know. I personally use it multiple times a day, and while I like clickstand and other lifesavers, a rear kickstand paired with front kickstand is the way to go for a loaded bike, and it takes you only a fraction of second to deploy them. Surly offers central kickstand mount plate, but the problem with central kickstand is that it block the anticlockwise rotation of cranks, which is useful when you need to lubricate the chain and there's nowhere to lean your bike to.

Thanks for the review. I’m considering the disk trucker in a 62cm. I like the bike but for $2 grand the components seem rather low end . I wonder what I’d be looking at to buy the frame $700 and have it built with a full GRX group say a 2x11? I do like the XT crank. Don’t need the dynamo hub. Looks great. Any info appreciated . Thank for introducing your setup to us! IMO it‘s a shame you can‘t use 180mm or even bigger disc brakes on it. I mean it is a bike for touring while carrying a lot of weight. I would prefer Vbrakes instead of small 160mm discs.

I think I was wrong in the video, because my tires are actually 35mm. The max for these Velo Orange is listed as 37mm. The only tip I have is that we had to stack washers under the front arms that go to the end of the fork to get them out far enough to twist out the thru axle because of the racks being so close. Other than that, it was a pretty easy install. Hope this helps!

I haven't had a flat, but I removed the wheel. On the axle lever side, Tim put four of the valve stem knurled rings stacked up where the bottom of the rack bolts on. Gives it just enough clearance to spin. Hope this helps!

Nice setup. How much for the whole setup, including labor for the bike shop, excluding any removable items such as locks, pannier (boxes), tents etc. With so much customization, did you consider another brand such as Co-Motion. Did you choose the bike shop because they were local or because they had special experience in customizing surly bikes. Thanks for you help
@RedeemingEden
@RedeemingEden 3 года назад
Thanks! Without add ons it was about $6,000. With locks, panniers, and other add ons (not camping or vlogging) about $7,000. I looked at every brand very meticulously, and gladly chose Surly because they met or exceeded all my needs like completely custom personalization. I researched the two closest Surly dealers, and my LBS. Sent the parts list, asked a solid completion date and compared prices and mechanic experience. Bicycle Michael's in New Orleans won that bid by a LONG shot. So glad I chose them. I have had zero problems with the bike, and I'm 2,000 miles in on it. Thanks for your interest, and the questions!
@Moodus55
@Moodus55 3 года назад
Many Thanks. So the price jump was almost 4-fold. Did you keep a spreadsheet of parts and cost of each. Looking into your customization (and my own very personal preferences, I currently have a 2014 LHT, 700 cc, 56cm). Now I am looking at a Surly DT or Co-Motion. Shimano Ultegra or GRX800 set and some Brooks enhancements (leather, seat, tape etc), Shwalbe Marathon 38mm, Crane Creek seat post, stand, back & front racks. Hopefully all within $3500. It would be great if you can share your spreadsheet. I want to keep the bike light and abound changes hubs. Many Thanks

How did you manage to mix GRX FD with MTB chainset? Also, do I understand correctly, that you changed the low chainring?
@RedeemingEden
@RedeemingEden 2 года назад
So, the GRX group set is mostly a mountain group set. I used it for a road bike application. It isn't supposed to work with a 11-42, but I tried it, and it has worked perfectly for 4,000+ miles. The B-Limit has to be backed out a good bit, but it works. Yes, I custom ordered the chainrings separately. I went with 24 and 38 and I don't feel like I could have made a better group set for "Clydesdale" style touring. Let me know if you have any other questions!
@Digi20
@Digi20 2 года назад
The chainline for the GRX Crankset/FD is wider than for the road components and sits pretty much in between shimano road and MTB (road: 43,5mm, grx 46,9mm, mtb 48.8m) - it is not meant to be used for MTB cranksets, but adjusted accordingly all the way out it actually *can* work - its a bit frameset/mount/crankset/BB depandent between it barely working or not beeing able to shift the big ring correctly. best way of knowing if it will work is basically to try it out for your setup and see how it goes. if your frameset has a 68mm bottom bracket you can also try to offset the crankset by a millimeter or so to the left by using different spacers for both sides and so get the chainling in the working range of the derailleur.
@atexnik
@atexnik 2 года назад
@@RedeemingEden no, my question was regarding the MTB crankset and GRX front derailleur. Why I'm asking is because the GRX groupset uses Shimano Road shifting index (cable pull ratio), which is not matching the MTB index. To put it other way, I am interested to know if the spacing between the chainrings of a double MTB crankset is matching the travelling distance of the GRX front derailleur. Because as far as I know the spacing on MTB is not the same as on GRX.
@atexnik
@atexnik 2 года назад
@@Digi20 yeah, I know that trick. That's how you do to make incompatible groupsets "compatibile":) Usually the road and grx FDs don't travel that far out, that's why Surly Disk Trucker and Trek 520 come with non-standard spacer and BB configurations out of box to let the Sora FD clear the biggest chainring of triple MTB chainset.
@RedeemingEden
@RedeemingEden 2 года назад
