Hey what's up guys OSG here with a video that has been long overdue and its one that has been really difficult as being a C64 owner my judgement will always be clouded by heaps of nostalgia. I have previously done a Best 30 C64 games list but that list was definitely driven by nostalgia, especially in the ordering but in today's video im putting all that to one side and making a list of the truly best 30 C64 games ever made not driven by nostalgia and these are all games that I would pick up and play today even if I'd never owned a C64

This video is an education in just how awesome the C64 was and still is today with the homebrew scene. Thank you pal for supporting me with this video it means a lot and well done on such a great collection of games. Great video! The C64 was the system I had growing up, so it's super cool to see so many videos chronicling the games...a lot of which I've never heard of. :) That just shows how many games were made for this thing! And on a side note...it looks like Ultimate Wizard is basically a reskin of Jumpman. XD Sound effects and all!

Great list. I'd have included one of the Leader board golf games. It started the power and snap control method that is still being used in golf games. For a system as limited as the C64 they are really good games. I was hooked on them as a kid and still occasionally play them today.
@hazy33
@hazy33 Год назад
Definitely. World Class Leaderboard against my best friend was probably the game we played the most. Introduced trees and bunkers over the weird islands of grass in water of the first so the courses finally felt like they could be real.
@andyhodgson7692
@andyhodgson7692 Год назад
@@hazy33 yes indeed 😁. The introduction of the punch shot was good too and the added challenge on the hardest level when the putting gauge disappears. I have the tape version of World Class Leaderboard where every hole loads separately taking around 10 seconds to load each hole. The original Leaderboard game with the islands wasn't quite as good but one thing that was mighty impressive is that it's 72 holes in a single load.

I grew up with a C64 and it's an absolute delight seeing how so many amazing games are being developed for it right now, some of them showing that the C64 could do so much more than we ever imagined. the only true limitation or problem I see with the C64 is that it only uses one button. but a new controller with remapped keys into the buttons could solve that. I hope new developers start using that resource.
@oldstylegaming
@oldstylegaming Год назад
Thats already a thing mate, ojbeez for one makes custom joysticks where a button can be mapped to up for jump
@TRX303
@TRX303 4 месяца назад
Actually you can add (at least) two more individual fire buttons (via the potentiometer lines). These have been used in some software already back in the commercial days of the C64, for example for the C64 mouse and a few games too (mostly 2 buttons there). Today there are 2 button patches for a number of classic games, but some of the more recent releases support up to 3 buttons from the start (like e. g. MW Ultra, Super Mario Bros.). There are some recent controllers that have that featres for the C64 available for purchase. I use a wireless dedicated gamepad that has those 3 buttons plus a fourth one for remapping the joystick up positiion.

Nice list! So many great games on the C64, I suppose you could have a number of these top 30s. I thought the Defender copy, Guardian, was awesome. Loved Boulder Dash. Great video as always OSG! I can't go past the fact you put Impossible Mission in 29th especially considering some of the games you put ahead of it. It's your list of course but I have to make my case for Impossible Mission as it truly is an exceptional game on the platform: A) there's more depth than you think. It generally has two major gameplay modes: 1) exploration/map-completion/puzzle piece collection. 2) Passcode deciphering. Working towards these goals is really rewarding, and here are a few other things that make it great: - while the room designs don't change, almost everything else in the game is randomised making it infinitely re-playable. - first class graphics, sounds, player and robot movement and animation, and gameplay mechanics It is hard, but you can beat the game repeatedly using the following strategy once you can reasonably control how often you die: 1) you need to collect 36 puzzle pieces to win the game, keep exploring the map until you collect them all 2) forget about solving the Passcode until you've got them all 3) Search each room as much as you can without dying too much (this is the key because dying takes time away from your deadline to win) 4) if a room is too hard to get to all the places to search without dying too much, use snoozes, or make a note of the room's position on the map so you can come back later with a snooze 5) Once you've finished the map, count your puzzle pieces and see how many you need to get 36 6) start going back over the rooms you marked until you get all 36, but go to the password rooms and collect more snoozes on the way (you should have noted these too, including Attombender's room) 7) Once you have all the pieces, start solving password letter puzzles - each letter in the password has four pieces that fit together. If you complete one but it doesn't give you the letter, keep changing its rotation until it clicks. Those pieces will now disappear from your inventory. 8) Once you have the password, go unlock Attombender's room for the win. Sounds complicated? Well that's what I mean, more depth than you think. Such a great game! Great vid again.

