This is the most underrated gun channel on RU-vid, how you have less followers than Hickok I'll never know. God bless you gunblue490.

After watching Hickok for many years I’ve realized he doesn’t really know as much as he makes himself out to know. There’s nothing wrong with that though. Hickok does do his job well, review guns, give a little background and shoot em up.

I do like Hickok but I think many individuals would like this more. There's not enough gun channels on RU-vid with equal content. Most gun channels seem to be those that show unsafe gun practices such as exploding guns for fun and etc. Like demolition and etc. I'm just not a fan of channels that treat guns as mere toys, they are tools. Hickok has never done so, he has only treated them as tools, I was just using him for comparison of a popular channel. Tools that should be appreciated by the educated. My spelling is a little off due to using a phone. I'm a fan of Hickok, and I appreciate what he does, it's just that I'm a fan of Gunblue490 way more.

I remember reading a story about the M1 Carbine. During the Battle of the Bulge, German troops pushed through American lines and captured large amounts of American weaponry. The German troops who had hitherto been armed with their standard Kar98k bolt action rifles this had their pick of arming themselves with captured American weapons, including 1911 pistols, Garand rifles and Thompson SMGs. The #1 most popular weapon the Germans looted from captured American stores? The M1 Carbine. If battle-hardened veterans choose that weapon over the wide variety of other weapons, that really tells you something.

@@scotttyson7970 Well, the Germans were the first to field what would later be called the "assault rifle" - in the form of the MP43/StG44. It was a weapons concept that bridged the gap between a full power rifle like the Garand or K98k, and submachine guns like the Thompson and MP40. If the Germans had developed this concept sooner, and fielded the Sturmgewehr a couple of years earlier and in sufficient numbers, the efficacy of the German infantry would've been that much greater.

Imagine if the Minute Men, who used muskets could have used the .30 carbine. They would be amazed at the advent of smokeless powder, being able to put in a 15 round clip and fire that clip as fast as they could pull the trigger. They would be amazed at the small size of the carbine. Anyway, thanks for another informative video, I thought I knew a lot about my carbine, but you provided useful information I did not know. A most enjoyable forty-nine minute presentation. I owned an M-1 carbine years ago. Had it for only 2 or 3 years before selling all the rifles I owned. My dad, as a young Navy doctor serving aboard USS ONEIDA (APA-221) in the last half of the Pacific War, carried a M-1 carbine while onshore during the war. As a Pacific War historian, I'd love to buy another M-1 carbine at some point in the not-too-distant future. Thank you for this wonderful presentation. It was much appreciated. Gunblue. Nice vid. I was first introduced to this firearm when I was a kid. I worked for a ranch next to ours and they owner of that ranch was a WWII marine who packed one around the pacific. Naturally this was also what was behind the seat of his truck, etc. Later, I met a guy who collected them and has 11 I believe with at least one from each of the 10 different sources/configurations. He showed me his gun collection and I was quite impressed but his collection of M1 was quite special. He would occasionally display them at Washington Arms Collector events. Was always nice to see him educating people.

Hey brother! I discovered a factory defect all the way back to 1942 on the M1 carbine, just below the feed ramp is a 1/4 round Lug that causes miss feeds and jams, It allows the mag to drop 1/8 inch causing the bullet to jam on the bottom of that feed ramp! Please investigate this for all the vets on your next video Clayton Lockhart

My dad was a mortarman with the 29th Div. in WW2. Was issued an M1 Carbine & he loved it. He said he could knock someone down at up to 200 yards, no problem. He did say that sometimes on very cold nights he would have to keep moving the bolt handle to prevent freezing. To prevent that someone came up with the idea of mixing motor oil with gasoline & coating the action. Worked like a charm he said. Great video.

