We absolutely love watching packing videos and decided to record our own packing video BEFORE we leave for our year of full-time travel.
Yes, we did count our items (thank you, Notion) and these are the 246 things we’re packing in our roller suitcases and travel backpacks. Further down in the description you can find links to many of our favorite items we’re packing.
It should be fun to record another packing video a few months into our full-time travels as an update to this video!

You need more than 2 pairs of socks! I found while backpacking that it is underwear and socks that are your bottleneck for when you need to do laundry. The more underwear and socks you have, the less you have to do laundry since you can rewear t-shirts/pants.

@@nicolethompson2399 For me, depends on what the day looked like. I CANNOT re-wear airplane clothes, they feel germy and "soiled" like you said. But going out to lunch, museums, office... Can definitely re-wear pants and undershirts. I don't typically re-wear tops, which is why I pack extras...don't want to spend precious travel time doing laundry. But I'm working on packing less so that's a trade-off that has to be made.

As a frequent traveller, I would strongly advise against one person carrying both passports. There are a million reasons for this but here are a few: 1. It is more likely that one bag will be lost/stolen than 2, 2. you could get separated, 3. liquid could spill one one bag but less likely to spill on both, etc. etc. If something is going to happen to passports, it is always better that one person still have theirs in case of emergency.
@Juli124
@Juli124 2 года назад
Yes! Please always carry your own passport! The embassy will be more likely to be able to issue you some sort of temporary document, if one of you still has their passport and can vouch for the other's identity.

Was going to comment this! Every adult should carry their own and color copies in different locations / bags. Children (not relevant in this specific case, but FYI) should have color copies stashed in their bags along with emergency contact details, and they should know where that paper is and be told to always, always keep it in that spot.

I've been traveling light since 1987. I use the capsule wardrobe method every time. Gotta say, way too many clothes, Caroline. I lost track after jacket #6. Realizing you are planning a multi-climate trip, I know you need a few, but you could cut those down to 4--rain, warm puffer jacket, work out, and that cute jean jacket. You also have all those sweaters, that can double as the layer piece. You will be checking 1 bag each, I promise you. So, re-think packing the Peak Design to make sure you have some actual Clothes in the bag. If I am checking a bag, I pack my carry-on bag with two outfits, my toiletries, meds, and electronics.
@arosete3512
@arosete3512 2 года назад
Too many jackets. My humble opinion.
@dsy1081
@dsy1081 2 года назад
Yeah agree. Also no need to pack everything that you’ll need for a year. Clothing stores exist in other countries. I’d pack a couple of items that could transition to the next climate to tide me over until we could hit an h&m or Uniqlo, etc. when we arrive in a place that I don’t have clothes for. And you’d really only need to purchase a few items. I also make to sure to have a down jacket regardless of climate - they’re just handy to have and take up little space or weight. Traveling is hard on clothes, so you’re probably going to have to replace a few items along the way anyways. You can donate items along the way as well when you’re not going to need them for the next few months.

I agree on all points. It’s a year later so obviously too late for Caroline but not for the people who are trying to learn from this video. Definitely get rid of a few jackets and switch it up so you have a few outfits in your personal item bag. And I’m a self aware overpacked saying this. 😂

