I have ADHD and so it's often extremely difficult for me to follow lessons to completion, because I get lost easily. I also find that most teachers talk about the philosophy rather than giving practical explanations, so I completely lose interest and I get lost even more. Every time I come to your videos, I feel like the fog clears and I can completely follow your instruction from start to finish because you explain things so well and in interesting ways. Thank you so much!!! Your lessons have made my learning journey SO much less frustrating and it's actually helped me to start to enjoy practicing, now that I'm understanding things better and feeling less like a failure.
Oh my god same!! I’m a freshman majoring in animation and was dual diagnosed with adhd and ocd last year. Similar to you, I get overwhelmed quite easily and can get so caught up in the learning that it just confuses me. I’ve tried so many methods for figure drawing and anatomy, but nothing really stuck until I found this channel. Something about this exact technique is perfect for my attention level. I’ve never felt more excited to draw bodies haha
I thought I had to be born with talent to draw; but, Love Life Drawing proved me wrong. Kenzo is an awesome teacher! I am looooooving this challenge. I am learning so much. Thank you!!!
"Getting really good at really simple ideas" - a great tagline for Love Life Drawing! This is what I would be working on. And Fresh Eyes challenge is an apt platform to begin seeing the simple and essential in life drawing. I am amazed Kenzo at how you present the essence of the process with such simple, clear and powerful steps. Fresh eyes challenge has been an eye opener. Thanks a lot Kenzo. Looking forward to the rest of the challenge. And cheers to Lucy for rescuing the wood man and bringing him back on the scene!!!!
This challenge is excellent. The 2D part has been a huge breakthrough for me. Looking forward to applying all this on the 3D poses, twisted. I’ve told several friends about this course and encouraged them to take it Kenzo is such a clear and encouraging teacher!
Great video! I had a good chuckle at the egg squashing. (For real though, using an egg as a rib cage stand in is a great idea) Enjoying the challenge so far, thank you so much for the top quality instructions.
Fun video, Kenzo - and the challenge is probably the best exploration of the big simple ideas of the figure I've come across so far. Looking forward to the second half!
This challenge series has been outstanding. Art fundamentals can be esoteric and confusing to the layman, but you've explained them in an easy to understand manner and anyone that puts time into applying them will see big improvements. Great work Kenzo, hope you're doing well!
Great video Kenzo. Congratulations for both the student who have made massive improvements and for you that taught him into the right direction. What I find interesting about more spherical forms is that they generally make the figure more organic. And they are excellent for drawing faster. And that customized form for the pelvis is very good and it's not that hard to use. I've seen some great comic book artists like David Finch and John Buscema using that and they recommend it a lot in their videos and books (respectively). Personally I like using other forms when drawing from imagination though. I think boxy and cylindric forms works better when putting things in perspective, specially when doing more complex angles and such. The thing about these forms is that the corners are much more clear than spheres, and as such, it's much easier to measure proportions and the perspectiva. This is very handy when drawing things by your own imagination. Plenty of animators use these forms in conjunction with triangular shapes and the peculiar "pillow shape" which teachers such as Kevin Chen and Ron Lemen use extensively. Anyway, just telling my trashy personal opinion here lol.
Hi Kenzo, very good video as always, it's fun to learn with you. Now to draw, I really want this second part. Thanks (I'm glad your throat is getting better).
I wasn’t understand most of this principles, but with your videos I feel progressive and enjoy the process with more power. It’s was hard for me when I am studying at the art university, but teachers aren’t explaining the simple ideas of figure drawing and waiting big results from pupils. Thanks for this big work for us ❤
That intro was so funny when you put the egg in the clamp I was like, "omg is he really gunna do it?" and you did lol Okay time to actually watch this video
Yes, please let her know the laughing mannequin was a neat touch of comedy 🤣 Day six is the 3D side? This is where structure guy from two videos ago shines, lolz!
I just want to draw a good egg, and add two more for the forearms and serve that on open pelvis pants standing on solid feet! Thank you for helping me learn to draw - really mean That!
Hello, Kenzo! Thank you for this very useful video!! I will watch it again and again to learn from it😃 By the way, the grade of the funny scenes is getting higher and higher, I'm laughing so hard☆. Thanks a lot for the funny scenes, it makes me enjoy studying drawing more and more!
Regarding the shoulders, just imagine the shoulder bone being wrapped at edge of a cape, which is a combo of pectoral, latissimus and deltoid.. As you raised the arm, you'd definitely see the 'inside' of the cape. You can refer to Loomis or Reilly method for more info.
In this tutorial, we cover everything we are going to work in days 6-10 of the Fresh Eyes challenge! We can describe it all in about 10 minutes, but it'll take plenty of targeted and sequenced practice to get confident with these skills. If you haven't already, join us in the challenge with the link in the description! Shout out to my wife Lucy for the awesome stop motion animation of woody the awful mannequin!