I wanted to say I absolutely want to thank you for a lot of information you’ve been sharing over the years I know this videos two years old and I’m replying. I bought an M1 carbine back in the early 90s General Motors Corp. with the serial number that was in the European theater, it is like brand spanking new I think I shot 15 rounds through that gun and stuck it in my safe, but it is such a beautiful and light carbine.I absolutely love it and I’ve seen other RU-vidrs talk about 30 caliber carbine. There’s something special about that bullet. It definitely puts energy on target hit. It’s not just a pistol round this gun at today’s standards will stand up against a lot of new, modern military rifles.

I grew up with a lot of WWII and Korean War vets. WWII vets didn’t have a lot to say about it but they were used extensively. Korean War Vets that I know didn’t like it at all, picking up M1s and rapping the carbine around a tree dislike. That being said I found it to be an accurate fun rifle to fire that used to have a place in most collections. Ammo was available everywhere, including hardware stores. Of course it was replaced in popularity by the AR but still a nice weapon
@anthonykaiser974
@anthonykaiser974 3 года назад
Korea vets probably developed a dislike due to Chinese heavy winter clothing and Korean winters rendering the carbine seemingly less deadly perhaps.

the carbine was meant as a pistol replacement for support personnel. It’s much easier to shoot accurately, and more effective than a pistol. But a Garand it is mostly certainly not.
@GeorgiaBoy1961
@GeorgiaBoy1961 3 года назад
@ Jim D. - Like you, I grew up around WWII and Korean War veterans. Heck, I'm old-enough to include a few grandfathers who were WWI veterans! An uncle on my wife's side was an Army infantryman who saw combat in Korea in 1950-1951. He said that the M-1 Carbine was extremely popular and sought-after, to such a degree that they were picked-up quickly after battles, when discarded or otherwise separated from their prior owners. Whereas there would be a lot of Garands, Grease Guns, and other weapons lying around, but not the carbine. This gentleman went on to say that it was well-liked as long as the men remembered that they were not intended as a direct replacement for the Garand service rifle, but instead to supplement or supplant the M1911 pistol or other side-arm. That's where probably a lot of the distaste for the carbine came about: Men who adopted them and expected them to be able to do the job of an M-1 rifle or BAR. The carbine was effective, but only out to 100-150 yards or so. The .30 Carbine cartridge, which is a straight-walled pistol-style cartridge, is not nearly as powerful as the 30-06, and anyone expecting it to be is bound to be disappointed. It is also germane to note that reports of the .30 Carbine not putting down North Korean and Chinese soldiers may have come about for a number of reasons. First, the cartridge itself being significantly less powerful than a full-bore rifle cartridge. Second, these 110-grain bullets were FMJ, and using jacketed ammo, shot placement is paramount for effective performance in combat. Those communist soldiers, particularly in winter, wore thick and heavily-quilted jackets, and also many wore a sort of primitive chest rig containing numerous ammo pouches for stripper clips or magazines, as the case may be. At sufficient range, these barriers may have been enough to decrease the lethality of the cartridge. Further, even enemy soldiers hit in ways which ultimately prove to be fatal, can fight on for some time after sustaining serious wounds. This is true no less of the carbine than other firearms and their cartridges. Used in the manner it was intended to be used, it seems like the carbine was well-liked by most of the men who used it during WWII and Korea, but like anything else, you'll run into people who differ for their own reasons. It was also a popular weapon for issue to indigenous troops in places like SE Asia and the Philippines, where smaller-stature soldiers found it more-controllable than larger, heavier weapons like the Garand and BAR. It also gave yeoman service behind enemy lines in Europe, arming OSS personnel and partisans and resistance fighters.

Great video! I love my Auto Ordinance M1 Carbine. Sling it over my shoulder and take it hiking in the woods with my dog frequently. Light and not bulky. And, of course, fun to shoot. Easy to rapid and even bump fire from the shoulder with your finger. More powerful than a submachine gun and lighter than an AR15. My 93 year old uncle used one in the Korean war and had a lot of fond memories of it. I recently did a video of it in the snow (rare in north Louisiana) and when he viewed it, it brought back a lot of memories for him when he served in Korea in the early 50s.

