The 26th North Carolina has the melancholy distinction of suffering more casualties during the battle of Gettysburg than any other Confederate regiment. Who were these men and why did they suffer so heavily during the fighting at Gettysburg. Join Gettysburg National Military Park Ranger Bill Hewitt and follow in the footsteps of these North Carolina Tar Heels across the fields of Pickett's Charge.

I loved Bill's approach going down to the individual. So much related loss. So many very sad stories.

I hope he was able to save as many of the soldiers of the South as he could! I had a great grandfather who fought the yankees in Louisiana and Arkansas, and had nephews and brother-in-laws who were in the 4th Texas Infantry Regiment,Co.K who fought the yankees from Barhamsville to Appomattox. Never will l turn my back on the sacrifices they withstood nor blood they lost. I am a son of the South. DEO VINDICE

My 4x great was a Sargent with the 26th and was killed. It’s kind of crazy that your ancestors very well may have been trying to save mine, or even been there for his final moments and here we are talking about it all this time later.

I'm not sure which ranger I think makes the best programs, Bill Hewitt or Matt Atkenson. We're so lucky to have them both!

Great Video and a tear for the 24th MI and the rest of the Iron Brigade where so many sacrificed their lives to delay the rebel army

Thank you for this presentation. Great stuff but I really appreciate the way you humanize what is going on down to the individual and how many people his one life affects back home.

My great great grandfather Colombus Tuttle, Romulus Tuttle's, brother was there as a private with the 26th. I think he is referred here as a nephew.

This ranger put a lot of work into this lecture & video. All the research for the 26th Nawth Carolina didn't just fall into his lap! He is as good as Ranger Matt with his talk, and doesn't come off like a automation. I dump the videos of the rangers who are there for just a paycheck, can't or won't even use emotion. In my way of thinking, maybe their ancestors hadn't stepped on the soil of this continent yet.

I never thought of large numbers of men from families fighting in same units. Entire families were probably wiped out

Why was our Great Great, Great Aunt Willie NAMED "Willie" in the first place?? For our Great Great Great Great UNCLE WILLIE Who went off to WAR in 1861 and NEVER RETURNS! My Great Grandmother's mother LOST HER ONLY BROTHER IN THE CIVIL WAR. Her father was left with only daughters and former slaves he couldn't pay. They MIGRATED to CALIFORNIA and our Great Grandmother moved to Colville, Washington with her husband Grandpa McDowell. He was only 34 when he died. He was Colville Sherriff.

I did like Mr. Hewitt's presentation the only thing I didn't agree with was when he was talking about the 51,000 and the Stadium comparison and saying that someone doesn't understand 51,000 even though people have been in groups of people much larger. I felt the statement was arrogant, rude, ignorant, dismissive, and condescending. How does he know if someone understands it or not. Other than that part it was a very good presentation.

I agree it's a great presentation and understand about that one line. I bristled a little bit when he said that. I get some people don't understand but don't tar everyone with that brush.
