46 grand for SR5 is absolutely ridiculous, it’s like paying 68 grand for a jeep wrangler! What is happening with those manufacturers? Has everyone lost their mind? Who in the right mind would pay 50 grand for a goddamned mid-side truck? You can get a fully loaded Honda Ridgeline for less than that! And we haven’t even started to see the prices for their hybrid versions yet… it is absolutely nuts!
Toyota released an inexpensive truck for Thailand (Hilux Champ) and the Philippines (Tamaraw). It's starting price is only $14.5 USD. I'm very tempted to get one when I retire in the Philippines.
Clearly wages have not been keeping up with inflation. Everything has gotten so damn expensive that it is no longer affordable for the common person. This Tacoma is just the latest example. Wages need to go up, or we need deflation.
Ridgeline is a nice CUV with a bed. If you don’t tow, if you don’t go off-road, if you don’t need long bed, Tidgeline is good. But it is not used by one that use their truck for working or off-roading or towing
Yeah and the rear seat space kind of takes it off my shopping list - Have 5'10 and 6'0 sons who aren't driving age yet and it looks like neither of them could fit back there well and $46k is also a little offensive to me for such a spartan midsized truck like this - Will have to check out the competition unfortunately... The Chevy Colorado seems like a much better value on paper anyway.
It's fair pricing. '02 Taco SR5 Prerunner sold for about $22k. Accounting for inflation, today that would be $38k. That's the starting price for this '24 SR5 so it's fair. The affordability issue continues to be our paychecks not tracking with inflation
Couple things on your spec numbers. The engine is port and direct injected. Not just direct injected. Doesnt have a center diff lock on this model either. In fact there is no locker on the sr5. Also that is not a drop in bedliner. That's a composite bed
Got my 2024 SR5. Absolutely lovely to drive. Having that good response on turbocharger combined with i4 gives both good mpg and impressive pull when you actually use gas pedal. Impressed with how stable it is on road. Very good response wheels to body of truck. You don’t get that roll feel or delay between steering wheel and wheels. Also being a Auto Technician and doing lots of structural repairs after collisions for last 10 years.. I’d say the dual wall for upper front rails is an awesome change. As well as a full box frame that this one has unlike previous years Tacomas that had single panel upper rails that would buckle at firewall and c shape rails that would buckle at spare or rear axle totaling a few in. Rear end or front end hits. Looking forward to putting more miles on this.
I test drove a TRD sport, all wheel drive and it felt pretty good and peppy. Everyone is saying a 4 cylinder is not as reliable as a V-6 and won't be as good for off-roading, towing, etc. We will have to wait and see.
4wd not awd. Only tacoma limited trim, GM twins, and Ridgeline in this midsize class offer actual awd. The rest are part-time systems that are pretty annoying to live with (coming from a Ranger owner). I wish my truck did have awd, it sucks getting grip in anything remotely wet or slick, but cant risk switching to 4hi unless it’s snow or off road.
Had 4 Tacomas and have a 2021 now. I'll never buy a turbo or hybrid, but I had to chime in and say these are super expensive. They are a compact truck!!!
This truck now is on a fully boxed frame that your 2021 does not. This truck has much better seating position. This truck has a telescoping steering wheel with much better range than your 2021. This truck’s ride is much better than yours and handles Better because it has coil springs instead of your leaf springs. This truck is LEds standard. This truck has great 8-speed transmission that doesn’t shift up and down like your six speed. This truck has much better infotainment than yours. This truck is faster. I stop. You get the point……..
Go back and look at your review of the Nissan Frontier SV u did 2 years ago. The rims as Similar to it and you got 6.5seconds 0-60. I see SV advertised for 44 with sunroof and LED lights.
That's not true at all; depends on where in the country you're talking about. TFL Truck went four-wheeling in their 2024 Tacoma, and it broke down. No thanks.
I wish Toyota would bring back the smaller Pickup like my '93' which was just called 'Pickup' LOL. These trucks are getting huge, some of us just need a small single cab pickup, no Turbo to do our daily errands. 💁♂️
Unfortunately due to CAFE regulations, just won’t be happening. The smallest “trucks” you can get these days are a Maverick or Santa Cruz. It all comes down to fuel economy.
@@watchreportTo your statement about fuel economy, not so. As the original poster mentioned his 93. My 92 gets better mileage than this one’s. The issue is with all the safety requirements and equipment. Notice the base weight of this thing, wow! The early 90’s trucks were much lighter, smaller and NO safety features, except for a seat belt of course. Unfortunately those days are long gone.
