And now the Instrument starts selling as fast as the Excavator after that review dropped. K2 is killing it both with boards, and stacking their team lately.

I won this board last year in a sales contest and was super surprised with how well it handled. It’s fast when you wanna go and it has a switchblade like ability throughout any conditions. Loved it.

I was looking for a directional all-mountain utility knife and bought this board primarily on Avran's review. And it delivers. Shockingly nimble in the tight stuff but very stable at high speeds. The Instrument is lively but not hyperactive even in the unpredictable tracked out trails and groomers transitioning into mogul fields. Spot on review! I know board size is always a big question. I'm 155, 6ft, 9.5 boot. Board is a 154. Perfect fit. I normally ride a 157 in a standard board.

So, full day on the board. Avran 100% correct: feels like I've been riding this board for 10 years. Rome DMD Bindings, Burton Ion 9 boots. Rode reference stance/setback. Decent powder on crust day. Silver Mtn, Idaho. Powder float amazing. Carves lock in and go, at your pleasure. Super surf mode/skid turns anywhere. Pop was super nice. Like free to pop and get distance on rollers. Felt good at decent speed but no way to know because of powder/dusting everywhere. As fast as i went, board was stable with no chatter, but this was prob not more than 35mph. Rode lots of trees, a lot of steep trees, spaced in short chutes. Edge to edge was a touch slow, BUT this could 100% be me. Go with whatever Avran says in his edge to edge assessment. Avran thanks for the recommendation...10/10 on happiness with purchase. I took a 15 minute break for a snack, but rode 10-4 and didn't wanna stop.. And I'm old AF.

Rode the 2022-2023 157 instrument yesterday and absolutely loved it. I think I'ma go 160 tho because I weigh 211lbs and have 10.5 boots. I feel the same as you though, I felt super familiar on the board immediately with the reference stance

ended up grabbing this as my eastcoast powder day board for my quiver(never that deep in WV/PA/VA where I primarily ride). I have a feeling this is the year we get our blizzard and frequent snow every 6 years. I also wanted a tapered directional board that doesnt require my A game all the time like the gnu banked country I got last year. used your evo links so hopefully you got that referral comish. picked up last years model in a 154 with a $60 discount coupon too. gotta love it. hopefully this deck brings me back to the early 90s days of me on my little burton air. thats what i been looking for but not getting since i started back up in 2020 after a good 15 years away. thanks for all you do. i dont vibe with any of these other reviewers.

I thought I was going to get that black version but was surprised to see the light blue Peter Sutherland version. It's a beautiful board. I get Non-stop compliments on it. I thought they sent the wrong board. Rode it about 15 days in the Midwest. It's a ton of fun. Super dynamic and tons of personality. It can do a little of everything with 0 hookiness. I don't know if you're going to be able to find it anywhere unless they restock them this late in the season.

Just got a new 2023 Instrument 154. Stupid price that I couldn’t ignore. Arrived today. Gonna go cut groomers and such at 49° North, here in NE Washington in the morning. I got a Rome Blur 159 in 2021. I like it, but you gotta bring A game with that board. It’s getting easier, but I wanted something more playful while I get my legs under me and while I’m losing weight. I wanted a 2022 or 2023 Mtnpig, but I can’t land one cheap enough so I’ll wait for next season. I know what to expect, but I don’t. Riding Rome DOD bindings and Burton Ion boots (speed lace version). I shall report back. Thanks Avran for all you do brother. I’m 5’7 about 185. Size 9 boot. Prob a little small for me, weight wise, but I’m on a weight loss path that will get me to 170. At which point, I’ll be strong enough to manhandle this bish.

As always, your reviews are spot on my man! Absolutely love this board!! Made 3 trips to Colorado this winter and the board performed fantastic! My last 3 boards were the Jones Flagship, Mountain Twin, and the Salomon Dancehaul. I feel like this board has the best traits of all 3. The Dancehaul might be a bit better on moguls and trees, but it's also the shortest of the 4. For me, the base on this board is BY FAR the fastest and most durable I've ridden. I'm now making it across flat sections/cat tracks that I was always forced to unstrap and push previously. It just glide over the snow and also holds an edge on just about anything. Not sleeping on K2 anymore! Thanks again!

@ Avran and/or @ Angry Snowboarder : Rome National and K2 Instrument appear to be versatile snowboards of choice for Avran. I was wondering if he could only choose one..? And if for a similar price, the Korua Shapes Otto (or Café Racer) would also come into play, would that make the choice even more difficult..!? Thank you very much for your time and advice. P.S. : All-mountain Freestyle... not a lot of snow in general here (Mtl, QC), good grips on hard snow (ice!) are therefore valued. Almost no Park, mostly ski pistes, some side hits and other (K2) simple pleasures...

Avran I'm looking at the k2 instrument, Salomon Super 8, and the Rome Freaker in a 160. The k2 and super 8 look to have very similar specs and on the freeride side of things, is there much difference between them and is one better than the other for any reason? Looking for something on the stiffer side for hard charging, popping off rollers and side hits, no park other than hitting some occasional small to medium jumps. I live in the midwest and usually only make it out to Colorado 1 or 2 times during a season. I'm a rad dad 220lb with a size 11.5 boot. I know the Freaker is more of directional twin but does it fall into the same class as the k2 or salomon as a freeride deck? Really like the dual pop rods on it but is the Rome Sinterstrong base one of the combos of extruded and sintered? Prefer sintered. thanks!

Once again, I'd like to bring the discussion back to the Excavator. Is the Excavator a volume shifted version of the Instrument? Because, apart from that, i can't see any difference on paper or from the reviews ? But on closer look, The Instrument is a kind of Mid wide anyway. Which to choose as a groomer ripper, powder chaser, one board solution ?
@AngrySnowboarder

Flex is different, on edge it rides different, overall they hit two similar types of riders. Instrument is your more progressing price conscious rider and Excavator is more your advanced rider that knows what's up with pow.

Hi Avran, do you think this board is better at slow speed carving than the Flagship? Love my Flagship, but not for the slower sections like trees and moguls.

@@AngrySnowboarder Ha! Guess I deserve that one! Pressing my luck, but how about trees then?
@AngrySnowboarder

It slays it in the trees. It's more torsionally soft than your Flagship which lets you twist it easier to power through a turn.

Assuming the same price; this or super 8 pro in 154? Chutes, trees, pow, speed. Mountain is steep and fast and I only ride fresh snow. I venture to secret spots so durability and speed are paramount. Will this disappoint in those areas compared to the super 8 pro? Had a super 8 and ravine select last year but neither floated or withstood abuse like my stun gun 150. Will be riding a stale fish 153 or sashimi 156 as the dedicated pow stick. 6'/180lbs/11 boots; fast and powerful rider, used to race downhill skateboards so like to size down.
