I went through the effort of listening to every single Frank Zappa album released while he was alive, plus a few more, and now you have to hear about it (I am so sorry). Join me as I discuss the first 60 or so albums of Zappa's discography and recommend which ones you might like. Or don't. Most of you are probably just here for anime so do what every you want. I swear more anime stuff will come soon.

I didn’t end up doing a track ranking or anything in the video but if I had to go with a hastily thrown together top 10 Frank Zappa songs this would be a good list: 1. Watermelon In Easter Hay 2. Inca Roads 3. The Black Page 4. The Illinois Enema Bandit 5. Village of the Sun/Echidna’s Arf (Of You)/Don’t You Ever Wash That Thing? 6. G-Spot Tornado 7. More Trouble Everyday 8. Peaches En Regalia 9. RDNZL 10. Montana There’s so many great ones though I thought it’d be helpful to have a list of honorable mentions so here they are. I know it’s a lot but literally every song on this list is good. I’ve noted what I think are the best versions of certain songs where appropriate: Advance Romance (YCDTOSA 5) The Adventures Of Greggery Peccary Alien Orifice (Make a Jazz Noise Here) Any Kind of Pain Bamboozled By Love (YCDTOSA 3) Aybe Sea Be In My Video Big Swifty (YCDTOSA 1) Billy the Mountain Black Napkins Blessed Relief Bobby Brown Goes Down Brown Moses Camarillo Brillo Carolina-Hardcore Ecstasy Catholic Girls Society Pages/I’m A Beautiful Guy/Beauty Knows No Pain/Charlie’s Enormous Mouth Cheepnis City of Tiny Lites Cocaine Decisions Cosmik Debris Crew Slut Cruisin’ For Burgers Dancin’ Fool Dinah-Moe Humm Dirty Love Dog Breath, In The Year of the Plague Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow/Nanook Rubs It/St. Alfonzo’s Pancake Breakfast/Father O’Blivion Orchestral Duke of Prunes Dupree’s Paradise Easy Meat (YCDTOSA 5) Eat That Question Fembot In A Wet T-Shirt Find Her Finer (Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life) Florentine Pogen For the Young Sophisticate The Grand Wazoo The Gumbo Variations Heavenly Bank Account He’s So Gay (YCDTOSA 6) Hot Plate Heaven At The Green Hotel (Does Humor Belong In Music?) I Ain’t Got No Heart (Tinseltown Rebellion) I’m The Slime Jewish Princess Joe’s Garage Jumbo Go Away King Kong Keep it Greasy Let’s Make the Water Turn Black/Harry You’re A Beast/The Orange County Lumber Truck (YCDTOSA 1) Let’s Move to Cleveland Little Umbrellas Lonesome Cowboy Burt Love of My Life (Tinseltown Rebellion) Magic Fingers The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing Moggio Son of Mr. Green Genes Night School Packard Goose (Barcelona the Hard Way or Zappa ‘88: The Last US Show) Pound For A Brown (Zappa In New York) Pygmy Twilight Regyptian Strut Sharleena Shove It Right In Sofa Son of Orange County Status Back Baby Strictly Genteel Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance (YCDTOSA 6) Theme From Burnt Weeny Sandwich A Token Of My Extreme The Torture Never Stops Uncle Meat Waka/Jawaka We Are Not Alone Uncle Remus Valley Girl We’re Turning Again (YCDTOSA 6) Whipping Post (Does Humor Belong In Music?) Nice video! It is definitely an undertaking! My first Zappa album was Joe's Garage as well. I think I have like over 50 of this albums now. The rabbit hole is deep but worth it. I've been really enjoying the posthumous albums. The Halloween concerts are fantastic, buffalo is great, the lost episode is kind of a sentimental favorite of mine especially because of the Duckman connection. It is really nice seeing more people getting into Zappa's works.

As an absolute Zappa fan I congratulate you on your effort to listen to all his music. It's like climbing the Everest. 🙂 I know from experience that the more you get into it, the more things start to open up and create new layers of meaning. I found it charmingly funny how you see certain things as 'random' or 'noise' or 'absurd nonsense'. That's what I thought way back in the beginning. I can assure you, nothing is random in Zappa's universe and the levels of complexity in philosophical thought, social satire, etc. are staggering. As you said at the start, this was your initial take on all the albums. I'd be curious to hear what you would say in a few years time. Happy trails. (By the way, the people in European countries understood the lyrics to Bobby Brown. They just had a totally different attitude towards it back in the seventies. In certain gay communities the song was celebrated. They saw the humour of it and had the attitude of: 'Hey, it's a song about 'us'...eventhough it's raunchy, at least it talks about certain things we know of.' Zappa's humour does not sit comfortably with most mainstream morals but that's a big part of his genius. He's a guy who rummages through society's dirty linen and exposes them. He himself summarized his entire mindset once as: Showing people that the emperor has no clothes.)

Right on! I've been listening to and collecting Zappa since mid 70-ties, and still finds and understands new things in the lyrics and s'compositions of his music almost every time I listen, and will agree that NOTHING is random in Zappas universe. Zappa Lives!

Genuinely surprised you rated Zoot Allures so low; while I acknowledge that the later releases of certain songs could be viewed as better, the album as a whole has remained one of my faves from Zappa; catchy without becoming pedantic, solid without going too far into obtuse shenanigans; and for me, it's memorable from start to finish. But hey, tastes vary and I commend you on this undertaking; Good vid my man!

