Life changing. I stumbled on to your method less than a week ago. I was totally "done with" my 6 month old Belgian Malinos - especially after she nipped a lady at the store. Nothing I had tried before seemed to work, and I believe that it it was me who was not the leader I should have been- that lead us to that day. In a very short time, we have come so far. Thank you.

Leslie, I totally understand. I have one (mixed with GSD). I'm tough, clear and consistent - yet this breed is so stubborn and absolutely determined to be pack leader. It's a 24/7 challenge, and if you give them an inch, they take a mile. He's a true superdog. I love him dearly, but it's the toughest job I've ever done. He's a little more than a year old now and still tries to go on "his own mission" if he thinks he can.

@@barbarawarren9443 My Ruby is so sweet (in the Malinos sour kind of way) I received her from a foster when she was 2 1/2 weeks old, when mom stopped nursing the whole litter and the litter of 9 (8 girls and 1 boy) became too much for the foster to handle. So our bond is tight. And she is far from perfect- but compared to her litter mates ( that are scattered throughout my neighborhood) she is the best behaved out of all, so far. That sounds bias, but we see them out and about and at the park- and watching the behavior problems of the others so far- I'm lucky., For sure. Ruby and I are learning together, and if something doesn't work- we find something that does. But as she gets bigger- she gets bolder, and my expectations are set, there are something's I will not accept from her or either of my other 2 dogs- and #1 is biting. I think there is a time and place for everything- and I have tolerance for some nipping, mouthing or what I have come to call "tooth hugs"- in certain situations - like rough play or tugging - but there are limits as well. With kids or people are wanting to pet her- I Never ever, ever , no exceptions. And in those public situations- I make sure that I make control of the situation- and prepare my dog, I prepare my self and I will control a situation and and im ready for anything- if I am not comfortable , then will not allow contact. However- I realized that I must also prepare for the situations that are beyond my control as well. Like when Ruby bit the lady. And honestly I'm torn this time- between being angry at Ruby or more angry and less sympathetic to the grown adult- who reaches out and pets a dog she doesn't know, but biting in this situation is against my expectations. Regardless, she got bit, nothing too serious, didn't break the skin. I think she was more shocked than hurt, and she kinda started to lecture me about not bringing such a "vicious" dog out in public or training her better. My response to her was- "do you usually touch dogs you don't know? Because I don't, my kids don't, I have never ever touched a dog without ever asking the owner first. She did say- that she should have asked and she should have known better. Whom ever is at fault- biting is unacceptable, and lead me here. And I have become a confident leader.
@barbarawarren9443
@barbarawarren9443 Год назад
@@leslieplummer1200 Hi Leslie. I loved your response. I 100% agree that lady should never have reached out to pet your Ruby without asking. It sounds like Ruby is better socialized than my Kokoro is yet, so you never expected it either. They're serious working dogs, so I imagine we'll always have to be cautious, no matter how well trained we think they are. Thank God it didn't break the skin when Ruby corrected the bold, entitled lady. I hope she learned a lesson. I'm not giving up either and every day I work with this amazing but hard-headed fellow. Sending you lots of love, patience and persistence in your role as "pack leader." ❤ 🌹 ❤
@leslieplummer1200
@leslieplummer1200 Год назад
@@barbarawarren9443 I also firmly believe that dogs can read people faster and better than people can. So it could have been that Ruby didn't like, trust or some other way not comfortable with her and thats why she got bit. I also have a very dominant min-pin female, and on a few occasions She has not liked a guest or visiter, right off the bat. And I trust her gut. "If my dog don't like you- then you are not welcome at my home"

Honestly Joel, your videos on leash reactivity has changed our life. We have the kindest 11 month old female black Lab ever. But she’s a real puller and is also reactive towards cars. I’ve been using positive reinforcement methods for months, and it simply hasn’t worked. She flips out and sprint towards the cars. After starting your methods (doorway method and the proactive stops with the leash pops, 80/20), she has become a dream. We use a little more treats than you as of right now, but she’s slowly getting to where we want her. She’s more engaged, more connected and a LOT calmer on our walks. She still has some fear towards the cars, but it’s getting better. She sure seems to enjoy her walks a lot more too. We give here room to do sniffing, peeing and pooping. But especially when we’re walking next to roads with heavy traffic we have to put her next to us. And then she’ll stay there, and she’ll stop when I do a proactive stop. I’ve seen a lot of haters on Reddit, and honestly I don’t understand. Your methods aren’t at all cruel. The 80/20 method says it all. The dog has 80 % of the correction, and we have 20. That’s not cruel at all. It helps them pop out of whatever they’re focussing on, and focus on us instead. Thanks so much, Joel. For showing us how to deal with stuff like that, and how to get a balanced, happy dog.