As someone who travelled 2 months across Europe - 7 countries - planes, trains, and automobiles and buses - with hubbie and 2 kids and actually did do carryon only, I would have to say you have way too much stuff - far too many clothes. I don't remember seeing a travel clothing line - those come in super handy since a lot of places in Europe for instance don't have dryers including Airbnbs and hotel rooms. I would also echo a lot of other people to say that you will have to check one bag each at numerous airports. Majority of European airlines are very very very strict about size of carryon and weight. Also, what about having to do laundry? That's a lot of clothes to wash and dry.I would also recommend travel towels, (and face cloths if you use them since this was also an often missing thing in hotels and airbnbs. ). My other concern watching your video, was the security aspect. I personally would not be putting anything of value in either the bottle holders on the side of your backpacks (e.g. the tripod) or in the top pocket - way too easy for someone to nick.
@august21xp
@august21xp 2 года назад
Makes sense, also wrinkle free options would have been ideal!
@Ago2904
@Ago2904 2 года назад
I am from Europe, and also travel a lot. I agree with @Caroline Foster-Boucher: you will most likely need to check-in your luggage. Difficult to tell the size of your bags from the video, but they look much bulkier and bigger than what I am used to seeing as carry-on here. Also, I know you‘ll be traveling in different climates and seasons, but do reconsider the amount of clothes you (especially Caroline) is taking. Minimizing might be a process that you go through while you travel and gain experience but having multiples of anything like skirts, dresses, workout clothing, pjs, jackets is a luxury and one that I personally find inconvenient when traveling. It just weighs you down. Take along a little bit of detergent so you can handwash a shirt or the likes and let it dry over night.
@WanderingAimfully

Awesome tips (fellow) Caroline! 👏 Appreciate these and lots for us to think about. Seems like 246 items might have to be dwindled down to... 236 items?? Jk jk jk. We're gonna take a good long look at all our items as we get closer to leaving in January!
@pamwelty
@pamwelty 2 года назад
Ah yes, a small laundry line is essential and takes up very little room. I have one that is 3 lines twisted together so that I can tuck the clothes through the lines without the need of clothes pins. Leave the heat on all day and when I return most things are dry. Drying clothes on a line (either indoors or out) is so typical outside of the US. Articles of clothes that are too heavy will take many days to dry. It's easier to wash and dry my base layer than to wash and dry my outer sweater.

I agree. Travelled all around Europe and the US. I would never put an ipod easy access. Or anything valuable.
@MFreedoom
@MFreedoom 2 года назад
If you come to Europe they WILL make you check one of those bags.. they are both considered carry-on. You also have to put your make up as toiletries if you put it on the over bin compartment. Basically just ONE zip lock bag to fit all of your liquids/lipstick, mascara, concealer.
@evel.6024
@evel.6024 2 года назад
For carry-on baggage in most European countries: 1 ziplock with a capacity of 1 liter and inside containers with liquids and gel-like substances that may only hold up to 100 ml.

I love your enthusiasm but I'd recommend you do a second video before leaving on your trip :) Weigh your backpack and AWAY roller carryon...then weigh your items (a $20 digital kitchen scale works great). Use a digital bathroom scale for your luggage. Check the carry-on size/weight maximums for the airlines you'll be flying. Then you'll know exactly where you stand and what adjustments might need to be made. I did this and boy did it help me make better packing choices!

@rominamartiniello6271
@rominamartiniello6271 2 года назад
Really enjoyed this video, being a serious packing enthusiast myself! I pack cary on only for all trips, whether it's a weekend or for a whole year. I use a 38L backpack as my main bag and then sometimes use my collapsible daypack as a personal item if I have extra stuff, or just to hold the items I want next to me while on the plane/train/bus while my main bag is in the overhead. I know carry on allowances are much more generous in the US, but here in Australia we're limited to 7kgs for carry on and usually only one bag (I usually pack 8-9kgs total), so I often pay much more attention to the weight of every single item I pack. I think you'll definitely have to check your bags during your travels, but if you're ok with that then go for it! Personally, I think you could both cut down a lot on clothes and toiletries and any 'double up' items - for example, you will probably only need one small notebook, and even if you do fill it, you can buy another one on the road. Those are small things, but they really add up in terms of space and weight. A lot of your packing cubes and pouches look really cool, but they also add a lot of weight so I tend to cut down on those. I use really light ones for clothes and super light single-layer cotton ones for things that need to be compartmentalised, then save the padded or more study pouches for things that need it, like tech. Anyway, great video! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on what you've packed while you're on the road.

