The 3 Buckingham Nicks Rhiannons that were performed in Alabama... in order of performance

The first one has been said to be from 1974 but not totally sure. I believe they are all from January of 1975. Buckingham Nicks still had tour dates after the call to join Fleetwood Mac. They finished the tour then went into the studio to record Fleetwood Mac (The White Album).

I also was at those shows. Also saw them at the popular nightclub in Southside right after the Buckingham Nicks album was released. I tried to look like Stevie even down to the perm. Wish I could have sang like her. What a great time to be alive back then! Young, carefree and great music!

So interesting to hear this early version. Lindsey had the opening riff but had yet to integrate it into the verses. And if anyone still doubts the superiority of the Fleetwood/McVie rhythm section listen to this, then take in the much more supple, mysterious, and memorable studio version. It is true what they say, the Mac needed fresh blood at this time...desperately, and B/N needed the band's superior muscle behind their melodies.

Good points, but I really love the raw energy of these versions. Imagine hearing these versions as a teenager in Alabama in the 1970's. Buckingham Nicks took Alabama by storm in 1974\75 and when heard they were joining Fleetwood Mac we were both happy and sad. Happy that they were moving up to a better musical climate, but sad that this unique chemistry and another Buckingham\Nicks album would not be. But having just witnessed Jimmy Page leaving the Yardbirds to form Led Zeppelin, we knew something special was about to happen. And so it did.

True, but these earlier versions are still pretty kickass in their own rite. I love the way they originally sang the chorus, and some of the stuff Lindsey was doing on guitar

Saw them in Tuscaloosa. Actually, I saw Lindsey play with a friend of mine at between races at a swim meet in near Sacramento California in 1965. Lindsey would play guitar to relax between races, he didn't care much for competitive swimming, his brother Greg, went on to win an Olympic Silver Medal in the 200 individual medley in the 1968 Mexico Summer Olympics. But Lindsey and my friend Paul jammed some folk tunes and he and Paul also worked on some songs that [9 years later] I realized were on the Buckingham Nicks album. The one I remember best was "Don't Let Me Down Again" which also was huge FM hit in the major Alabama cities. All the swimmers would request their music on their local FM stations. It was crazy.

That's so cool to hear. Buckingham Knicks is significantly underrated and still baffling that album didn't go big. Guess another path was in store for them.

To support the Buckingham Nicks album, these 2 played at Bham, Al's, Municipal(now Boutwell) Auditorium. Maybe 1973 or 1974 in January. I wasn't old enough to even drive, a friends dad took about 3 or 4 of us. Beyond magic. I was hooked on "Frozen Love" at the time. Been hooked ever since. Spectacular.

steven spike I am told by a good friend that her older sister was their neighbor in Birmingham while they were touring the Southeast promoting that album. That album was quite popular here in the South but not so much in other parts of the country. Not sure why but have been told that several large FM stations across the South gave it quite a bit of airplay. Not sure that they go back quite that far but I know that I've kicked back late on more than one night as a teenager and listened to (here's a name from the past) K99 play that album thru from start to finish.
@kyriljordanov2086
@kyriljordanov2086 6 лет назад
polecatrecords Yes, I have often thought the same thing, being from Jackson, Mississippi. This was crazy popular in the deep South long before the rest of America even heard of them. Having lived all over North America and In Europe, I can actually see why they were so popular down South, but I can't explain it in words. I suppose it's just one of those things only Southerners can understand.

Sorry to be chiming in late here, but my mom told me once that she remembered Crying In The Night on a radio station in central Florida in the early 70s. She wasn't a (later on) fan of Stevie's, but she did like Fleetwood Mac. She remembered it when I was playing a record of Buckingham Nicks I bought in the late 90s...she did not have a clue it was THEM! Lol

They always play it fast. I have seen them every concert since 77 and they change it around. She doesn't like to sing it the same way every concert. Now she sings so slow the band can hardly keep up. She forgets her words and Neil takes the high parts she can't do anymore. She's in her 70's and she is still the Queen!

Thanks for sharing. 👍 I have a copy of one of The final Birmingham Alabama concerts signed by the drummer. I think he sounds just as great as the rest of them at the time. And all of them are REALLY good. And he and 2 others drummed on the album. All 3 good. One was Elvis drummer Ronnie Tutt. This is just one song, the whole concert sounds quite amazing. They said it was a tough crowd. Lindsey had feedback a few times from his guitar. Stevie said, wow, theres so many people! LOL. YES, pretty amazing stuff right here. 👍😊 Cheers to the rhythm section also. 😉

Wow. You can hear how they are learning and improving as they go. The chorus in the first song was terrible as was the rhythm section and tempo. They were too fast in the second but the chorus improved although Nick's voice started sounding strained and the tempo was still too fast. In the last, the tempo was slowed and the drums weren't overly prominent but the vocals really improved. The chorus was more subdued and sung more thoughtfully (Nicks was screaming the chorus in the first performance). What an improvement overall when they joined a seasoned band like Fleetwood Mac. Took off the roughness around the edges and Nicks became much more confident in her stage presence.

WJLN in Birmingham, our first progressive FM rock station, broke Buckingham Nicks with Frozen Love getting heavy airplay due to listener response and their own love of the album. I remember it well as I was about 14-years old when this was playing out because I was a big fan of WJLN - from the time they only broadcast progressive rock with the DJ known as "Father Tree" from midnight to sunrise where it changed to soul and rhythm and blues for the daytime and early evening hours. It's a real shame the Buckingham Nicks album has never been re-released on CD or streaming.

I wonder who convinced her to change master to lover. She also also sings 'million year's' live, the exception being on the original white album. So she kept part of the original song but gave up the other. So much more energy live but the studio version, while subdued, is great. Also nice to hear McVie in the background on the studio version.
