The Red Canyon Enduro kicked off the 2024 TSCEC & BJEC enduro series'. It was 65 miles of varying West Texas terrain that challenged every level of enduro racer. Enjoy the race recap, and get involved in the comments. ⚡🛑 Utility Can Caddy 🛑⚡shop.seattime.co/products/uti...
This first enduro was a co-sanctioned event between TSCEC (Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit) and BJEC (Black Jack Enduro Circuit). It was also a restart format, meaning we only needed to worry about checking in and out of checks, and then transferring down the trail in a timely manner. As far as an enduro format goes, it was a simple day. If was rather rude of them to start the day with an 11.5 mile test, but that's part of racing.
I registered on row 29 so I could have a few moments being pulled by Cole Kirkpatrick. He is a multi-time TSCEC Champion, and past National Enduro Competitor. He still has crazy speed, and is one to watch to learn from. I was very surprised at the speed I did have on the bike at the beginning of the day. The terrain wasn't too difficult, allowing me to find a flow state that balanced between speed and aggression.
During the third test I clipped my handlebar, and clutch lever, on a tree. From that moment on, my clutch pull never felt the same. It would pump up, becoming extremely difficult to pull. As the terrain got more difficult, the bike started acting like the clutch was engaging and disengaging randomly. This caused excessive wear on my left forearm, and sporadic moments on the bike. Yes, there is a chance I was just getting more tired as the day wore on, but I don't believe this was the only factor.
The ravines, drop-offs, and climbs we were sent over in test four through six were really fun pieces of trail. I wish I had had a bit more energy, and that my bike had felt like it did earlier so that I could attack them a bit better. Regardless of how I felt, the single track we rode was bitching.
The learnings I'm taking away from the Red Canyon enduro have to do with enduro nutrition and mindset. I didn't consume enough calories during the race day. I underestimated by abilities and speed, so the pace I was keeping throughout the earlier part of the day used up more energy than I planned for. I'll play with adding more UCAN Energy Gels throughout the day on top of my planned nutrition.
When it comes to my mindset, I need to continue to work through pulling the "mental tear off". I was completely rattled after the wreck in Test 4 chasing Cole. It was a strange feeling, but it zapped me mentally, which then zapped me physically. I have to work on letting go what has occurred. It's in the past and can no longer affect what happens in the future, unless I let it. I'll also try to keep myself from making up stories, as I found myself doing that a bit during and after Test 4.
The positives I can take away really do outweigh the negatives that I can learn from. I have found my racer headspace again, which has allowed me to start tapping back into my racer speed. I warmed up really well before the start of the race; I didn't feel any moment of arm pump or sore shoulders. I also was pinching the bike a lot with my legs, and standing up more in sections I used to find myself sitting. There's still room for improvement, but that's the fun of the constant battle of racing and competition.
If it all works out, Liam and I will be at the Sandwinder Enduro, which is a TSCEC event, and then I'll be at the second round of BJEC, the Cross Timbers Enduro. Sandwinder is a hoot, though I'm admittedly much slower there in the wide open sand sections. Cross Timbers Enduro, in OKC, is much more my speed with the red clay and the tighter, twisty wood sections.
I finished 37th Overall and 5th in the 40+ A class. Now that I'm a week removed from the event, I am damn proud of that result. I also know there is a lot more in the tank as I get more seat time, focusing on the things I need to focus on.

So sad I missed this one. I loved it in ‘23, although very cold. Thanks for the conversation about going down and how you just felt mentally defeated. And how to cope. I am not an experienced racer, so to hear someone who has been racing since youth have the same mind battles as I do when I eat sh*t, is encouraging. You do an awesome job, don’t quit.

I heard horror stories of '23. We had EPIC weather for '24! I'm sure it'll be freezing again for Red Canyon in no time. Glad my sidebar on mental fitness resonated. It's been hard for me to "think like a racer" again. With that mental switch to racer comes a lot of thoughts and feelings I just haven't dealt with in a long time. The past couple years I have attended races, but I had my "good times" helmet on. It's a lot easier to brush stuff off when your main goal is to have fun. Maybe that's telling us we need to remember to have fun first, and race second 🤔

I wish i can go back to ride the long course. I remember the end of the test 6 i put the bike to fly like 2 story building. I hope i can get there soon. Great video!!!

