The 2023 Toyota Sequoia Is a Totally New, Surprisingly Cool Full-Size SUV 

Honestly, this is a great redesign and a huge improvement. Toyota did a great job on the Sequoia

My dad gave me his from 2002 and it runs like a dream. I’m still driving it with 242,000 miles.

This will likely be the replacement for Doug’s Land Cruiser.

I have always liked watching dougs reviews but man... The amount of details and quirks he shows especially that morse code thing. Its insanely impressive

I work at the Toyota plant in San Antonio, Texas. Our first redesign in over a decade and a half, so don’t expect these to be crawling the streets anytime soon, as we’re all working hard to pump these out as fast as we can.

I bought my first Toyota nine months ago with 172,000 miles on it and it is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned! I am Toyota for life.

I find it interesting how restrained the styling is compared to the Tundra pickup, which has a giant grille in comparison to the smaller grille on the Sequoia.

As a first gen sequoia owner, I'm so happy to see that the sequoia is finally getting the attention it deserves from Toyota. It's been a long time coming! Excited to see it out on the road!

I had a 2010 Lincoln MKT (the large station-wagony-SUV-cum-hearse/taxi) that had cooled second row seats. Sometimes they even worked.

Oh man, that Morse “badass” is pretty sweet too. Love the detail.

The cheap plastic in the third row is actually the normal/correct material. Normally manufacturers use a "grain" on their plastics to give it a specific texture or pattern to make it feel nicer to the touch. This is sometimes done by applying an acid to the steel tooling used in the injection molding. What you're seeing here is the plastic WITHOUT that, so the texture reflects the freshly machined steel that they are pumping liquid plastic into during the injection molding process. A lot of prototype and mule vehicles use these "ungrained" parts since it's quick and cheaper to make those tools. Toyota either gave you a preproduction model or just did some cost cutting on an area they didn't think customers would touch often. I find it very odd on an interior piece. Even Engine covers are grained.

The reason why I like watching Doug is that he often doesn't overlook small quirks that most car reviewers do, such as the morse code on the windshield, and that he seems to enjoy presenting the hidden secrets of the car to viewers. Imformative and entertaining.

Two things - there is a usb-c port on the passenger side of the third row, it is underneath the arm rest. Also, if this is a preproduction vehicle, there is a good chance the training in the third row plastic isn’t finalized yet so it might actually be a placeholder for a nicer plastic

I am presently driving a 2001 Toyota Sequoia I purchased brand new. It still looks great! I have always parked in my garage so maybe that’s why it has kept it’s beauty. I can attest that it has been one of the best vehicles on the road. I sometimes do preventative maintenance, but it is an awesome machine. The 2023 looks pretty good too!

Great review of a surprisingly nice update for Toyota. I think they did a wonderful job of bringing it more current. It's a shame they fell a bit short in the electronics displays but not really a show stopper. It would be nice to see you put these things up on a lift so we can have an inspection on the underside to see how good or not it looks under there. Also, no mention of a full size spare, do we get one? Super cool Easter Eggs.

It's great that they have included so many physical buttons for the most frequently used tasks, instead of the silly touchscreen.

That gauge cluster is going to be a showstopper for a lot of people Doug probably sold a boatload of Sequoias for Toyota with his Morse Code explanation! And his great review!

Glad to see the sequoia is still being appreciated. Almost forgot about the sequoia until they released the TRD Pro a few years back, then they only sold like 1k of them and everyone forgot about it. now its here with a whole new and improved platform!

Glad to see Doug covering the new sequoia! I feel the sequoia has always been overshadowed by the land cruiser but with the land cruiser gone in the us that may soon change.

Sequeefa... I'm really digging the way they blended the vents into the display. Although it still doesn't look as good as when manufacturers sink it into the dash. Overall Toyota has done a nice job.

Toyota is definitely stepping up their styling. 👍🏾

FYI. With the digital gauge cluster, the left side isn’t the only area that can be adjusted as you mentioned. The right side of the gauge cluster can also be customized. You scrolled past it at 12:22. Granted the layout of the display still could use some work. Thanks for a wonderful review as always.

Thanks for the thorough review. One RU-vidr mentioned hesitation or chatter “Chadder” when the car switched from electric motor to gasoline engine? What are your thoughts? Was that hybrid to gasoline transition felt when you drove it or was it smooth?

The third row that doesn't fold flat is a very big issue for me, sadly. I am buying this mostly for towing and will almost exclusively be used as a 5-seater. The trunk room is for camping gear, etc. I've been waiting for this vehicle for years and this is likely a deal-breaker.

Absolutely love the new Sequoia. The front end looks much more fitting on this over the Tundra imo. BADASS TRUCKS.

I like how the super large screen is complemented by super large icons. makes it that little bit safer to select what you want to while minimizing the time your eyes are off the road.

