I love that John, after all these years, is still going strong with this and the formula is mostly the same as the 80s I love watching these and the “retro review” ones and seeing how similar it is
It's not targeted towards you. It's for people who do Crossfit and wear backwards flat brim snapbacks with tribal tattoos lol. Experts and inside sources hinted at this 3 years ago incognito. This is for the rugged bro types with deep pockets and want a Lexus still. For reference: See TRDJon. Those who want luxury with wood, now must buy the LX 600.
That is because it also is more luxurious. New Lexus models are all much cheaper inside due to aggressive cost cutting. There is no reason to buy Lexus anymore, it's sad.
@@imnotusingmyrealname4566 Or more people want this interior. They are in the business to make money. If wood sold more they would sell it. Where is the "cost cutting"? No wood? It's sad? Bro wipe your tears away. It will be ok. You will still be able to get to Whole Foods.
“BODY ON FRAME”, #1 reason I’m trading in my 2022 BMW X5 for this. I had no idea what a unibody vs body on frame was. I was in a terrible car accident 15 years ago. I was in a Nissan 350Z. A man just decided he’d run me down in his truck. Broke every bone in my leg. He’s in prison. Luckily I had a DashCam. Completely random. I promised myself I’d never drive a car ever again and started driving SUVS. Only to find out this year watching videos on this vehicle that I’m actually still driving A FUC$&@!ing CAR! A UNIBODY. Speed and performance of the X5 were a wonderful bonus but not the prime reason I bought the vehicle. Had I know this terminology about car frames I would have went to Lexus and Toyota first. My neighbor drives a Tesla and constantly reminds me his carbon footprint is lighter than mine. I asked him how many miles a day he drives and charges off the grid. Once he realized my heavier gas guzzler actually just stays parked and asleep in my garage because I work from home he shut up. My lifestyle and job affords me a heavy gas guzzler and I still have 1/5 the carbon footprint of Tesla neighbor. Also According to Highway crash test ratings being better and much higher on body on frame my insurance has dropped for the car and my life insurance also is lower. “RISK ASSESSMENT” I am far more likely to arrive home alive than my Tesla neighbor and the insurance Companies know this.
Safety involves a number of factors. If you look at real world fatality rates for specific vehicles, in general, bigger and heavier can do better, but not always. Many other factors enter into it. Big body on frame SUV’s have much higher risk for tip over, and can be more ponderous in handling and less good at short stopping ability. Accident avoidance is part of a vehicle’s skill set too.
Just finished watching the retro marathon over the holiday. John still has it! Grew up watching him since the late 80s and he’s just one of those comforting voices that puts all at ease. Sorta reminds of a Mr. Rogers of the automotive world :)
Lexus GXs hold their value well. A 2009 GX with 150k miles will sell for 12k in 2024, because they hold their value well, and can last a long time. One of my relatives had a 2005 GX that they bought in 2005 and still have it today.
got hooked watching John and crew in 1986 while in college. always appreciated how his reviews were positive and anything that was remotely negative was presented as "it's not necessarily our favorite option" or "possibly room for improvement". Got the point across without being overly critical
THE LEGENDARY JOHN DAVIS!!!!!!!!!!! I Know you've been talking about retiring since season 25 John (according to Ben Davis) But please please don't retire. There aren't too many of you great guys around anymore it's so great to see how well you're doing, take care and keep up the great work, John we love you! :)
Toyota cheapened out on this model versus the previous GX460. The interior has far more hard plastic, the luxurious roof liner is gone, and while before the EK-DSS system (to prevent body roll) was on all trim levels, it is now only on the Overtrail version. Add to that a hood that vibrates/shakes at freeway speeds and the problem with the twin turbo motor spinning its main bearings, this is not an improvement on the previous model.
@@donniesumling8549 recalled in the Tundras and some other models, most were built in Alabama, but that engine was first put in the luxury LS in 2017 and has been driven to a million miles by Toyota. They caught the issue in the 22/23 models. The 24 have no issues that anyone has reported as of yet and the good part is the GX 550 is still built solely and fully in Japan. way more attention to detail over there. The 24 models will be like the 2017 bullet proof.
No, the tundra, and Lexus LX have a different engine, similar but different. This one has been detuned a bit and has smaller turbos. It's based on the same design and Toyota has figured out the issue with the engine and has implemented a fix at the manufacturing level. The Car Care Nut on RU-vid did a great video on it about 2 weeks ago.