@@eightys4everEPA regulations don’t allow trucks to be that small anymore. Our government came up with a stupid equation to calculate MPG vs vehicle size. Small trucks, with all the safety crumple zones, need to be super efficient if small and that hard to achieve, apparently. If they make it bigger they can get away with worse mpg
Why are these pre-production trucks still being floated around to the RU-vidrs?? If Toyota wants to sell trucks let the RU-vidrs review production trucks at this point. It’s not like they are exactly flying off the shelf especially SR5’s
Just bought a Toyota Tacoma SR5 4x4 with no options, msrp 43k... Dealer wanted 56k.... I paid 46k after taxes and fees, plates etc. How did I do boys? I guess it helped that I paid it in full.
And a larger backseat in the Colorado which is a deal-maker for me compared to the Taco since both of my kids are pushing 6'0 and not driving age yet so they couldn't even fit back there smh.
@@BigAltimaEnergy719 with hearing about bearing failure issues in the Tundra, just waiting to see what issues comes up with the Tacoma. I like some Toyotas, but never understood the infatuation with the Tacoma beyond the gen 2. There are so many better options these days to consider and cheaper
Like my 2024 sr5 . Its comfortable and drives well. I don't really need all the offroad of TRD. I agree with wheels though. I'll probably replace them eventually for some blackouts with a little nicer tires. Thats about all I need. Its a truck.
this thing is proof toyota needs to come out with a maverick sized truck. look at the size of that thing! also i have always been intrigued by how when you close a cars door if its an older platform you can tell by that? i mean does it sound different on a 2015 model vs a 2024 model if its the same platform?
The new Colorado Trail Boss even with its incandescent headlight bulbs just has a overall look and feel that’s more upscale. The GMC Canyon Elevation certainly feels like a nicer truck all around than this especially in the interior.
I can get a Ridgeline with a V6 and all these features for the most part (most of what the average person needs in a truck) for much cheaper. There are still markups but the sport is around $41k where this is around $45k with most of the same features.
Dude, the cheapest Honda model Civic LX is $25k wo a single option and accessory. $40k ain’t that much money nowadays. Have you seen home, rent, utilities, food, insurance cost? My home and rentals are all paid off and I make a decent tech income in the SF Bay Area, it is not like we are struggling here, and I feel the cost increase in every aspect of life……….anyway, to me the Ridgeline RTL is still a heck of a deal at $44k sticker, and I guarantee you I can get $4k off instantly on it, if not more.
@@paulm6481 well if you need to tow over 5k lbs and need a 6’ bed, then consider the Taco but to those who don’t need all that, you can get the Ridgeline with comprable features likely for less. They quoted me for a Taco TRD pro for $54k where as 2024 Ridgeline RTL was about $49k out the door
I'm super happy that I can get an extra cab and a 6 foot bed still. We're down to only Toyota and Nissan offering 6 foot beds on "mid-size" trucks. The Tacoma is nice, but they are getting very expensive. For me it would be a toss up between the mid size extra cab trucks and a full size regular cab truck, price is nearly the same.
I like mine. It does what i want it to do. Had a 2016 before that. Still getting used to it. Thanks. Its 2WD. I really wanted the PreRunner with 6 ft bed ..my salesguy said the factory wasnt making them yet.Mines Underground color.. it seems like its invisible because ive have more close calls people trying to hit me while driving. I keep headlights on all the time and it still doesnt help.
The Nissan Frontier (new body) is the way to go for compact trucks being the cheapest and the Ram 1500 Tradesman (old body but still new) is the way to go for full sized trucks that are the cheapest. Even though they are the cheapest, they are still just BARELY affordable. Anyone thinking about being suckered into buying a new truck or SUV, think about your family first. Then go to your local mobile home dealer and take a look at singlewide trailers. That singlewide trailer costs less than that stupid pickup truck. That should make you reevaluate things. Buy a brand new trailer and you get a brand new home or buy it and rent it out and let someone else pay for it. Use your brains people. Stop letting these automakers rob you. When you buy overpriced vehicles you are creating a market for being robbed by a corporation. When you all do it you are normalizing it. 40k for a damn FULL-SIZED pickup isn't normal let alone a compact truck. It's not even inflation, it's corporate greed. They are recording record high profits while your bank statements are recording record low balances. THINK PEOPLE THINK!
SLIGHTLY PRICY!?!?! You’re being WAY too kind to Toyota. I just bought a brand new loaded Frontier SV crew cab long bed (long wheel base) for $39K OTD. $46K for a lower trim level 4 banger is NUTS. And that’s not counting the freak-show mark-ups from the dealer. I drove past a Toyota dealership yesterday and saw a new Tacoma out front stickered just shy of 70 GRAND!!