Watching this video I get the impression that you two aren’t aware of international carry-on restrictions. For example, KLM and other European allow 1 carry-on luggage and 1 personal item. Both the Peak Design and the roller bag are considered carry-ons. There are also size and weight limits for carry-ons. Lastly, some pieces in your luggage violate rules and regulations for carry-on luggage. Lipstick (and mascara) is considered a liquid. I think the tripod isn’t allowed in a carry-on as it could be used as a weapon. Supplements must be carries in their original packaging. Otherwise the authorities could think they’re drugs. I think it would be good to re-consider your luggage strategy.
@ashmachhetry4716
@ashmachhetry4716 2 года назад
yes they take the weight limit very seriously
@lucal.3373
@lucal.3373 2 года назад
Yes, I came here to say this. You can only put on one carry on baggage on budget airlines, or you pay for priority boarding that includes 2 carry on ones. If you don’t pay for that, it still costs the same amount of money to check in your other bag like you would pay for a bigger suitcase. I do not know about tripods, but I can second that many make-uo items are considered liquid and they can be strict about it too if you have more than 10.

I hate arguing in comments but here we go. Here’s where you wrong. 1) as long as your personal item can fit underneath the seat in front of you your fine. The bags, while they might look large on camera, are actually very petite and can and will fit underneath a seat. 2) the away bigger carry on has dimensions that fall within most major airlines baggage guidelines. 3) lipstick and mascara are NOT considered liquids. I don’t know who told you that but their not. And even if they are, the carryon limit for liquids UNIVERSALLY is 3.4 ounces or 96.3 grams. The only thing she will need to do is make sure they are in a clear or plastic container and take them out separately. (I went to four different countries in 2019 alone. I know what I’m talking about)

Love how enthusiastic you both are about travel! I look forward to seeing what you actually decided to go with as your final packing and see what you edit out to get you down to carry-on only. I just returned home from 31 days in Croatia and Slovenia, I did carry-on only, and I'm working on a 'lessons learned' packing video. I successfully did it in a rolling carry-on plus a personal item, but there were still things that I could have left out :)

will be interested to see how you wind up liking your packing cubes down the road. Used them to pack for a world cruise i took and loved them for travel, but of course unpacked completely on ship so not a problem. used them (the compression type) on an overland trip and hated them bc was having to constantly open, repack, open another one, repack etc. preferred the open rolled system for travel living out of the suitcase. Also suggest having some sort of laundry cube so don't have to repack used/dirty clothes back in with clean clothes. Also shoe bags of some type so when shoes are dirty can pack them back in-i just use plastic grocery bags but is a covering. love the merino wool too-works well except i still find it too warm in really tropical countries. bon voyage!!

I find jeans totally unsuitable for travel. Cold in winter and hot in summer and take forever to dry if you get wet in rain or you’re doing laundry. Also, if you gain or lose weight (which often happens when you travel), they are not forgiving.

I feel like you can definitely trim it down more and should, this seems like a lot of clothing. Good additions would be a quick dry towel, a large reusable ziploc type bag, a travel clothesline (i have used this more than i ever imagined),Dr. Bronners soap is a one and done in a pinch even for clothing, i always keep it in my bag. You could shrink your makeup down by finding a small pallette that covers everything. Also random but a chaffing/blister glide stick! It’s ‘hard but you can shrink it down, I travel with less toiletries/makeup, etc for my family of 5, for a 2 wk trip. YOU GOT THIS!!

As others have said, there's no way you can have 2 large carry on bags on European airlines. Particularly if you're hoping to grab cheap flights. Also, sizes and weights seem to be getting smaller. You also dont have warm enough gear for a European winter. A lightweight packable down jacket would be the minimum. And a properly waterproof jacket, not a fashion item, which you can wear over the down jacket if necessary. And a pair of properly waterproof shoes. Lastly, don't take white clothing. It'll quickly go grey in laundromats and mixed in with your other clothes

After much consideration, my husband and I travel internationally with a medium sized suitcase. There are many ways to get that first checked bag free. Two carry-on bags that are too large on a flight outside the US will cost twice as much to check as one medium piece of luggage. May have to take a taxi at destination. It's still under 50 pounds if there are stairs. Getting through the airport with a little backpack each is very physically freeing, too.

