The new Kawasaki Z650RS enters a crowded market of retro bikes alongside popular options like the Ducati Scrambler and Triumph Bonneville. With a 649cc parallel twin borrowed from the Ninja 650 sport bike, the Z650RS simply modifies the more futuristic Z650 with a classically designed gas tank, circular analog gauges, and even vintage-styled mirrors that actually offer some level of adjustability.
It's also got ABS, a digital display cluster between the analog gauges, and a slipper clutch. The high bars lead to an upright posture and combined with softer suspension, produce a smoother ride. Output of 67 horsepower and 48 lb-ft of torque certainly scoot this 412-pound bike along nicely, without ever feeling overwhelming. If only the throttle modulation received a little improvement, Kawaski might just have built the perfect retro-sport bike. Watch as HotCars contributor Michael Van Runkle takes the Z650RS for a spin in the hills of Malibu and Topanga.
