The second biggest beginner mistake I see in Photography is that people spend too much time thinking about the subject in the photo, and not the other parts of the image and composition. That's what this video is about. Well, that and cake...
---
If you would like a print of any photo that appears in one of my videos, please email hello@jamespopsys.com with a screenshot of the image you would like, and the size you would like (A4 = £25 or A3 = £40). These prints are signed but not numbered. Thanks for your support :)
Thank you :)

James Popsys, it drives me crazy when somebody offers to take a picture for a couple then they put the couple in 80% of the photo, entirely focused on the couple, take the picture and miss the entire Hawaiian background, or anything in the background that would make that couple want the picture in the first place. I get it, most people aren't photographers but you would think there would be some sort of 'common understanding' in this regard.

my first thought on pic 4 (4:55) was: why is she sitting like this? She isn't a display dummy. ;) The reason why you took this photo was, I think, the great landscape. Why is she looking in in this position in the wrong direction? Just said: my first thought. My second thought: you are quite funny. I subscribed ;)

Tell a story with your picture... for the countless times I have heard or read that, the statement still makes zero sense to me. Just don't get what the person is trying to say with that, let alone with the picture that often accompanies it as an example. Still hanging in for the tips that do make sense though, thanks for those.

Lyme disease, Salt disease, these can only lead to one thing... Tequila Disease! This one requires no testing, however. The next morning, after a night's drinking, one can almost immediately tell if Tequila was involved! Keep in mind, the length of time required for recovery, is directly tied to the quality of Tequila consumed!

@lifetimesofamultiplemediam1003
Hmmmm… I kinda see what your saying, but I'm not convinced. The first image told more of a story, the second just looked posed. To me, if it was supposed to be a landscape shot, it would look better with no one posing in it. Not sure it's a good idea to have two subjects competing for attention in that way. Like you say, it's all subjective.

"Family" photos mean much more to the photographer than anyone else. There will be a story behind that moment in time. When I take photographs of runners out on the fells, I always include the landscape to remind them of where they were. And then … they crop the image to make it into a profile picture for FB. Drives me BONKERS!
@bennylofgren3208
@bennylofgren3208 6 лет назад
Steve Frith 😃 I can imagine! If you crop them yourself to fit the format of the FB header image instead, maybe they'll be less tempted to use the images as a profile pic and go for the header spot instead?

James, I know you love the UK. But feel free to join in the Philippines, the Maldives or India... it's warmer :D ps: I caught Lyme decease randomly. Take an antibiotic treatment for 2 weeks if your region has contaminated ticks - this is no joke :-/ It's standard treatment in Maine, USA when you are bitten - that's where they have the most ticks... Cheers!

0/10 no sheep, therefore completely unwatchable. 🐑🐑🐑 But seriously I love your motto, I'm going to try to remember this so much next time I shoot - and make my photos ABOUT something. I do have a tendency to spray and pray, makes me a bad photographer and an even worse professional assassin...I love Instagram but I see the same rocky arch landmark on my feed every day shot at the exact same angle by different people.

Thanks for this, and sorry to hear about the ticks. When I was visiting my relatives farm (in Cornwall) some years ago, a tick became embeded in my leg, and I was ill, on and off, for a year. Nothing really negative - intense fatigue at times, and a few other things. So, I hope that you do not suffer any ill effects.

The Emily pic at the beginning is not as bad as it could be. I sometimes refer to beginner portraits as 'all head and no feet'. The head of the subject is bang in the middle and therefore often bringing in difficult to deal with sky, making the faces dark.

Me again. I am not having a go when I say this, so I hope you do not take this comment in that way, but it struck me as ironic that right after you were talking about photographers' work on Instagram all looking like much of a muchness, you then promoted Squarespace - a company which produces websites which all look the same to me - 'anonymous', and generic looking (and, I am sure that they are quite useful, as you said). At the same time, I do understand the desire to be sponsored, and therefore, the need for promotion of sponsors in these videos. And I have to say that you sound very natural and honest and down-to-earth in what you said about Squarespace.

I just found your channel about a week ago, and I have to say - I love your style of video production (as well as your photography, of course). But you don’t just make a video talking about a photography subject. You make an entertaining video about a photography subject that also lets us get to know you through your sense of humor, too. Anyway - I’m very much a novice photographer (from a skill point of view) even though I’ve been taking photos since I took a summer class at college back in like…2005, or something. Im trying to get back into it and actually learn why my images are terrible. Lol. Thanks for the videos, your time, and your insight!

The first biggest mistake a photographer makes is thinking they have to walk up a mountain at sunset to get an interesting photo. For some this may be the case, I guess the world will never tire of seeing the same type of chocolate-box, jigsaw puzzle, image again and again, but there are talented photographers who can get much more interesting pictures just photographing their furniture at home.

OMG you should never (ever) smear any substance on ticks while they are still lodged in your skin. Blocking their breathing makes them puke their everything into the bite - recipe for infection. You don't want them to cough up any Lyme or worse: TBE... just pry them out with pincers (gently). If the head remains in the skin, it's not that much of a deal, but smearing anything on "set" ticks is a big no-no.
@oneeyedphotographer

Ferenc Zsolt Zopcsák I would rather seek professional advice than heed random RU-vidrs and Facebookers. I believe Western Australian government has some to search for. Include the following in your search terms site: wa.gov.au You could, of course, direct the search to the UK government, educational sites etc.
@cocteaufan
@cocteaufan 6 лет назад
As it happens Ferenc is 100% spot on. When I went up to scotland I researched a fair bit on tics and the concensus was indeed to not smear anything on them for the very reason Ferenc states. There are tic removal implements one can buy, quite cheaply, that do the required job. You have to press your skin down to get them above their head and then use a turning motion as you GENTLY pull them out. Ideally you don't want their heads to remain stuck.

For ticks I am reading you don't uses pastes, petroleum jelly, or any other "home remedies". You place tweezers near the head and gently pull them directly up from where they are attached. If any parts are still in there after you get them out you pick the pieces out with the tweezers. If any tiny pieces are still left in your skin you can't get with the tweezers, allow your skin to heal and eject them naturally. See a doctor an get tested for tick born diseases and get treated with the appropriate antibiotics as quickly as possible. They can be deadly and the key is to get them out of you as quickly as possible upon detection so they stop injecting you with their saliva while feeding, and get diagnosed and treated immediately for any diseases. Don't play with them... just get those little f&uckers out of you immediately.
@jettysplash
@jettysplash 5 лет назад
And I am also reading, before hiking you should treat your clothing with Permethrin. Ticks attack from the ground and crawl up your leg. I read spraying a Permethrin "clothing spray" product on your boots, socks, and pants will repel or kill ticks upon contact.