@@oldstylegaming I've been collecting the hit squad collection for c64. Got around 125 titles now also collecting the amstrad and speccy collection. Going through all my retro games for doubles found loads. You don't realise when you buy and you don't want to leave it just incase lol. I need to get loft conversion to put them all. Amiga games are too huge 😂

Mail Order Monsters should have made the list. It was ahead of its time for features. The first game to have character development/upgrades (multiple creatures for each player name) that could be saved for future games and usable for both two player or single player. Many people never explored or found this feature as it was not available on easy or intermediate level, you had to play on the difficult setting to allow saving of monsters for future matches. Edit: Wizzball should have also made the list.

Cool picks! Interesting lack of CRPGs, a genre which dominated the "AAA" game scene here in the USA. Also interesting that one (mostly) BASIC game made it into your list, but that's not TOO surprising considering how great Pirates is. CRPG development has continued in the modern era, which is a bit surprising considering the vast amount of effort they require (compared to other types of game). I mean ... the amount of effort put into something like Ultima IV Remastered or Eye of the Beholder is mind numbing, not to mention the effort required to put together an original CRPG of significant scale. I'm not into most platformers, so I'd easily slot in Ultima IV over many in your list. (Personally, I prefer the single colored tiles of the original, over the more Ultima V style pixel art of Ultima IV Remastered.)

I agree with you with rpg's as the C64 greats. Its almost impossible to compare Bard's Tale , Pool of Radiance and my personal fav Ultima 5 to any thing arcade like. You need a separate list, one I'd like to see cause lists like this let me see all the good stuff I missed
@IsaacKuo
@IsaacKuo Год назад
@@El_Guapo74 There are a ton of mostly overlooked CRPGs and proto-CRPGs. Of course, they aren't as good as the big popular ones, but they can still be interesting for what they were. The big problem with trying to compile a list of them is that they usually take some deep diving to even see if there's something special or noteworthy to them. It's often not obvious how to "get" what you're supposed to do or what the interesting challenge is.

What I appreciate about the Commodore 64 is that unlike Nintendo, Jack Tramiel pretty much let anyone make games for the C64 without having to worry about any kind of licensing fee. Commodore was a hardware company, and the availability of a huge library of games would drive sales of the C64 and give them a huge chunk of market share.

Pirates passed me by on the C64, but became my favourite NES game as a kid, so great to see it was good on the C64 too. Also, out of interest, is Mayhem In Monsterland highly regarded enough to have been considered for this list, nowadays?
@oldstylegaming
@oldstylegaming Год назад
Mayhem in Monsterland was the only game to score 100% in Zzap if im not mistaken, but for me and many others that score was way inflated, the game looks great but there is no reall wow factor in the gameplay, in fact I prefer Its Magic 2 which is very similar but still compared to the games on this list the gameplay is no where near

Well, I had a C64 growing up, and when you said the graphics are amazing for the first time in this video, I thought eh, not really. But then you got to IK+, Turrican and TLN2 and I can't deny they look, sound and play fantastic, and that reminded me: A good game is a game that you want to come back to. Any other factors only aid in making a game great. Edit: And to make it absolutely clear, there are many C64-games I love to come back to every now and again. Personal favourites include Zack McKracken, Maniac Mansion, Wintergames, TLN2, Commando, Cauldron 2, IK and IK+, Boulderdash 1-3, Spy vs Spy, Bop 'n Rumble and Rock 'n Wrestle.