Congratulations on your upcoming travel. I agree with previous comments that you probably wont be able to carry on 2 large heavy bags each. So maybe consider which of your items are either hard or expensive to replace and pack those into the Peak Design, which unexpanded is smaller and more likely to make it on, nothing worse than repacking on the concourse with everybody watching and judging. Also, even if you make it onboard there is always the chance there is no room for your luggage and you will have to check anyway. I always have a change of clothes and pj's in my carry on in case my checked luggage decides to holiday somewhere else without me. learnt that the hard way. It is going to be interesting to watch what you keep, jettison and buy on the way. Good Luck

I love how you opted out of the suitcase with built in charger. Like as much as it seems SO cool, if the charger fails within a year or so it feels like a waste of $$$. And you can't make the full use out of a suitcase. If the charger bank breaks then you ditch it for a new one that works, wherever you are. That just is the smarter option. Also the charger is with you, in the plane, etc.

@@WanderingAimfully with US airlines you will likely get away with it. European and Asian ones are very strict. I use a 45litre pack and a small day bag for my travels, have managed to keep them under the combined 22kg, that airlines like KLM as for. I would cut the clothing by at least a third, or risk paying lots of very high late checking fees. Some Euro airlines charge massive fees for checking bags at the airport, almost like a fine. Bags are often weighed and measured together too, so not a lot of wiggle room. My method is to pack for the airline with the toughest restrictions, and that means less hassle when flying.

Thank you so much for showing every single item!! This is incredibly useful. I'd also love to see a video detailing how you planned out your travel capsule wardrobe. You're planning on using those Peak design backpacks as your "personal items" on flights, right? I want to do something similar but wasn't sure if airlines crack down once bags are greater than 40L. Have you looked into this at all? They sure do look compact even though they fit a lot!

love it! very organised. I usually pack about 2 days before I go. I would add: warmer jacket? perhaps if you are in cold country for winter, you can pick up a very warm jacket while you're there. Sweden etc is whole other level freezing. Even Ireland is very cold in winter. I have a very heavy jacket, massive scarf, gloves and woolly hat that is my normal attire for winter outings. Also waterproof shoes (I think you have those) will be needed. Cosy woolly socks for bed Caroline! a mirror- when I was in India alot of places I was in had no mirror for simple things like rubbing in my suncream/ checking my teeth. A mirror that can hang off something or perch on a window is good. microfibre towel is handy for if you go swimming or are going on an outing. sun hat?
@WanderingAimfully
@WanderingAimfully 2 года назад
Great tips, Ciara! We both decided a warmer jacket is SUUUPER easy to buy on the road when we need it. We can layer-up a ton, but a bigger jacket we wanted to leave out until we needed it. 👌 Sun hat kind of fits in the same category. We should be good on the mirror and towels based on the Airbnbs we're picking for the trip 🤗.

Props for putting this out there, but agree with the other overpacking comments. I guess your approach is take all the stuff you normally use and try to fit it in, rather than selecting items specifically for travel. -Leather jacket, chunky wool jumpers, multiple jeans and chinos - these are all big heavy items that would be better to keep to a minimum and wear while on the move. -The guy has 4 pairs of footwear! Excessive. Get a hiking/walking shoe that doubles as an everyday walk-around-the-city shoe, plus sandals and at most one other pair. Enjoy your trip

Thanks for the comment and understanding we want to take as much as we can and we'll figure it out as we go. Speaking to the 4 pairs of footwear, unfortunately when you wear size 16 shoes, you don't have as many options for great all-in-one footwear that you also enjoy wearing 🤗.