@jacksoncornbreadmcbride6763 I am not a know-it-all but I do know that Tacomas have had a composite bed since 2005. My nationality has nothing to do with it.
@@bjsimon802 The new Tacoma now offers coil springs rather than old-school leaf springs from the past giving it a smoother ride. The power from the extra torque has more pep than the sluggish old V6. Go to a dealership and test drive one!
My 2019 sr5 has a 5 foot bed with a bed extender. I perfer the older design. I also like the 6 cylinder engine ( but not the endless gear hunting). Why are the Tacos becoming so large?
I got a new 2023 Tacoma v6 last year for under 30k I can’t justify getting this for over 16 grand more that’s insane how much they are charging these days
The T24A-FTS, A25A-FKS(FXS), M20A-FKS(FXS), and G16E-GTS (GR Yaris and Corolla turbo 3 cylinder) are part of the new dynamic force engine family and all versions have GDI and port injection. The revised 2GR V6 is also GDI/port and isn’t completely retired it’s still in use in the Lexus TX 550h+ PHEV.
That’s common for the segment. Higher trims will get front LED turn signals. The fact that you get standard full LED headlights and taillights, however, is above the segment norm. Competitors like the Colorado and Frontier get full halogen headlights on lower trims, with the former having incandescent taillights, too. So, having those are nice at least.
Really digged the new model when they debuted it. Just saw one in person the other day and it was super underwhelming. Especially the rear.. maybe because it was a sr5 but I was not digging it. My bro picked up the new tundra and the quality was even more disappointing.. felt like I was going to break the upper arm rest area. Also, the rear bumper cap looked like it was going to fall off every time we put the step assist down.. wtf is going on with Toyota?
When these went for $24k buying a “sporty” truck as a lifestyle choice even as you never actually needed a truck this was a thing. At $46k this is foolish flexing.
That hybrid and electric motors produce a lot of torque response. Much better than the old V6. Test drove one and it is nice and day compare to the last gen.
@@Garlander I test drove the new taco with the Turbo 4 as well as the hybrid max in the crown platinum and grand highlander hybrid max. It will be the same power train as Taco and 4Runner TRD Pro and trail hunter. It might even be tuned with more low end torque. My buddy has a Taco TRD pro and I drove it many times as comparison. Longevity and reliability aside, the V6 has nothing in the new turbo or hybrid max.
@@jml9550 that's great and all, but all tacos new and old have the same towing capacity, so unless speed and get up is all people care about, then sure, the new 4 banger has a leg up.
4 cylinder and $ 45k = no sale. Love the body design; it reminds me of the Tundra but it doesn’t have the giant Art the Clown maw that the Tundra has. I dare say this is the better looking of the two trucks. , the wheels look cheap though and that tiny underpowered engine gives me pause from a long term perspective.
The new Toyota interiors look like absolute crap, and I u understand this is pre production. I’m talking about the Tundra and others which this truck will be like with the production version. If this interior quality was in an American truck it would be criticized, but Toyota will get a pass.
This is a good looking and nice truck that surely will be reliable, but you can get a Colorado and ridgeline with all this stuff for way less and Hondas are no slouch in reliability. Toyota trucks and cars, in general, just seem to be getting more expensive compared to its peers.
The new Tacoma SR5 visuals and drivetrain is a BIG FAIL compared to the Ford Ranger XLT. The Tacoma is noisier, looks cheaper, and has poorer 0-60, MPG, and payload/towing ratings YET costs more than the new Ranger XLT. The public is already speaking as discounts are showing up to move the new Tacoma inventory. Toyota reliability was in large part due to not making upgrades and keeping an ancient design in production/for sale for decades. Ford gives you the choice of turbo 4, PHEV, or TT V6. New cab configurations/drivetrains are launching in the Australian market first and later globally. Remember, Ford sells the Ranger globally from three production plants.
Exactly. Toyotas were reliable since they were 20 year old agricultural machines made road legal. 0 refinement but people wanted them that way. Now their reliably will slide while their prices are gone to the moon!
Im still on the "you cant get a naturally aspirated anything, and no 6-speed manual, unless you buy a truck with nothing in it (SR) or blow 55k for a TRD and only a 5-ft box available." For that, id rather go to Nissan for their V6 with no cheap turbos to break later. Sofyan & Company A+ as usual! Toyota? B-.
Well. It may be slightly better. Unfortunately... These does not justify the big increase in pricing. Yet none of the so-called car journalists don't call out Toyota for such insane practice/greed. You guy just give them a pass to keep increasing the price tag. Probably thanks to the luxury invite to their launch event.