I’ve recently been using your techniques with my dog. My dog is reactive when on a leash. He is a rescue. He’s been doing so much better the past 2 weeks. Decided to take my dog out in public and walk with him. Had to correct him twice and some lady pulled up on me and accused me of animal abuse because I gently popped his leash. My dog is 60 lbs and reactive. He does not take treats. I was so confused and it kind of made me feel horrible inside. It made me mad because I’ve been working hard with him. Some people just don’t understand until they’re actually in this kind of situation. Just because your dog is treat trained doesn’t mean they are well behaved.

Hi, i have a question; i always been told by the force free guys to not use leash corrections because they cause harm to dog's neck. Have you ever seen any cases where a dog's neck was injured by ordinary leash corrections?
@miamalone2398
@miamalone2398 Год назад
@@robin212212I think it’s where it’s positioned. As you see in the video, the thin collar on the dog is way up behind the ears. If it’s lower to where the red collar is, it can potentially hurt their trachea and neck. In addition, if a heavy tank vs a small “pop” with a wrist flick rather than using your whole arm to yank, it can make it worse.

Yes. Just walked my 4 month old pup for the first time on lead. He began with the pull. Immediately took a sharp reverse and then circle into the dog and then opposite circle. Within a few minutes I added a sit at stops. With the sit he got lots of praise and pets. Then regular walking with lots of turns, fast, regular speed. By the time we were back at our gate he was sitting at stops and watching his unpredictable owner.

Doing that helped a lot, I had a tight leash but wasnt getting dragged. Thay being said, I could never get a loose leash until I tried this method. I got him walking loose leash in one session. Its amazing and it works. I'm so glad I found your channel. I work with dogs every day at a daycare (and train parrots twice a week at a parrot rescue) and this is what I've been looking for. I don't like aversive methods and I've seen it mess dogs up. I like purely positive but sometimes you don't get the time to spend with them to make it work cuz purely positive takes a very very long time. These methods aren't aversive and aren't mean but they work because that's how dogs work. Thanks for sharing all your info with the world!!

I'm thinking the dynamic could easily be unwound, by doing an activity that the dog considers a game, and where it relies on your lead. Such as running a dog course, throwing a ball in water, or maybe going hunting. In those settings the activities require you to use your compassion for the pets differently. The dogs will enjoy because it feels empowering to them to go conquer some new skillsets. And they will look to you for leadership corrections and firm commands. Kind of like putting vitamins in winegums :P
@SJane3
@SJane3 Год назад
@Lifeisawheelie having my dog be able to do all those things would be amazing for him! Unfortunately, I'm dealing with a very dog reactive dog, so I don't trust him very well off leash yet. I have learned however, from these videos and the community here, that I have to be more of the boss for sure. So I appreciate the additional tips to help get that message across to him too! Not sure about other dogs, but I have the kind of dog who literally only takes me serious when he has a leash and collar on. It's like work mode for him, so getting him to focus off-leash is like trying to tell a toddler to take a nap... he simply won't do it! Hahaha

Beckman's training methods are the best fix for many dogs with behavioural problems or learned bad habits and mannerisms. In his sessions he not only focus's on the dogs behaviour, but also the owners behaviour and the psychology of the relationship between the owner and dog. Every action, gets a reaction. Change the owners action and the dogs reaction will change. The same applies if the owner changes their reaction to their dogs actions. In most cases, the dog is not the responsible for how it acts, what negative behaviour has been learned, the responsibility is on how the owner acts with the dog and control it. Beckman's methods perfectly demonstrate how for many dogs, it is learned negative behaviour, but this behaviour can be altered and controlled by using his methods and understanding owner/dog psychology.