Hi guys! Really enjoyed your video and now eyeing the Peak Design backpack. A few thoughts: depending on the airlines a second bag might cost extra even if it's carry-on size. So you might double check that, as you are charged less when you pay it in advance vs paying at the airport. Also, mascara and some lipsticks count as "liquids", and most European airports allow you to have only one bag with "liquids". Obviously, I don't know what's your itinerary for the winter months, but it can be pretty cold in Europe, so I'm concerned if Caroline's work out shoes would be enough to keep her feet warm.
@WanderingAimfully
@WanderingAimfully 2 года назад
Hiiiii Elena 👋 . Yay for enjoying the video and suuuuper appreciate all these helpful thoughts and ideas. We are expecting to have some checked bag run-ins and our thought is we'll unpack some stuff from the Peak Design backpacks into our small day packs, check the roller suitcases, and then just have 2 backpacks when we need to downsize. We know we'll run into some extra bag fees but we're just going to mentally prepare for that 💸😂 . Very interesting about the lipsticks and mascara! We'll have to do more research on that. Oh, and one part of this video we forgot to film was our "what we're wearing while we travel" - which, in Caroline's case, is a set of more rugged/warm boots 😉! Good looking out for her feet!
@lesleyclaster6878
@lesleyclaster6878 2 года назад
Also loved your video and fashion-forward approach! Since you can’t take two carryons, and you are ready to check your roller bag, why not make your checked bag a size larger? Particularly since your carryon may be limited to 8 kilos. All the heavier gear can go in your checked bags. Streamlining doesn’t seem like a priority since you both have extra bags that need to be checked. If you want to skip the baggage claim and have one hand free, can you go with a carryon and a soft under-seat bag that has a band that slips over your carryon handle? One hand always free! We know that we all have different priorities. You may be renting cars or you may me backpacking. Different packing theories. One year, we actually bought a used car when we were going to be mainly in Europe. It gave us a lot of lodging leeway! We took car ferries instead of planes or just sold the car to switch continents.

This was pretty cool.. I think the items you choose were well thought out and well organised. The only thing is, is where are you going to put your dirty laundry.. I know you mentioned airbnbs, but that doesn’t mean you’ll always have access to laundry.. I like to keep a separate packing cube (yes I am on the packing cube band wagon, my cube of choice is the eagle brand) for dirty clothes, it’s usually the biggest cube I have, so it’s always empty at the beginning of my trip and then by the end takes us the most space. But it’s just super helpful for me to designate or sort my clothes, like dirty underwear (since mine are all black white and grey) or clothing I’ve spilled on or stained too badly to rewear.

We carry copies of our passports, which I've also scanned and have available online. My guy and I each have a copy of the other person's passport as well as our own just in case. Another thing we learned recently when a friend lost her phone in Greece is that phone numbers need to be written down. No one has those memorized any more. She was not able to call anyone or even log in to any of her social media or email because she didn't have her passwords memorized. So, scan your important documents to have online, print a copy and write down whatever is saved in your phone that would be disastrous to lose. I would love to see the remake of this now that you have been on the road for a few months!

Rolling tightly and neatly is key to packing .... you REALLY underfilled the cubes and by folding not neatly you can see how creased everything is .. you need to make items as flat as possible choose cubes that fit when they are turned on their side so you pack them like books in a bookcase not flat,that way you fit in SO much more.. folding is a terrible waste of space and cubes that are too big for the items in them and underfilled take up so much Volume in the case or bag! you could easily packed all swimwear and undies into one small cube. Compress all the non crease items... ziplock bags are perfect for compressing items .. It is super unhygienic to pack shoes uncovered, cheap disposable shower caps are perfect to cover shoes , pack shoes sole to sole and heel to toe. Jason you should try ziplock bags and roll clothes tightly and neatly in them, they are ideal for mens tops... i just packed my young adult son's case last week and he took 4 times the amount you took in a smaller case than yours just due to my packing ... hope the tips and hacks help

My camping towel has been handy in my travels, and it doubles as a light blanket in a pinch. Some travelers buy clothes that they can easily wash in a sink, and then they bring less. Was that something you contemplated? I recently switched to Bite toothpaste pills. They take up less space, one less liquid, better for the environment. That's my 2 cents. Love your bags!