"The 2024 Lexus GX550 is A Land Cruiser With A Lexus Badge" And a nicer interior, and a bigger / better engine (if/once they confirm it's not impacted by the oiling issue), 2 more forward gears, a lower rear deck because no hybrid battery. Oh, and an Overtrail is the same price as how you'd spec a Land Cruiser for offroading? Easy choice then. I spent a couple of days in Moab in a new press loaner Land Cruiser. It didn't feel premium, everything you touch / see is cheap. Powertrain was a notch above adequate, the seats were comfortable. But every other complaint I had with it is fixed by the Lexus GX. For the same money. Toyota screwed up this 4Runner / Land Cruiser / GX product cycle. The 4Runner and Land Cruiser having the same powertrain is going to cost them Land Cruiser sales. They should have put the Land Cruiser where the GX Overtrail / Overtrail+ lives, and had the GX focus on luxury. I'm buying a GX to offroad in Colorado, it's replacing a heavily modified 4Runner. It will be nice to finally have a truck that doesn't struggle on I-70.
A 2025 4Runner could do the same once it comes out. The 4.0L doesn't do 75mph steep high altitude climbs very well, but that new 2.4L turbo, sans hybrid, does. If they ever offer the Land Cruiser 250 without the hybrid, turbo four only, I'd go for that; but I suspect they wont. Regardless I love my '23 4Runner and I can certainly live with choosing to rev it out or go slower on steep high speed mountain climbs. I'm also in the Utah/Colorado area.
@@thatoneotherotherguy Part of why my 4.0L doesn't do I-70 well is because I've added 800 pounds of armor, bumpers and winch to it. The lift and bumper also hurts the aerodynamics. I did it to the truck, I accept that. But this is why so many people considering FJs and 4Runners for offroading have been buying V8 GX's for years now. Because you can do all that to it and it still has enough power.
A few gripes: with a vehicle this heavy and also a luxury category they should offer a larger brake and brake disc option, something BMW X5 has spoiled me with. Also more off-road rim tire choices, the land cruiser off-road rims and tires look far better. A lift leveling kit should be offered, looks a little stupid with the back higher than the front “to the trained eye”. Land Cruiser is definitely crossed off my list because it’s only available in hybrid. I will never be tricked into having a large battery again. A hybrid will not last 200,000 miles like older Toyotas and Lexus unless you’re willing to spend 18,000$ to replace the battery every 50,000 miles. Yea yea the battery still works at 50K with only 40% charging capacity and a MASSIVE drop in horsepower. That won’t be a problem in this V6 here we are looking at.
I think the engine versions are very very close… tuning is different for sure. As much as I want to like the GX, there’s no way I’m buying one till Toyota gets it together on this engine. The engine’s bad press and (apparent) lack of good faith to make corrections is going to hurt them until they come clean.
V8 GX = 15mpg on 87 octane. 150 miles = 10 gallons at $3.25 = $32.50 to drive 150 miles. New GX = 17mpg on 93 octane. 150 miles = 8.82 gallons at $3.99 = $35.19 to drive 150 miles. explain how this is an improvement?
JD still at it! Here's to many more years of awesomeness! Me, I can't wait for retirement, but I think JD enjoys his job too much for that to be something to look forward to. Good thing for him, and an even better thing for his fans. /e
@@Taras-Nabad That's a tough one. I've been waiting years for this new GX and I'm disappointed in everything I've read and watched. But to answer your question, a Tahoe Z71 with the 6.2 liter V8. And that's comparing apples and oranges. The obvious choice would be a Defender but reliability is still a problem there. So, I'm screwed.
The hood on the Lexus GX 550 is thinner than a beer can. Go tap on the hood lightly and see how much it flexes. Then drive it over 45 mph and watch the reflection in the hood as it buffets in the wind stream. The land cruiser has a much thicker hood.
