One of the best books which is sadly spoken about least out of all of Robert's masterpieces! Would really appreciate a breakdown on how the different types of warefare as outlined in the contents apply: Self-directed,, Team, Defensive, Offensive, Unconventional From studying it seems like a process of it's own where if you have not overcome your mind, created the appropriate structure, seen if the battle is worth it (defensive) then you can't move on to an actual offensive grand strategy but would appreciate a breakdown, thanks

@@bethanienaylor thanks for the advice, I am not a content creator so the best I can do is probably expand on what I have learned from studying Robert's book in this reply. Strategy is a way of thinking that is and Robert mentions this a lot even when describing power in the 48 laws These 33 strategies in each part are meant to deal with a particular problem you may face when "creating" a strategy not in the midst of a battle here are my reasons for believing this: 1. Robert mentions how the "strategic" element of war is in the planning stage - the 33 strategies highlight a way of thinking that is not easy but is a rational way to think about war and solve problems that you may face. 2. Sun Tzu said the ideal was winning without bloodshed - this was VERY hard for me to understand and come to terms with. When we read books like the 33 strategies or the 48 laws it is often when we want to fight or tackle a problem so we are already very emotional. Through that lens it misses the whole point which is to AVOID war in it's brutal direct form and instead handle situations rationally or ideally settle conflicts without it being costly. What fascinates me about the 33 strategies is that there are 5 parts covering different forms of warfare. I have come to believe that the 5 parts as outlined in the book signify different levels of war. Self-directed warfare being the first and Dirty warfare being the last/latest evolution For the breakdown I will try to keep it brief but practical: Part 1. Self-directed Warfare - This is the first level of strategy. The war with our minds is the most important as our own human nature wants us to think we don't have enemies, use what worked before, lose our cool when things get hard and to take things easy rather than act now. You must overcome it when planning to go war as if your mind is unable to see what is really going on any strategy you create will misfire. P.S. Even after a success or failure we must always go back to war with our minds, many companies/great people have had success then continued doing the same thing or given up because they did not go back to the basics. Part 2. Team (Organisational) Warfare - This is the second level of strategy. As mentioned strategy is not jumping into battle it is a way of thinking. Hence, this part highlights a strategic way of thinking about the team you lead or are a part of. Most leaders would look at how many troops they have or how much money is in the bank for their business. A wise general would look at the structure of their team which is strategic thinking. This part highlights the importance of creating a structure that allows you to respond faster than the enemy, speed is the main concern in strategy not manpower. Part 3. Defensive Warfare - This is the third level of strategy. Once you are all set for War, your mind is ready, your team is ready you have to ask if the battle is even worth fighting? This part reminds me of when Sun Tzu says: "When the enemy is weak we fight, when the enemy is strong we retreat". This level of strategic thinking is very difficult as we all have big dreams and goals but thinking of the level of the battle every fight has to be worth it. There is no point setting a big goal (offensive warfare) if our attitude towards battle is unrealistic. Key takeaway of this part is that we look deeply at what we have before we even launch a campaign or set huge goals not on what you don't have or wish you had. This is so hard and probably requires constant thought because we all wish we had an investor on board for our business or more time than we really have when we really don't. You'll know when you're being realistic because it's something you can actually implement today with little cost. We also learn to use what we have to the maximum, fight on our terms never on the enemies. If the enemy is stronger the battle is not worth it, if we are stronger we still make the war as easy as possible for us and as hard as possible for the enemy. Rome was not built in a day but 1 brick at a time over many years. This is a very difficult concept to get around as strategic thinking takes in the whole picture instead of individual battles. But, the attitude we have towards each battle must still be strategic instead of just tactical. This means thinking deeply about whether or not it's even worth it before engaging. The story of Pyrrhus who went from battle to battle without giving any thought about if each one was even worth it or what the situation was like before he even engaged highlights this well. This Part is so important, always think about whether each and every battle is worth it. So so important to use the strengths on the enemies weaknesses. We want each battle to be efficient and conclusive, never long, drawn out and bloody. Part 4. Offensive Warfare - This is the fourth level of strategy and in my opinion the hardest. Once your mind and team are set and you understand that war and battle itself is never worth it for the sake of it you must expand your mind to think of the campaign, the greater goal we are working towards. Having a clear eye on that greater goal will help all your decisions on what battles to take and avoid (Defensive warfare) as they will be based on something in the distance. BUT it is so important the goal we set is also realistic, worth it? This part is hard as we now have to consider politics around a situation, the enemy, who else our actions affect. This Part introduces grand strategy because it really is strategy on another level, you're seeing the bigger picture, things you can easily overlook before the battle even begins. It is so hard as throughout the campaign you must be careful not to lose sight of your greater goal and also to pick your battles carefully (Defensive). This part dives further into looking at the enemy and what weaknesses they may have, grand strategy chapter is the overall summary and the others are all the components to consider to become a grand strategist such as knowing your enemy and the importance of ending things well. Part 5. Dirty (Unconventional) Warfare - This is the fifth level of strategy and probably the easiest to explain yet hardest to implement. Taking everything you have considered in your campaign and before.. can we make it more indirect? If the enemy doesn't even know what you're planning because you have hidden them within a smokescreen you can't lose. It's the ultimate evolution of war where the enemy can't even see what is happening before it is too late. Hard to implement as you have to be careful becuase if you are caught using unconventional dirty strategies the enemy will respond with even dirtier strategies which will require more brainpower to defend against (if you can even see what they respond with as it's unconventional). You're messing around with each other's reality which is very dangerous. Hope this helps, this is my opinion and understanding on the Parts but I do feel it is the most underrated book by Robert because it is a new way of thinking which if you can master can bring untold power and an easier life. Take care

No disrespect no ridiculous commentary intended, that accurately describes the trilogy and specifically 33 Strategies. Here's a previously [retracted] comment I'm sharing here to liven the discussion "Do not fight the last war", leading up to 1900's and Y2K, was all about risky and un-hinged youths like infamous Bonnie and Clyde even symbolized in the 1930s Grant Wood (1891-1952) American Gothic painting 🖼 featuring the farmer holding a rake and his daughter. In places like the Middle East there's a controlled perception of reality without "mental disturbances", or psychologists, or psychological treatment, instead only Malcolm X-type Exorcists (there's a stigma in every part of the world however regarding psychology and mental health recovery) In Chapter One, "presence of mind" is utmost importance.

I read “The Art of War: Accurately Conveyed Edition” on Kindle and it is the most appropriately translated version ever. For example, it translated one of the five elements for victory "天时" into “Whether”, which is appropriate, rather than “Heaven” in other editions. The author has another book about the application in modern times.