Really appreciate you putting this information out into the public domain as it's incredibly challenging to find people who share your common sense, no-nonsense approach with dogs over here in England. When I tell people my pup ignores treats on walks, I'm only ever met with blank faces, or just get told that I "haven't found the right treat yet" - and I have cycled through just about everything. With your method I've made great progress with my high-drive Shiba Inu puppy (now approaching 9 months old) and have solid loose-leash walking with him in low-medium distraction environments, after many months of painful zero focus harness walking with him stopping, pulling and everything in between.

I've always been able to teach dogs to walk nice on a leash by doing this. Treats no - but "good dog", yes. Don't even have to give a big jerk. I just turn quick and walk the other direction, away from where they're looking, and they get a sharp pull from that. I almost get dizzy from all this, but the dogs pick it up quickly and seem to enjoy the challenge. By turning into the dog, they learn to walk a little behind you - "heel". I taught my nervous german shepherd to "pass on by" on a leash, when going by distractions, people, barking dogs, etc. I wish I had that knack for training the other things! But it's nice to have something down.

Thank you so much for your videos. I just started using this method. The one thing I'm struggling with is that my dog will only go poop while on a walk. He will not go in our backyard. So then our walks become him needing to sniff and do his business. Now he doesn't have to pull to do this and we are working on this but the sniffing at times becomes more important to him than him paying attention to me.

After one of your previous videos I finally decided to give a gentle leader a try. Gotta admit it was one of the best advice I got from RU-vid videos on any subject, ever. My 1-year old border collie went from 200% emotions on a walk to like 50% and I can finally work with him on heel and loose leash walking. It's gonna take a long time since he's super stubborn type but the difference is already there. Thank you.

Thank you for this training information. My dog is amazing and easy to train…when there are limited distractions. I’m going to start this today!

This is perfect. I have tried with my 10 month old and he starts jumping and nipping so he throws me a curve ball there though. This one is a very smart dog too, a beauty.

I love this video. I have used something simular to train horses for years. Have trained stallions to walk calmly to a mare he is breeding. On a lead. I can use this to make sure a stallion was paying attention to me and not to get overly excited. While we are approaching a mare in season.

This is brilliant. Can't wait to try it out with my dogs. I finally picked up a gentle leader for my pitbull yesterday. It makes a world of a difference, wish I had tried it sooner. Thank you so much for everything that you do!

@@LimitlessJayson I got mine from PetSmart for $20! My pittie was never much of a puller, but the environment is always more interesting than I am. It has been difficult getting him to check in with me and listen to commands. He is much more aware of the gentle leader and I have so much more control. He can't ignore a gentle leader like he can a flat collar... game changer. TMI but I got him as a puppy not knowing his breed... Embark DNA Test revealed 100% American Pit Bull Terrier. I already had two cats. He will not leave them alone! Currently using the gentle leader/leash pressure in the house to correct and stop him from chasing them. Before the GL, he would just back up and keep his eyes on the cat, not paying attention to me at all and contining to pull in the direction he wants to go. He can't do that when I'm turning his whole head! I'm seeing results after just two short sessions of that.

@@SamFarwell this is really interesting stuff! thank you! i also recently purchased a DNA kit for my dog but from a different site… i’m waiting for it to come in the mail! i suspect mine is a rottweiler shepard mix but i’m super excited to learn about my boys origins! thank you so much for your input & comment!

I watched your video on teaching your dog to come the other day. I followed the instructions carefully, and just now I noticed that Bruno, my American Akita was asleep by the door. I called " Bruno;Come", from behind him and he woke up, looked for where I was, and came straight over to my hand signal. I was prepared for him to take a moment to wake up, he did so well. I will be working on this one, too.

First you fixed my big doodle pup yanking me around on the leash by showing the low popping correction. Now she’s on a loose leash but out front and bumping into my leg. Tomorrow I start working on the 180’s with step-in-front and random direction changes. By next week I’ll be working on reactivity to the dogs we meet along the way. You are charting my path to joy and a deeper relationship built on my loving leadership. For all the good things you do for so many, I wish you and your beautiful family unbounded success and happiness.
