That version of Vinnie playing ‘You gotta try’ is one of my all time favourite Vinnie performances. The sound, his power and feel, everything about it is killer. Another great version on the album Basie and Beyond, again with Vinnie on the kit.

The Allan Holdsworth 'Secrets' album. I have all the others too! The Baked Potato 1 and 2 is AWESOME!!!! Fantastic job by the way. Makes me realize.... I need to get back into reading and put my chops to good use besides improvising.... I'm enjoying your videos and being introduced to some modern jazz drummers I don't know who aren't Nate Smith and Marcus Gilmore... ✌

Check out his playing on the album called "Nghtwalker" by Gino Vannelli. I believe it was recorded in 1981. He used Jeff Picaros drums on the session because he had his drum set in another studio recording another album at the same. Not too many people are hip to this album by Gino with Vinnie playing drums. If your a Vinnie fan do yourself a favor and check it out

Thanks for the video & the transcriptions. They are indeed awesome. Another aspect of Vinnie's playing is the solid groove work he has done with other artists. My personal favorite, is his work with Jennifer Warnes on Famous Blue Raincoat & The Hunter. His playing on those albums is salted with some tasty 2-beat fills that fit perfectly with the music, while also sounding somewhat unexpected through his orchestration on the set.

You want one of the best Vinnie recordings ever.........Buell Neidlinger Quartet, Big Drum. Live album with maybe 50 people in the audience. Vinnie's playing is inspired as are the tunes. Loosey goosey but with a framework. I asked VC about it and he said there was minimal rehearsing and minimal microphone usage. It's a fabulous recording!!

Yes plus 1 on that! Another one worth checking out is JK Kleutgens “Cavemen” album. Lots of great Vinnie moments on that album. But for me my favorites would be the 1st 3 John patitucci albums, specially the track “Spaceships” on the Sketchbook album, and of course Eric Marienthal’s Crossroads album. Cheers!

Working out Vinnie & Weckl licks is infectious, I've spent my whole life doing this, but there does and will come a time where it's you, yourself, your sound & vocab that needs the attention, after all there is only 1 Vinnie, 1 Weckl. However, taking the time to listen, transcribe & program is extremely beneficial in the learning process. I have many clinics bootlegs of Vinnie performing the Bruce Lee track, it's almost as if the track was written for one of Bruce Lee's fight scenes, the two would compliment one another perfectly. I also have all the Baked Potato Gigs, in fact I'm so close to owning everything Vinnie & Weckl have ever performed on starting way way back in the 70's, then just as I think I have it all another recording pops up, I love it. I have to say 80/20, choosing Vinnie as a Master to study, you cannot go wrong. Kind Regards.

having watched so many instructional/transcription videos for various instruments, I really appreciate how efficient this video is....you play the original clip, then play along with it once at speed, and then play through it once slower. what some channels do (maybe it's helpful for some), that is so hard to watch (maybe this is more a problem on guitar videos) is where they play one note at a time and stop to tell you what every. single. note. is... as they go along, and it's sooooo slow and drawn out that the videos end up being like 25 minutes long. I like your teaching style much better ! thanks very much, off to go practice this now !

I freakin love your videos. You just might me the most unpretentious drummer I have ever watched. I was a hot mess with jazz... I had a FANTASTIC teacher, but he was unable to get me clued in for whatever reason. Had I had a resource like yours when I was a kid in the 80's learning my craft, I think I might be in a very different place with drumming today...

Awesome work, as usual. I´ve always found insane Vinnie´s playing on Seven Days, in that studio video, on Sting´s house. The only part where he plays differently from the record. ("Seven days, will quickly go...") Perhaps, on a second review, you could explain that. Great channel, man,

Heh, I'm a major Vinnie fan but 2 of these I hadn't heard yet. Absolutely killer stuff, thanks for the explanation - I'll have something to practice for a while 😁 Another underrated Vinnie fill that I also didn't see mentioned here is in Nik Kershaw's Don't Ask Me (at 3:14). It's the most off-kilter fill I've ever heard in a mainstream recording, and yet it still propels the song forward. Genius stuff.

Hey man, I think you've done a fantastic job transcribing Vinnie's performances and playing them back. However, I feel I need to point some things out here. I think you missed out on several opportunities here. First of all, those are not "licks". I can bet you a million bucks that Vinnie didn't spend hours coming up those particular phrases to then look for a place to show them off. He likely wouldn't recall what he played if you were to ask him straight after the performance. "Who cares?" he would tell you. He came up with them on the spot, and they could have been a million other phrases he could have played, and they would have sounded just as great. As is usually the case, it is not about WHAT is played, but WHY it is played. I've heard Vinnie play just an extra kick drum note or a lonely splash cymbal to a significant effect. Nothing technically impressive, but so musically effective. It is all about the context and WHY it is played at a particular spot. You could have first looked at and explained what made those phrases sound impressive to you. What was going on musically around him and just before he played them? Was there something unusual about them, like a polyrhythm or particular note grouping that sounded awesome when played against the current time signature and the musical backdrop? Where in the songs was he and why did he play them? What effect does it have on a listener? What subdivisions was he playing? Do they match the feel of the songs or go against them? To what effect? Then you could have looked at the technical side of things and what techniques one has to develop in order not just to play such phrases, but to come up with their own, right on the spot. Particular rudiments? Hand to foot co-ordination? Accenting off beats? Just blindly transcribing, playing, or spending hours pulling off a transcribed phrase in a vacuum that someone came up with on the spot teaches nothing without analyzing the context. Perhaps do a part 2 video of those same phrases addressing those points. There is a treasure trove of valuable information that could be extracted from those examples, but there were overlooked entirely. Be well, stay safe. Respect!

Great vid. Interesting in the last lick how you play R rrll R rrll like a paradiddle diddle without the second note as opposed to 5 strokes in the "normal" way. Be nice to hear you talk about why to pick which stickings, if you're interested - if it sounds good, it is good after all. :)

You should have included the intro lick to the Allan Holdsworth song "Spokes". That lick sound like he has 3 arms the way he moves it around the kit. And it's not even difficult, it's just phrased differently and moved all over the kit that's confusing.