Chiappa makes one in 9mm. However it’s more of a novelty. If you want a serious pcc with some history, I’d recommend a marlin camp 9. It wouldn’t make sense to make one of these in 5.7 because you’d end up with a similar size and weight to an m4, and I’d rather have a full power 5.56 if I’m carrying something that big.

Thanks for this! I missed my best chance at getting one from CMP when they got that big shipment, I believe in 2009; they were priced at under $500. Later, I bought a commercial model, a Universal, which differs significantly, notably in that it has dual recoil springs. It shoots just fine, BUT I wanted a GI model! First of this month, Classic got in some out of Ethiopia, and I decided to GO for it, even though they were WAY more expensive. I GOT THE LAST ROCK-OLA THEY HAD! WOOT! It had 70 years of warehouse dust on it, but no corrosion or pitting, and the barrel looks perfect. I've only put fifty rounds through it, but it's a lot more accurate than I am. One of the resources I've read in the past couple of weeks said that most of the complaints about lack of penetration in Korea came from non-combat troops, who fired full-auto until they were low on ammo. The troops with more combat experience stayed with semi-auto, and didn't complain. Happy Thanksgiving! Peace be on your household.

My dad fought in the Pacific in WWII and carried an M1 Carbine (he was a Captain also carried colt45 auto as well), he said most of his guys carried the Carbine as well. He said combat was at very close ranges + they were in jungles with very steep terrain so. Most were full auto and he claimed they had guys that could modified in the field to shoot full auto. Maybe they were exchanging parts to upgrade to the selectable fire versions? he though they did so with just filing down some trigger parts?? Anyway every time I think his memory was foggy and some historian knows better, he turns out to be right after more research. Anyway, these are my favorite all time guns because a few of them kept my dad alive, and allowed me to be created so I could watch the Combat TV show as a kid on my dads lap. He had 20-10 vision and I have seen him shoot as a kid at the old acaids with 22's, after one or two shots to figure out the sights-he would not miss. We have a proud history in this Country, thanks for doing all that you do to help keep it alive.

I think I know why the idea that the M1 carbine was underpowered is. Over twenty years ago I was up at our deer camp in the catskills. It was February and very very cold, the kind of conditions that existed during the winter fighting in Korea. We were shooting targets with an M1 carbine and a repro 1875 Remington in 45 colt. After shooting both guns we were walking down range to check the targets and to my amazement we found 45 and 30 carbine bullets laying on top of the snow. Rifling marks on the projectiles but that's all. The bullets were found at different ranges but no further than 100 yards. I think the cold dense air affected the projectiles and caused such an odd situation. I still have some of the bullets. If it happened to me I'd think it could have happened in the Korean winter.

Well, that explains Hitler winning the war. The Soviets equipped their front line infantry with wimpier than the M1 Carbine sub machine guns that fired a lighter 30 caliber pistol round at a lower velocity and they have much thicker winter air. The Waffen SS just swatted those bullets out of the air with their bare hands.

Did some quick googling...apparently deer are something like 200+ lbs on average and the average human weight varies by continent between 130 lbs and 180 lbs. What is interesting is that the thing is more powerful than what's needed for varmint but a bit under powered for most deer hunting...it seems like the constraints placed on the rifle have resulted in something that is exactly what's needed for the task at hand. I find these types of tools really interesting because they're always just enough for the task at hand and the result is a decent amount of talk that the thing should be more. A good portion of workers want some excess so they can do their jobs easily in a more relaxed way, but the M1 Carbine seems to have treated that as a bar that should be only just met before focusing on other metrics, like ease of use for new workers and the logistical side of things with high numbers and a minimum of materials used. That's also why I find 5.56 and 5.7x28 to be such interesting concepts because in both cases they seemed determined to do more with less...it's almost a pity that the two rounds are invalidated by the logistical strength of the US military and the commercial strength of the US private gun market to the point that bigger is more obviously better. Carbines that shoot rounds that are just enough for the task at hand are no longer essential when the troops carrying said weapons are no longer dropping in by parachute.