Love the real shifter! Doug use your influence to convince pickup truck makers (Cough RAM cough) to get rid of the gimmicky dials and put a real shifter back in the trucks. Ever plow or backup a trailer with a rotary shifter? What are they thinking?!?!

I remember seeing this at the Texas auto show seeing this on the Toyota aisle made me feel that Toyota is dominating the car industry

I plan to buy 2nd year model so major bugs are worked out by then. Hopefully they’ll made updates to the screens to allow better configurations. Can the 3rd row be removed for flat storage?

My car camera is similar! It only rotates with cameras when in park, when in drive it has a better view of surroundings

Honestly love the fact that there is a real shifter, absolutely can’t stand the rotary shifters and other complicated gadgets. My ram longhorn has a rotary shifter and I can’t tell you how many times I have accidentally left it in reverse when exiting the vehicle.

This will be what replaces my wife's 17 Sienna. Nearly twice the power with almost the same mileage. My wife likes to run into stuff. It starts to get expensive in a minivan but I can put a brush guard on this.

There was an option in the gauge cluster to change the right side. I bet that allows you to customize the screen more.

We Finally got one. Super lucky I called the dealer that day to see if they had any and someone backed out of their custom order which had everything we actually wanted. Never done a car deal so fast.

Best clever design I ever seen in Toyotas vehicle , I bought Lexus LX last month , I am happy with most of things despite , after all 3 rows up , hardly fit 3 bags , everything is nearly perfect , I enjoy every moment driving the vehicle but raising the 3 row little amount of space , we don’t get sequoia in Australia , I don’t know why

Great review! We're looking into a full-size SUV as my NX is already maxed out with 4 of us in it. A second baby + stroller won't cut it haha

14:13 they even took GMC's interior styling, the shape and texture of those buttons are very similar to my truck, same with the shape of those vents and the material on the dashboard with the stitching.

It's funny how no one talks about the fact that a twin-turbocharged V6 is a super high-compression motor that's working a lot harder than a V8 that's just loping along. No one thinks about the fact that that V6 is under an incredible amount of stress and it will definitely affect its lifespan. There's nothing that beats the longevity of a well-built V8.

1992 Renault Twingo hatchback used to have sliding rear seats. Very interesting.

I really hope they offer these with an option of no 3rd row seating. The fold down seats don't allow you to put big bulky items in there because the floor is not level. Having a flat, uniform cargo area as an option would be great.

A gorgeous redesign! But That cargo area definetly is small for its class. But the tailgate glass opening is still a big perk. The MPG is attractive in its class. Save gas in the city commute, and have more hybrid torque during adverse weather or mild off roading. On pricing: the 2001 first generation SR5 started at around 35k MSRP, which, in 2022 dollars now is about 57k. Though the top trims of the 2022 far exceed the 2001 limited by a few thousand dollars. Of course, I say this as if I could ever anything above 50k HAHAHA...

Nice but I'm sticking with my 2nd generation Sequoia. Two things that jumped out at me were that the rear window no longer rolls down 😕 and when the 3rd row folds down it no longer creates a flush surface which really cuts down on the cargo functionality. Plus I'm keeping my tried-and-true 5.7 L V-8 which I know will give me hundreds of thousands of miles of use. I'll wait and see how long a turbo V-6 holds up. Great review as always.

I thought for years the Sequoia would be discontinued but it just kept dribbling out. So glad they finally redid it.

I will never understand why “car like” continues to be a staple of auto journalist lingo when talking about trucks and SUVs. Car like is the last thing I want out of a truck or truck-based SUV, especially in terms of comfort. A “car like” ride is stiff, rebound is fast and not compliant. I love the way the 4Runner and 200 series Land Cruiser ride with their soft, body rolling, incredibly capable suspension. When you go over bumps and harsh road joints there’s a moment of “float” instead of instant suspension reaction and recovery. NVH is better, lateral G’s are felt less as body roll redirects that energy. Please stop comparing large SUV’s and modern pickup trucks to cars lol, its just silly. Anyway, I had to point that out. Great review of a fantastic TRUCK from Toyota. They absolutely nailed this.

Taking a note from Jeep with adding the decals on the windshield. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think they do that so if the glass breaks, you’re more likely to take it to a Toyota dealer than a third party glass replacement company.

Doug, have you been approached by any car manufacturers to help design any of their vehicles? While you'll likely drive up their cost on the vehicle with your preferences (lol), they could definitely benefit from your insight.

Only thing holding me back from the Sequoia is the lack of an extended length version! We use all three rows of seats in our Expedition EL and the space behind the 3rd row is irreplaceable! Suburbans have had that extra space forever and the Jeep Wagoneer just got an L version!

Cooled rear seats are also in the Palisade, but it is definitely a feature that I wish was more standard.

I didn’t see cupholders in console. I have Escalade and rear cargo has way more room and I can take out 2 rear seats if needed.

Would love to see a side by side comparison against the Sienna Hybrid!