Hey man, have you ever thought about making a discord community or something? I love your content it feels so genuine, would love a place where a bunch of us amatures could get together talk about each others work and such.
You've just made an amazing drawing tutorial buddy! Well done, and keep up the good work 👏 I am also an artist 🎨 Check my drawing skills out! Peace and love to you all.😃👍
I'm so glad that I've joined the challenge. I feel like I can see better the angles and relationships between different body parts. I'm hyped to start drawing more 3D shapes. To everyone who is reading this comment, I recommend starting this challenge whenever you can C:
Fair fair I just rebooted a PC and I need to make a new hotmail might try this out with this new hotmail. (trying to keep my main hotmail free now :P) But I think it look promesing I guess we will see. Any way this seem quite interesting again like the mini puzzle structure for the first one I think that the type of thing that could be quite interesting to just get the basic than you can go up in challenge but yah. I don't actually know how to start a drawing without ref that why am trying to get better at understanding this because if I can understand how posse work may be I will be able to just do the pose than try to had to it after that. Ref is always nice but it kinda get annoying whene you try to draw your Owen stuff but always need to start form ref always. like (it kinda make sense you need to start form some data it just that one is in your head and the other is outside of it but... still kinda annoying none the less whene you don't got the data to do it in your head and your just trying to do a simple thing. SORRY FOR THE BAD ENGLISH Also am interested for the muscle and stuff too (like the belly parth it easy to get wrong for exemple like Just a curve in work but it look weird uncanny alot of time :) )
good idea to work on the simples shapes, oval for rib, circle for cranium and borats udnerpants for pelvis... whats gonna be the price for the course? sounds exciting!
I really enjoy the humor you throw in here. Looks like some, like the mannequin animation, took a bit to set, but I think it helps what you are teaching stick in my mind. I need to really remember your comment about getting good at them simple things rather than rushing to having a collection of complex ideas that I can't attach to a good foundation.
Thanks! My wife Lucy animated the mannequin - she loves stop motion. Yeah i actually find it easier to learn more complicated stuff at a surface level than to learn basics at a deeper intuitive level. so it's really tempting to just add more complexity, but the thing that works is drilling fundamentals
Great work Kenzo! I had seen multiple tutorials from other sources but I found yours to be the best. It can be seen you have put in a lot of work to deconstruct it to this level for amateurs. Really appreciate you sharing your craft.
For digital 3D models, Scott Breton's 3D models on sketchfab are free and excellent. The anatomy figure i was holding is one my mum bought online somewhere, i will check where
Thanks to this challenge, I'm improving day by day. I'm glad to be following this, and I'm so thankful to you. Also I would like to point out that the printable model of the day one in the community has the filename swapped between male and female. The hyperlink for male downloads a model with female filename, but the hips are from male. When you download female, you get a model with male filename, but the hips are from a female. (If I'm not wrong). I just wanted to point this out just in case someone does not spot the situation and maybe gets confused!
I am so excited to start the 2nd part, which I feel will be more fun than the 2D exercises! Thank you so much, Kenzo for your great efforts, I really appreciate it.
Still working through Fresh Eyes for the first time, and surprised at how well you explain concepts I struggled with figuring out all the way through college. And simply being so encouraging about practice as a part of our journeys helps so much too. Thanks Kenzo!
This has been extremely helpful to me. I'm dealing with cartoon characters for animation. As I'm sure you're aware, it's very important to have, at the very least, a rudimentary knowledge of how anatomy affects moment and body shape. Richard Williams (from Roger Rabbit fame) encourages animators to study life drawing. While my characters are very simple designs, basing their body movement on the "pelvis pants" and rig cage relationship helps them look more natural in their movement.
This is an exceptionally well presented video!! It's easy to grasp the concepts that I have been struggling with for a long time now. Thank you so much for posting this excellent course!!!
This challenge project has already ended but I am following close behind. Have just recently registered on the website and now I am on "day 6". My skills are already improving. Thank you very much for your wonderful work! ♡
Thank you for making this challenge! On day 5 currently and this way of approaching the figure really seems to work for me, whereas before i felt i was reaching into the dark and hope and see what sticks. It is also very digestible,, still challenging without it being too overwhelming. Looking forward to tacling the 3D forms!
For anyone having trouble with this like I did, try a box shape for the torso and pelvis. the egg shape was difficult to turn in my head so a box does the trick.and then you can add the egg inside the box if you want
im so glad that youve been going slowly, most videos have really fast paces, this one i was able to draw while listening and understanding what you say
Thank you Kenzo for this challenge! I fell I'm finally starting to give proportion, structure and gesture to my figures. And It's amazing it started with 2D exercises! I'm still on day 6 and keep practicing. Thank you man! Wish you best!
Kenzo. Great video to introduce the second part of the Fresh Eyes Challenge which I’m really enjoying and finding really eye opening. Thank you very much.