I'm of the opinion that if you find an M1 .30 carbine along with many other combat rifles, with all matching parts it probably saw no combat. If you find them with miss matched parts it more than likely saw combat, or was later put together from a surplus parts box. I own an Inland Manufacturing Inc. that was produced in 1942 and then rebuilt by STD, replacing the original rear sight with the ramped rear sight that covers up the manufacture name and also had the bayonet lug mounted. I also have the Inland barrel and receiver with a Winchester trigger group. I love this rifle and will hand it down along with others to my son and grandson. I have enjoyed your videos and your expert opinion on all things firearm related and dogs lol. I'm sorry for your loss of Benny, I think all of us pet owners would agree that losing a beloved pet is very devastating no matter the breed, however never experiencing the love of an affectionate, 4 legged, best friend would also be devastating in my humble opinion. I entirely agree with your assessment of "perfect" matching government rifles. Combat rifles were all refitted with the various upgrades as the war progressed in order to give soldiers the best fighting tools. The only guns that saw no refitting had not been delivered to combatants and were mothballed. Damaged stocks were routinely replaced, having no cartouches. All fixed rear sighted guns and those lacking bayonet fixtures were rotated to the rear for refitting. No consideration was given by armorers for maintaining like-branded parts replacement when all parts were interchangeable.

Your few but notable comments on how the Second Amendment is applicable only to sworn law enforcement officers and duly sworn military personnel are vastly outweighed by your willingness to share your vast knowledge and experience to ordinary citizens. I’ve taken exception to a few of your comments regarding our Second Amendment but I thank you for sharing (slowly) some very excellent practical information on various general and specific gunsmith related subjects. I remain a dedicated fan of your channel.

You may know this but the one with no bayonet lug carries extra value. That is if it never had a lug. Any evidence of a lug being cut off would cancel the extra value. Love your videos.

I have found it totally suitable for deer and wild hogs, At least out to 100 yards, I just haven't shot game beyond that. I hear the extreme cavitator ammo changes its capability considerably, so I might try a box on the south Texas hogs. Though the standard soft points work just fine.

Does anyone else remember the beautiful sporter stocks that one of the big makers in Warsaw Missouri used to offer for M1 carbine? One in particular was a full length Manlicher style similar to what Ruger called their "international" style. Don't tell me these little carbine weren't loved to pieces by a few people in the 2 or 3 decades following WWII and Korea. It probably took the intro of the Ruger Mini 14 in the 70s to take some of the shine off the M1 carbine's appeal. In my mind that is really the only competition it ever had. 9mm carbines don't even compare.

My father's generation in ROK (Korean) army used that through 50s all the way to Post-Vietnam war era. He said M1 Carbine (they called it Ka-ra-bin) was better than M16s in lots of ways, especially in the humid jungles of Vietnam, and also -40 degrees winters of Korea.

Great Uncle carried one as a Field Artillery Battalion wire commo section chief in the Philippines. I was blessed to spend half my ARNG career in that unit. His guys risked getting shot up by Japanese snipers to make sure the Arty could talk to the front lines and shoot for them. I think he lost 1/4 of his guys. Mine is a Winchester.

Many years ago my buddie and I went hog hunting, he had a M1 I had a 7mm Mauser carbine. Long story short, I saw him shoot several times head on with a large hog to zero avail...and climb a tree...our friend finished it with a 30.06 and I did not get a shot. The moral of this story is the M1 was designed for people, not hogs. Use it as it was designed and it is a very effective weapon. This story is back when hardware stores actually carried many surplus rifles you could buy for 25/30 dollars. I always wanted a Rocola

Some 1911’s do in fact suffer from dropping the slide. I’ve seen it happen. I’ve witnessed the results myself. So if you want to do it yourself, thats great. But to inform others that its no issue, well thats a problem.