I actually went more into it on a stream I just did. I definitely feel bad for my negative feelings towards Zoot Allures when the song writing is so outstanding, but I stand by my point that there are better versions of those tracks elsewhere. I'd never begrudge someone for holding it up as one of the best, even if that's not my opinion.

I’m the same. Finished Weezer, MCR, Rise Against and System of a Down. I’m currently trying to complete Metallica, Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, Paramore, Beatles, relistening to Slipknot and relistening to Queen. I’ve mostly doing this to complete a Guilty Gear Song References. But I’ve been enjoying my journey and chewing on the tunes.

Haven’t made it all the way through yet but looking at the sections you missed Dance Me This his final post humous release of studio material most recently before his death. Enjoying the reviews so far I love most all of his work but I appreciate your takes and the time you took to research the history behind his work.

At the end and I see why you didn’t touch on it. Only person I’ve ever heard mention his spotify idea in the 80’s when i read that in his autobiography I was astounded.

I actually missed Dance Me This since it was released so long after Frank died that I wasn't aware it was one he competed while still alive. I also missed Mystery Disc since it's listed as being released in 1998 and I wasn't aware it was originally released as part of the Old Maters box sets. In both cases I found out as the video was basically finished since editing it prompted me to finally start listening through the post-humous stuff in earnest.

Mothers Of Prevention had an American and a European version with different tracks. YCDTOSA V2 was, apart from the Sampler, the only one in the series that was on Vinyl.

I've been a huge Frank Zappa fan for almost a decade (since I was 15) and I really enjoyed enjoyed your commentary regardless of whether or not I happened to agree with you on each album. I have at least 30 albums of his (mostly vinyl records) and my favorite has always been Freak Out but he made so many great ones and I appreciate everything from the early stuff, the more straight up rock stuff from the mid to late 70s, the orchestral music, the jazz-like music and however else you want to categorize his music. And I also noticed that a lot of the sounds on Make A Jazz Noise Here sound like Banjo-Kazooie. My only big complaint about his music is the political and antireligious preaching is pretty annoying. I don't even like any of the politicians I remember him insulting in his music but I hate when musicians write songs telling you what they think about politicians as if people care what they think and want to hear political speeches when they put a musical album on. You're a madman for making your first video about a musician's entire discography be about a guy who you need to do 60+ albums for but I hope you do more.

you need to open yourself up more to zappa’s more expirimental compositions, his sound collage work and avant garde improvisations is just as if not more important than his actual songs, good video though, also civilization phaze iii has an actual story through each song in its booklet, it’s a ballet
@TheSelfHatingWeeb
@TheSelfHatingWeeb 4 месяца назад
I'm trying. The orchestral stuff is growing on me slowly but the sound still a bit out there for me. I can see their importance, but valuing the genius in something and enjoying listening to it are two different things. I didn't know about the story in the booklet of Phase III, I'll definitely have to check that out and see how it changes the experience.

Halfway through this video I had to wonder how much Zappa The Self Hating Weeb actually likes of the Zappa's discography. There seems to be a lot of wincing and whining when it comes to explaining (or trying to explain) what many Zappa fans are drawn to in the non-commercial songs. I give this channel a "yellow" for it's pedestrian view of complex and brilliant music as well as pedantic remarks about Zappa straying from conventional "accessibility" so as not to bore the listener with predictable themes and melody lines.
@TheSelfHatingWeeb
@TheSelfHatingWeeb 5 месяцев назад
I say it in the beginning, but these are a lot of my first impressions as a listener. Additionally, the ratings here are meant for to recommend the albums to a new listener rather than an evaluation of the objective quality of the album. I say at the end that I love Playground Psychotics but give it red because it's not something I think someone would like without having listened to everything else on the list first. I recognize that this might not have been best approach to take with an artist like Zappa who isn't really about accessibility and I definitely noticed I gave way too many albums a yellow throughout all of this. It's something I hope to rectify with a follow up thats more about ranking by musical quality. Of course if you think I'm a moron for not liking Pedro's Dowry or Mo n Herbs Vacation then there's not much I can do about that.

It's just a Personal opinion,we all have them, Zappa is a love/hate relationship for most music fans, you'll have songs that you'll like and I'll dislike,it goes both ways, there's no right answer

Good ranking, but I think you apologize way too much for Frank's music, as if it's something to feel embarrassed about enjoying.
@TheSelfHatingWeeb
@TheSelfHatingWeeb 5 месяцев назад
I get that. I came at this from an angle of recommending Frank to a friend or average person which is kind of a tough sell when his music is so out there. I can see now that was maybe not the right approach to take since accessibility ended up playing a major factor in the ratings and it's something completely disregarded by Zappa's music. I don't think it's something to be embarrassed about enjoying and I regret that that's the impression the video gives off.
@SpaceCattttt
@SpaceCattttt 5 месяцев назад
@@TheSelfHatingWeeb Well, I didn't mean to be hard on you, but to me, Frank's music is the very essence of not caring about censorship. I understand that a lot of people struggle with his dirty joke lyrics and more complex pieces of progressive rock and abstract 12-tone music, etc, but I also think that it's a discography that probably benefits the listener the most if they throw themselves into the deep end of the pool. There are definitely easier "gateway" albums to start with, but the risk is always that people listen to those and then never venture any further than that. Which would be a real shame.