It's the design, the LC has the same hood, made out of the same material. The hood does not move like that at all. I drive mine at 85 and nothing. They did that to save weight. Plus Toyota went back and adjusted the hood issues on the later runs and attached them tighter and different sealing material. Maybe thats why mine has no issues. The very first ones, the dealer will do the same thing under warranty. The truck is amazing and that so called hood thinner than a beer can, will last for ever! own both the GX 460 and the new 550, an FJ trail teams and a Prado in my home in Europe. The GX 550 is fully built in Japan and its one heck of an SUV. The only thing I dont like, is that you must get the Over Land to get the new EKDSS and off road goodies. My GX 460 is base and has the old KDSS. I got the Over Trail, with the rock sliders and rubber mats, for my 24 and again, I love it! it's a great off roader. Not one, at my dealer was available for sale, all sold. FYI the LC is great, but for the same price, you get a 4 banger, which I am sure is awesome, but no KDSS, no off road tires and the lexus Over land is only 2k more, no brainer. Plus it rides way better than the LC and better ground clearance. Also Toyota has already said that the GX 550 is also rated to take 87 Octane and 91 is recommended. I put 87 Octane and it drives great. Then again, I put 87 Octane in GX 460 and my FJ and they have never complained. My Prado is Diesel so choice there. lol.
Besides the upcoming hybrid, will Lexus spawn a LWB GX? Should Toyota also consider a LWB Land Cruiser 250? Both would be more suited against the Land Rover Defender 130 but also all the American extended-length full-size SUVs such as the Chevy Suburban, Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer L, and Lincoln Navigator L?
This is an interesting move by Toyota/Lexus. Before, the GX was the only way to get a Land Cruiser Prado in the US, but now you have two ways to get the new LC Prado. Still, the Lexus LX600 is the only way to get the new 300 series LC in the US.
I like it better than the old prehistoric previous Lexus GX, but this new model looks like it’s made out of LEGOS. How many people are taking these expensive Lexus trucks off-road? It’s a shame that so few will take this where it belongs. If you’re not going to use it for off-roading then you are much better off with the softer Lexus RX or RZ.
too bad latest Lexus SUVs no longer have chrome and wood interior and exterior pieces. NuLux smells bad and look cheap too. only thing that stands out is the 14 inch head unit that works really well and wireless connect is quick and consistent. save many thousand and get the Toyota version of this.
Which bright engineer at Lexus thought it was a good idea to place the rear wiper at the bottom of the glass. Can’t it be tucked away at the top like the previous generations? Absolute nonsense.
Lexus makes a Land Rover Defender that will work everyday, and keep its resale value You are giving up a more luxurious interior, and your losing a step in performance I would expect Lexus to offer the more potent six-cylinder hybrid in 2025, to better compete with the Defender, which offers more speed and power, for similar money.
😢 It comes with recall papers and a AAA in the glove compartment for a free tow back to the dealership. Don't buy this piece of 💩... And.. Could they make it any Uglier?.. I doubt it..🤮
Fk Government keep the V8 legendary engine…EV’s are worse for the environment when you look at all aspects including mining for material and discarding batteries…
@@costaricasurf66 “Toyota is having with their 3.4 twin turbo engine throwing front main bearings in the Tundra? Same engine (V35A-FTS)” Evidently he is right.
@@RabbiJesus show me 1 gx failure motors made at different plants and different production times and not 100% identical. Probably 500k 3.4 engines built since the LS and a handful reported. Show me more than a few actual issues. And show 1 GX engine failure. I’m not even a Lexus fanboy. But I know Lexus is more proactive than ford who has had 10000s of ecoboost failures. Also look up the 5.7 and 4.6 v8s had a larger number or recalls in the first few years yet you’d paprbabky say most reliable motor ever made. Again show me a gx550 engine failure.
@costaricasurf66 you are making a ridiculous argument. Obviously the GX has not been out long enough in the hands of customers for engines to fail, in case Toyota hasn't properly fixed the manufacturing problems that is the cause according to Toyota itself. Stop with your show me 1 GX engine failure nonsense.
Except "doing your research" is a bunch of non-buyers shrieking that the world is ending over a short term production issue; not a fundamental engine design issue.
@@thatoneotherotherguyit’s because everyone d rides Toyota because they’re “bulletproof” so it’s hilarious when Toyota makes something that has major issues. The Toyota fanboys are always so quick to defend them no matter what
4Runner is based on the GX460/Landcruiser Prado 150, NOT the other way around. 4runner deletes kdss, fulltime 4wd the v8, 6 speed transmission, and all the lux.
That why I’m holding on to my 2004 V-8 Limited w/ full time 4x4 has 445,000 miles on it May pull the trigger on the 2025 4Runner have test driven both the new GX, last years GX and the new Landcruiser. Not overly impressed with any of them. Liked the new LC >2024 GX> 2023 GX