Same. That's part of the beauty of traveling across the state, or country, for riding. Even though we want to ride that section again, we probably won't until a year from now. So we can look forward to that moment in time. Until then, we ride, practice, and prepare for what's coming up next! 🤘🏻🤙🏻⚡️

Fun video sir, I enjoy your content. I'm 46 and laid up with an injury since 10/23 and suffering PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome). Watching your videos helps alleviate some of the dread of missing my riding season. Thank you for that!

Heck Yeah! Thank you for the kind words!!! How much longer should your PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome 😂) diagnosis last for?

I really enjoyed this, thanks for sharing! In a weird way these trails are very similar to Indiana and Ohio enduros. No big elevation change, but tight trail that’s constantly going in and out of gulleys and ravines. SxS bark busters might be in your future, they still flex, but actually absorb some of the impact and have a lot more coverage than the Enduro Engineering ones. Less sore fingers or broken clutches.
@SeatTime
@SeatTime 5 месяцев назад
The quick elevation changes can be more technically than some realize. We had what we called 'moguls' where I grew up in Louisiana and they were the same way. You had to find a flow in the quick up and down to ride them smooth, and come out fast. I have very much seen the SXS flags. I run a SXS skid plate on the Sherco currently. I should give them a try. I just like the EE open guards, BUT this moment in time says I need new EE base mounts or I need to try the SXS option. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it! Enjoy #GettingSeattime & Stay #Stoked! 🤘🏻🤙🏻⚡️

Great footage. I think everybody gets inside their own heads every now and then. It can be really difficult to overcome. I worked as an instructor dealing with critical incidents and I believe the key to getting past it is mindset. Think about it before it happens, but not negatively. You're just making yourself ready for if it does. I used to refer to it as mind prep. For what it's worth.

Reminds me of the movie Solo. Alex would think through all possibilities, even the ones where he fell and died. Because that way they wouldn’t creep in while on the climb. I love talking about, and working on, mindset! Keep the thoughts coming! 🤘🏻🤙🏻⚡️

Test 1 only seemed long to those of us that drove down from snowy areas to get on a bike for the first time in months and were fighting arm pump! lol It was a fun race. I totally feel you on the letting stuff get in your head and how it compounds if you can't pull the mental "tear off".

Thanks, and I agree! I'm planning on making videos throughout the year following BJEC. I'm sure I'll have many learnings. I'll see how I can organize those thoughts into "Mental Tear Off" moments we can all leverage. Enjoy #GettingSeattime & Stay #Stoked! 🤘🏻🤙🏻⚡️

I gotta get back out and practice more at race speed as well. Too many hard enduro or fun days.

It's all about what you want. We can't beat ourselves up for not having race pace if we never practice race pace. If practicing hard enduro with our buddies is what we enjoy, that ok. We just have to remember that where we put our focus when it comes to race day. That's why in my Race Prep video I talk about putting the racer helmet on again. I decided to make the mental shift this year to being a racer again. I'm going to practice on the bike as a racer, and analyze my race as a racer. It brings a dynamic not everyone wants, or needs, to enjoy #GettingSeattime.

I’m the dummy laid up on the side of the trail after the ravine section in test 4 😅 I went down hard and was completely gassed and couldn’t even move a muscle. Had to lay there for at least 10 minutes. Fsorry about that😂😂
@SeatTime
@SeatTime 5 месяцев назад
HAHA! You're not a dummy, we've all ben there. At least you were conscious enough to lean over in that ravine. I've been behind a lot of riders who get tired and just sit there. Hopefully once you got going again you enjoyed #GettingSeattime!!!!

I have never understood not liking long test sections. I actually prefer a hare scramble format as I hate the breaks in between tests because I lose my flow. I just want to keep moving so longer sections work for me.
@SeatTime
@SeatTime 5 месяцев назад
Time keeping enduros used to always have a 3 mile buffer, a warm up period if you will. As the restart format has evolved, that buffer period has disappeared since it's not really needed anymore to calibrate odometers and computers. I think some racers miss that warm up period more than they dislike long test sections. I'm with you though, I don't enjoy sitting for long periods of time. BUT, since it's part of the race, we have to figure out the best way to recover, and then turn the volume back up to 11.

I am “old” and out of shape, so I like the breaks.

Its interesting with full wraps your clutch problems wouldn't have happened but with them, it would have bucked your bars, probably crashing you. I don't know which is worse.
@SeatTime
@SeatTime 5 месяцев назад
I thought about that too. What are you, as the rider, more comfortable with and make your decision based off of that. Not what everyone else is doing. Personally, these EE open guards have been great 99% of the time. Especially now that I have threaded the bar ends and found the G-RIP bar ends.
