My Ambassador 3DS is getting some liquid damage repaired at the moment. Luckily it has survived every move I've ever done, and given the prices of 3DSes and the fact that it would seem that console has unofficially become a retro flagship it was always matter of when, not if it would be repaired. I wouldn't have any other system for running my DS family games, and it competes well with the Switch for practically all 2D retro games, ironically.
I downright begged people to play the 3DS. I think the DSi was very similar and the early 3DS games werent that revolutionary so people held off upgrading until they got the stability upgrades set for the 3DS.
The 3DS is the best handheld console is the best console I’ve seen and play before man I just love playing the games on there MAN what an era we were all in :)
To this day, if I could only have 1 system for life, it would be the (new) 3DS. Limiting to just official releases, you have NES, SNES, and GB(C), plus the DS and 3DS native games. Nothing rivals the depth of the 3DS library, and that's before modding it for emulators and game mods. My first special edition console was my Pokemon X 3DS XL, and I've since imported the Metal Slime n2DS XL and all n2DSs had unique molds and not just prints. Way more effort than needed, but it makes them special. Switch SEs haven't hit as hard for me. Also, you showing off Shovel Knight reminded me how awesome the 3D effect was in that game. Luckily I think they're bringing that back in the new remaster.
The 3DS is something special. For a system that initially was on track to fail like the Wii U, it's the only system Nintendo has ever made that truly rivals the GameCube in terms of sheer quality (besides the SNES and Switch, but what that Switch has in software it falls behind with God awful hardware, system presentation, and bad business practices. The SNES also has good games playable on the 3DS so it's counted out for the sake of ease.) I firmly believe that if it had another year and/or a better opening year it could've passed (or at least come very close to) 100M sales since units would've pushed more from the get-go (instead of having a slow start) and games like the "Ultra" Pokemon games, Captain Toad, Sushi Striker, and especially Samus Returns would've pushed it over edge since they wouldn't be overshadowed by the Switch.
I think a lot of the reason people didn’t move on is because it didn’t have a true successor. The switch had been out for a while so it wasn’t shiny enough to absorb the “it’s shutting down” sadness and it’s also a home console and not pure handheld like the 3ds. Plus with the switch being only one console there was less to talk about than the two consoles we were used to
i really enjoyed listening to you reminisce about how much simpler 3ds games were while playing Shin Megami Tensei IV on my 3ds, which is about as un-simple a game as it gets lol. I think an underrated thing about the ds and 3ds lines is that as development costs for home consoles skyrocketed, a lot of niche titles like the SMT series that previously lived on the ps1 and ps2 moved to handhelds like the DS and 3DS. I modded my 3ds recently and i've found there's a ton of hidden gems if you know where to look. It's also an excellent JRPG machine in general (seriously, you can play every mainline Dragon Quest on this thing), so it's been wonderful for me as someone looking to get more into the genre.
I still play mine! I'm currently replaying Pokémon X and Y in anticipation and preparation for Legends Z-A, and I've also been drawing a series of Princess Peach fan arts in Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone.
3:13 And because if there awful advertising making sound like the only difference between the DS and 3DS was literally just 3D. My friend wasn't interested at first because he thought that and so did others, they didn't realise it was the next handheld console. And Nintendo realised this because for the first 6 months the advertes was only about 3D (you wouldn't even know it's the next console if you just went by there advertes) then suddenly after that 6 months they are mentioning its more powerful too. They believed in 3D way too much and it was obvious it would hurt them, especially after the poor advertes.
The 3ds is my favourite handheld. There's a many good 3ds games and once it's modded there's so much you can do with it. I'd argue it's the best platform for pokemon because if you've got a modded system you can play every single generation from 1-7
I feel like MGS 3D was failed potential. In addition to the mentioned controls issue, it targeted 20fps and dropped often. If it was made exclusively for New 3DS several years later, that would have maybe resolved those issues. I used hacks on a New 3DS to get the desired outcome. A neat feature in the game is some moves from 4/PW like crouch walking.
You sure do love Super Mario 3D Land… Jokes aside, I understand that the 3DS has a library that simply goes unmatched today. Hell, I’d be on that thing right now if it weren’t broken.
Do yourself the biggest favor and learn how to emulate 3ds games on your pc. I have two monitors stacked on eachother and turned my pc into a massive 3ds (Top 3ds screen or the what the main games is usually on goes onto my bottom main monitor and the lower screen on the 3ds or stuff you only have to click on or interact with occasionally goes onto my top monitor)
the 3d absolutley helps with platformers. btw i absolutley love MC3DS, the RE3D duology, and MGS3D. i think many people should play theese games. alsoalso, the 2ds is my favorite little bread slice of all time.
I don't understand how this video only has 900 views, it deserves so many more, you have earned my sub. I think the 3ds is such a amazing console. Thanks for the amazing video! (I got my 3ds 2 years ago for $5 second hand with ultra sun)
I wish I had an original New 3DS. For some reason in 2020, I wanted the 3DS version of Minecraft, but I only had an original 2DS at the time. What was the solution? Get the New 2DS XL..! I was a stupid kid.
That 3DS is literally so odd it can do so much and it can do so much badly at the same time. It’s a weird balance to get the most. 17:33 hold up! Shader upgrades?!
Like the GPU has so many features but then the slow speed of the cpu makes it hard to use in a real game. GPU can do so much more but also the small ram also holds it back. The thing can do HD textures but cost like 20% of your Vram plus the vram need to use the texture. A friend found that it has a DSP but it’s confusing to use. It can also do gas rendering but no one used it and used a lot of resources. Funny that hyrul warriors even ran on that cpu Due to the slow cpu that gpu can’t cook in that game. When working on the hardware it’s easier to tell, I can’t remember the other 4 times that the thing impressed and struggled
Imo the 3D functionality was the *worst* part of the 3DS. It significantly increased the cost of the console, left it with a low res top screen, and meant games had to try and incorporate it somehow (which most ended up giving up on). I believe the 3DS would have been a significantly better console if they removed the 3D, increased the top screen resolution slightly, and had a better processor with more RAM. The regular 3DS had only 128mb of RAM, which was absolutely horrendous even for the time. I believe that if the 3DS did this, it would have continued what the PSP started. Almost console quality games on the go, instead of just improved DS games.