My grandad was a prison guard and shot an inmate through the ear hole with a .30 carbine at about 65 yards because that inmate was trying to stab another inmate to death. The guy that got stabbed lived, the one that got shot didn't.

I really like the 30 carbine. I have a few questions. What current magazine manufacturer do you prefer or do you think they are all about equal? Do you think there is a accuracy difference between having the bayonet lug versus not having it ? I've never heard anyone elaborate on the windage adjustment? Is it click adjustable probably 1 click 1 moa? You have two very fine examples what would you say today's value would be for those? I know probably too many questions. Thank you 👍
@GunBlue490
@GunBlue490 3 года назад
All Govt issue magazines were made to the same specs and provide the same reliability. Pro-Mag makes them to the same standard, and there may be others. Rear sight clicks are 1 MOA, that is, 1" per hundred yards. I don't believe there's a practical accuracy difference between carbines with or without bayonet lugs, as they all had to pass the military requirement of at least 4 MOA with service ammo, though most certainly can do better. One shouldn't approach military rifles made for fending off barb wire, cushioning falls on streets, and bayonet fighting with ideas of one hole groups. An MOA rifle wouldn't last five minutes in that demanding role. A carbine in good condition with an armory overhaul is currently well over $2,000, while one in excellent condition with correct parts, as issued, can bring well over $3,500, depending on maker. The US paid $47 during WWII.

@@GunBlue490 Thank you. I understand what you are saying about the accuracy of a battle rifle. I would be satisfied with 4 moa for my use. What is your opinion on the reproductions? If you were going to choose a reproduction which one would it be? 2000 for a World war II M1 carbine would be fine for me I don't have to have a perfect parts matching collector gun. Thanks 👍

I’m 70, so this is a ways back. While in high school, my late father took me deer hunting on a huge ranch in East Texas and provided me with a M1 Carbine to hunt with. He took his FN Mauser in 30-06 for his use. I sat in a tree blind with my dad’s very good friend Tom, who also had a 30-06. We had not been there long when a nice buck walked out broadside to me at about twenty five yards. I shot it through the shoulder. It was close enough I heard the bullet go “thwack”! The deer ran off straight away from me. I was stunned. Tom whistled and the deer stopped broadside to me again at about seventy five yards. Tom handed me his 30-06 and said, “Shoot him with this”. The shot bowled the deer over and I was an instant fan of the 30-06!

Birch and Beech have been used successfully for gunstocks by militaries all over Europe,and it’s cheaper !
@GunBlue490
@GunBlue490 3 года назад
That's only because they don't have American Black Walnut! Cheap is not something we give to our fighting troops. Our Ordinance Department "resorted" to cherry only as a first alternative, and lastly to birch, only when Black Walnut wasn't available, which was a rarity. Birch does not machine well, and its curly grain "pops" and pockmarks when machined, and it does not accept protective oil. Being white, birch and beech must be stained. Birch and beech are also excessively heavy, weighing much more than walnut. No other military in the world is blessed with American Black Walnut. We have all European wood species in abundance and certainly don't need to resort to such inferior, heavy wood for our stocks. America's railroad once used walnut for thousands of miles of railroad ties, which attests to its ruggedness and availability.

My buddy, Eddie was at the Chosin when he got his beloved M1Garand shot to shit from under him. He skeedaddled back to the rear to the armoror who issued him a Winchester carbine. He never let it go and brought it home with him and we still hit the back 40 with it and it shoots just as straight as it did as all those brutal battles he pushed thru with the 3rd I.D He's 96 now and still marching with our VFW rifle squad up here in Hastings Minnesota. And he swears by his carbine and never went back to an old Garand. Said he never would. Hats off to ya Eddy you old Chosin Few.

My neighbor's dad visits often. He was a Korea veteran. I asked him once about shotgun usage and he said he killed two Chinese soldiers with one blast from a pump he was using. It's hard to imagine the ferocity of that war.