Hey hey 👋. Yeah, we aren't hostel travelers 🤗. No shade towards people who are, just not our preference. But, you are right, we might bring a towel just to have for those random beach jaunts or whatnot! It's been added to our list 💪. Bite toothpaste pills?? INTERESTING. Will have to investigate. We had a funny moment with our flossers we use where I said to Caroline, "I think they should make dental floss but in a little travel case that's easy to carry." THAT IS DENTAL FLOSS 😂 😂 .

I second the Bites. They work really well, no mess for traveling, are light, and make lots of soft foam!

I love the toothpaste tablets, too! I also use the laundry and shampoo sheets in a tiny case so another 2 things that don’t need to go in the 3-1-1 bag. Also like taking a microfiber type camping towel as they’re small and dry fast!

I love your video thank you so much. What North face did you have packed in your jacket cube? I need something warm but compactable like that.

I've personally only traveled to Russia china and South Korea but I've never been asked to check my carry on roller bag. I've had them taken and checked because of lack of room specifically Russian airlines but did not have to pay for it. I would recommend having at least one change of clothes at least intimates in your backpack in case that happens and they lose your bag... You just never know. Love the video

The “Carry-on Only” caption on the thumbnail is entirely misleading. This is not a “Carry-On Only” packing video - there is no way you will be allowed to carry on both these bags on an international economy flight. The Peak backpack is far too large to qualify as a personal item. Fully packed out like that, you might even have difficulty getting it to fit in the luggage sizer for carry on items. Google the weight limits for carry on for the airline you plan to travel with. All of the international airlines we’ve flown with have adhered to their stated weight limits. Get yourself a luggage scale. I think you ought to plan on having to check your roller bags every time. I suggest taking your packed out Peak backpack and taking it to the airport to test if it fits in the carry on luggage sizer for your airline. The Topo daypack Caroline has packed looks like it would be a good size for a personal item. Why not pack your flight essentials in that? You don’t want to be holding up the other passengers trying to board whilst you dig things out of your backpack.

Love to see a capsule wardrobe video - yes, please! Also, out of curiosity, are you still wearing all of these clothes or are some packed, ready, and waiting - reserved for only for travel?
@WanderingAimfully
@WanderingAimfully 2 года назад
GREAT Q on if we're still wearing some of these clothes... YES! 🤗. We both separated parts of our closet to have our packing attire but some of the items we just always wear 🤷. Most of them are easy to replace should we wear through them before we leave. For me (Jason 👋), I'm actually intentionally wearing my shoes a bit more because I want to make sure they hold up well and are nicely broken in.

@WanderingAimfully

Good question! The Away suitcases have a dirty clothes bag built-in that we didn't show 🤗 . We've been on a 3-week trip recently and it worked perfectly to stuff all our dirty items in and re-pack our suitcase as we moved to a new destination. We also found doing laundry the day before we leave helped not have much dirty stuff (besides 1 pair of undies each 😉).

Here's a little trick I'm using to ditch the tripod, maybe that's helpful: I'm using a SmallRig Super Clamp & SmallRig Magic Arm with a Manfrotto quick release plate on top of the magic arm. That way, I can quickly mount the semi-heavy camera to any flat surface (chair, table, etc.) and use it as a tripod 😄 Works great & takes up way less space.

@WanderingAimfully 2 года назад
Great "hack" Max! 👌 We've learned from previous trips we really want photos of US out and about, which you can only really do with an actual tripod 😩. But, this is a solid idea, for sure and appreciate the thought.

So glad an umbrella was eventually mentioned, I think they are really useful and it’s a great idea to bring one! Imo, the Herschel wallet is not nearly enough space for all the coins most countries use - it looks too thin and flat.
@WanderingAimfully
@WanderingAimfully 2 года назад
Yeah, many folks said ditch the umbrella... um, no thanks 😂. Getting wet and having to scramble for an ☂️ is not on our wishlist for next year - haha. Good tip on the Herschel wallet. I (Jason here) actually think it can fit more coins that it looks, I just have enormous hands so it might look small (I'm 6'5 by the way 🙈). We'll find out though! Thanks for the comment, Caroline!
